AVGN seems to have evolved by deconstructing the whole "angry reviewer" shtick that it helped start, pointing out that it's a pretty shitty way to live.

[up]James does a lot of experiments, to his credit. The James of 2009 probably doesn't do something like the Polybius series.

[up][up][up]Also helps that in spite of having a "character", Linkara's opinions in his reviews tend to be genuine and he always reflects on them.

Anyway the follow-up apology feels so impersonal.

I always thought that NC was doing the more analytical route as others, if not in his reviews, then in his editorial videos. My favourite is the Tom & Jerry one, in which he explained perfectly why I love the cartoon so much.

Personally, I stopped watching him in 2015 when he began doing the clipless reviews. I couldn't even finish watching the first one. However, I started watching him again last year from time to time because he now makes reviews that were shorter and without skits, like his earlier work in between his larger reviews.

So I for one have not outgrown the whole "angry reviewer" shtick and I'm always happy whenever the NC and AVGN make episodes that remind of their old days.

His editorials are shit. His one on whitewashing in particular is atrocious.

Is it the old "ability matters more" bs that implies white actors are somehow always better?

Generally I preferred his more analytical stuff in his Avatar vlogs. They were always pretty great from what I remember. They also had zero skits, which is what eventually made me stop watching his actual NC videos after a while.

Jimquisition isn't a character? Good gods. grin

Also, Zero Punctuation seems to be doing pretty well despite still being an angry reviewer show.

That's because Zero Punctuation is really, really funny. (Also, when you get past the first layer of anger he's actually gotten a fair bit nicer lately I think, and is about as analytical as you can get in a five minute video).

Because, much as I loathe him, Yahtzee's style of Caustic Critic isn't the "Yelling and Screaming Overeactive Critic" popular in the mid 00s but a more downplayed, sardonic and snark filled critic who's niche was coming up with more and more creative metaphors for why the thing he's reviewing sucks or is mediocre.

Plus, Yahtzee never acted like he was playing a "character" in the same way NC was. At most, it was a slightly more comedic and exaggerated version of himself.

So yeah, that's probably why he's still doing pretty well. His brand of comedy is less an Unintentional Period Piece and just more exaggerate Commonwealthian Dry Wit.

[up][up][up] Jimquisition is obviously a character. I am after all 99% convinced he's not actually a depraved narcissistic black market cheese-munching Pog-fucking deviant who is also a Serial Killer and Cornflake homunculus.

I mean, Sterling has admitted that the character he plays up in The Jimquisition is an exaggerated goon. He's admitted than when he talked about why the framing device of the show proper changed from Jim Sterling's Intro/Outro persona from being a megalomanical narcissistic dictator to being the ringleader of a pervert's circus and industry caucus race due to how the current cultural zeitgeist made the former less funny.

He's just clever enough to keep the goon antics relegated to the intro/outro bits and not keep up the persona all the way through, which makes his comedy more playable and doesn't wear out it's welcome. Nor does any skit go on for longer than it needs to (with the exception of maybe the pog skit but that was intended)

Though, this isn't the Jim Sterling thread.

say what you want Lewis has for the most part evolved his character past caustic critic 'even made a story arc out of it' and taken feedback... Storybits are now less prominent in the reviews

Doug... has upped the skits and doubled down on what he thinks his best traits are

This is an outrage against Luminara!

Doug's editiorials... suck. They've just brought to starker light how much Doug is not a particulary insightful, observant or even very intelligent person. That he wasn't was already pretty obvious from his vlogs, which — while sometimes entertaining just for seeing someone's first impressions of a show you like — are abundant with him utterly missing the point of whatever subject he's discussing.

Compared to something like Lindsay Ellis's or Kyle Kallgren's videos, I very seldom got the impression from Doug's editorials that he's actually that interested in his subject matters — it's more a feeling that he's just jumping on whatever (he perceives as) the hot topic of the day and trying to give his hot take on it, despite frequently not having a hot take and ending by just stating the obvious.

[up][up]Key word thinks.

I’m not much for Linkara’s stories. But his reviews, now that they’ve divorced, are still very enjoyable. Mostly because it’s clear that despite his gripes, he does enjoy the medium, as one can see when he reviews something he doesn’t find horrible.

I remember the first Jimquisiton video I watched on a similar tangent, and for all his bluster in the opening and ending (God bless me!) his analysis (it was an episode showing how to convey emotions with silent protagonists and how Doom 2016 did it really well) was easy to follow and genuinely insightful. He never let the gimmick get ahead of the subject.

Doug genuinely thinks he’s got something insightful and hilarious to say about comedy and life in his skits. Maybe all comedy isn’t based on misery so much as he’s just miserable writing Nostalgia Critic and it reflects in his humor style.

[up][up] While I'm not as critical about Doug's editorials as you are, I'd agree that they often kind of lacked a definite point. Generally speaking, the more specific the subject, the better.

The best youtubers are those that evolve their style their style and content over time. Doug has remained stagnant for too long (I still enjoy his work but not as much as I used to).

For instance Jontron (yes I'm aware of the controversy please don't bring it up) started as an AVGN ripoff before coming into his own and further evolving his craft.

I've seen the doc that was going around [I could barely stomach my rage with the shit going on past Holly and Lindsay's accusations, I had barely enough time to read Lewis' because I was so enraged], and I read the first few lines of CA's so-called "apology". Yeah... fuck that bullshit. I'm sorry, I stuck with CA because their brand of humor was sorta up my alley and helped me through the more difficult times in my life, but, even if Doug, Rob, Tamara, and Malcom shape up and finally kick Michaud down Marianas Trench, I still won't be going back to them. The only producers that I will still follow that, for the life of me I can't figure why they're still on the channel, are Brad Jones and Bennet White, because from what I've heard of the former and interacted with on Twitter on the latter, are pretty nice people.
