Just saw Moarf 123 try a "no punching" run - though he ended up having to do 15 - and I could totally see "min punches" becoming a speedrunning category for this game too.

[up][up]what's considered a "punch"? are we legally defining it as "something in which the Kong winds up his fist and propels his arm forward", or is it "any press of the punch button"?

[up][up] What were the 15 required punches so far? (I assume boss battles don't count?)

even if there was a way to get the key to the second sublayer without using its ability, the boss fight for that world/layer would be impossible without it as far as I can tell.

Oh the boss fight is possible without using the Bananza. I've done it. It very occasionally drops stray chunks into the arena. It sucks to do, especially on three hearts, but it is, again, doable. I think getting that one key is the only mandatory use of a Bananza form before the final boss.

I don't have much history with Donkey Kong outside of playing (poorly) the Game Boy Color country port a little bit back in the day but I had preordered this one on blind faith due to the Odyssey team's pedigree and how does Nintendo keep doing it? I'm still pretty early, just partway through the Hilltop Layer, but I'm really impressed at fun and good this game feels. DK as an Incredible Hulk-like agent of destruction is not a pairing I would've ever come up with but they really put their whole (bare ape) backsides into the concept. It feels so crunchy and fun and it's always a riot whenever I just randomly tunnel into a hillside looking for gold or fossils or whatever, go apeshit, and then pop out at some random point hundreds of yards away to see that I've left the area looking like a honeycomb or a WWI battlefield. DK's a menace in this game with them letting you wantonly destroy other NPCs' homes and personal belongings.

Only complaint is that sometimes the camera wigs out and I end up losing my bearings when I'm underground.

IIRC it was "any use of the punch button." He couldn't do the downward punches to activate the slam pads unless there was no other option, for instance

[up][up] What were the 15 required punches so far? (I assume boss battles don't count?)

IIRC, it was punches required for tutorials, and a few punches required to activate switches that the game gave no ability to skip somehow. Everything else he could find a workaround for.

[up] (x4) Huh, I'm going to have to play around with the final boss, then. Or, rather, the NDC platforming gauntlet before the boss. Because either there's a way to do it with just Kong and Elephant, or the layout changes to accommodate it.

When I said "until the final boss" I meant until the mandatory charge punch Antepiece immediately before the first K. Rool fight and was completely unsure how many Bananza uses were required afterwards because I am still playing through my own low% run.

However I have now made it to the NDC platforming gauntlet and I can confirm that the A) the layout does not in any way change to accommodate not having all Bananzas, B) most of it is technically possible without using Bananzas, even the two I do have, and C) doing so is quite difficult. I'm at NDC 700m right now and I have died so many times I am down to 9 gold, but I haven't used a Bananza yet.

Alright, I think it's time to start discussing Signature Scene contenders to add to the YMMV page, and at this point, I feel one obvious pick is going to be 64% of the reason we have to throw around all these spoiler marks currently: K. Rool literally punching Void Kong out of the story.

[up] Oh, definitely. Most discussion about the game I've seen is about that moment and what follows—I don't even know what Poppy and Grumpy Kong's boss fights are like or if there are any other boss fights!

[up][up][up] Like, no joke, I feel that's now going to lead to a reversal of why people are now coming into the game. "K. Rool is back, via punching out this weird purple gremlin ape guy into a giant freaking molten rock thing? HOW did we get here?" A pretty good incentive for them to play the game and find out, I feel, introducing them to The VoidCo Kongs in the process.

[up][up] …Ehh, to be honest, Gnawty's were pretty memeable to begin with. This just feels like an extension of their general goofiness.

I just got here myself, and I'm totally blanking how what to even do. There are no auxiliary structures to make use of and trying to chunk surf for speed before doing the usual technique only gets me halfway. What's the game plan you're using for this bit?

It is not going well, but I actually did manage to make the tiniest bit of progress. The apple that's sitting there is encased in stone and...

  • Discovery #1: If you grab the apple's stone casing you can consistently tear off one chunk of stone.

  • Discovery #2: Stone can rest on top of crumbly floors, in fact it can be thrown at crumbly floors and it won't go through them, it will bounce a bit and land further away.

  • Discovery #3: Even though Donkey Kong can't stand on crumbly floors, he can stand on a stone chunk that is resting on top of crumbly floors.

This together means you can throw a stone chunk to the midpoint of the crumbly bridge, use a chunk of apple as your tool to reach it (chunks of apple break when dropped or thrown, but they work perfectly fine for turf surfing and chunk jumping), and then jump from the stone chunk to the barrel cannon at the end of the crumbly bridge. I think a skilled enough player could genuinely make these two ridiculous jumps in a row. I haven't been able to, but fortunately I also found that...

  • Discovery #4: It's not at all consistent but if you run around the apple's stone casing tapping the grab button slowly wearing the stone down, sometimes you can pull off a chunk without shattering the whole casing. This allows you to obtain multiple chunks of stone at once (most I've gotten is four) and you can throw them onto the bridge to act as stepping stones.

Even with Discovery #4 it took me ages to successfully reach the barrel. I managed it with two chunks of stone on the bridge by perfectly nailing the sequence of "land on chunk, simultaneously jump off of chunk and grab the chunk you're jumping off of, midair turf surf for the slight boost in heigh and speed, immediate turf surf cancel, chump junk, land on next chunk, repeat" and that got me to the barrel cannon... which shot me onto the next crumbly bridge, which I fell through and died.

...Yeah it turns out the only reason the any% speedrun is able to skip Zebra without major issues is because Snake's unique movement also allows for moving across crumbly floors...

My only remaining idea is if you could maybe carry a chunk with you into the barrel cannon then drop underneath yourself as your falling, then land on it, then I guess jump off of it while picking it up, and the dropping it underneath yourself again?

[up] I think figured it out, but it's very unforgiving. Two-player mode. One of the rooftops in a previous section has grass that Pauline can sample for her vocal attack, and it's a material that's soft enough that it will stick to the bridge instead of breaking it, serving as a platform. So pelt the bridge with grass before jumping on, and you should be able to make it across the first bridge at least. I have yet to have an attempt that gets me to the second bridge, and here's where the unforgiving part kicks in: I don't know if its for this boss fight sequence specifically or just in general, but Pauline's ammo gets emptied and reset back to stone upon death. So each attempt requires you to reset the fight back to the start of the Banandium Tower section.

Doing a new playthrough, but taking more time this time, as now I don't have to worry about spoilers. Finished the Lagoon Layer, completely clearing out all the Bananas and Fossils. (At least all the Bananas available the first go round)

Fossils got annoying with the last few, but all you gotta do then is start smashing through some ground to find some treasure chests with maps.

Beat Bananza. EPD platformer good. Who knew. Really like how even though you can see Odyssey's DNA all over the place, this is very much a DK game, not a Mario reskin. Mostly just mainlined the main story with a bit of exploration when I spotted something. Certainly lots of stuff to get. No complaints about amount of content. Difficulty is really easy as expected, but there's enough challenge segments plus the novelty of the gameplay to keep it from being an issue. Last few bosses caused me a bunch of trouble though. On to 100%.

I actually liked Void as a villain, so I was a little annoyed that Rool came out of nowhere and punted Void out without him coming back at all. Ah well. Been awhile for the croc, so I'll forgive it this time. But if Smash Ultimate wasn't a thing I bet a lot of younger players would have no idea who he is. Would've liked more Diddy and Dixie. At least Pauline was nice and not annoying.
