Some people argue that it removes the complexity, and often adds Pay To Win to a game. Like, before, you bought the game, played it, got better at it. Now you just play it, buy the near-omnipresent real-money bonuses, get artificially better.

A weapons pack costs a hundred thousand credits, or $2.99. For reference, you get about ten thousand credits per Bronze game, thirty-five Silver, eighty Gold. Some people simply don't have the time or patience to grind, but they do have a couple of extra bucks to allow them to unlock this kinda thing. It's not my choice, but it's understandable.

Okay seriously though, I don't understand why so many people get all handwringy over this.

You want to play a game with paid upgrades, you don't have time to grind, you buy the updates. Guy who can't or won't buy them thinks this is stupid and unfair. Internet shitstorm.
Hear hear.

Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Some gamers just can't stand that some people just wanna buy neat extras to have fun and don't have to earn them through some self imposed challenge. Or that they have the spare cash to spend on goodies. *shrug*
Personally I wouldn't spend my money on a lot of the extra stuff since I'm really there to just play a game, but I'm not going to waste time hating on the people who do.
In TF 2, I've seen a lot of people use "free to play" as the equivalent of "noob." I don't get it. I had the game F 2 P for a year simply because I had no money. :l
As for apps that are free to begin with but allow you to upgrade with cash, I try to avoid the upgrades. There was one time I gave in (on an app about name meanings) and I felt ripped off when I got the upgrade's content (or, lack of). But, opinions and experiences vary.
