Sidetracked By The Minigame Zone would be a bit more clear, but not every trope has to be so literal.

Pardon, mate, but this not only has 1887 inbounds, it also failed a rename one and a half years ago
.
We'll need a strong argument for a rename.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI like Sidetracked By The Minigames better. It's shorter, broader, easier to understand, and not using the title of another trope.
I didn't see how big this page was. I'm not familiar with Final Fantasy, but it seems that the Trope Namer is pretty famous.

Is "Gold Saucer" widely recognized outside people who played the original game, or at least are into that genre? I don't think so, an informal survey's gotten "everyone's played FF 7 gawd" and "what's that?" as answers, so it's probably fan myopia. And given that The Mario was renamed... do you REALLY think that "Gold Saucer" is more iconic than *Mario*?

Actually, The Mario had a lot of different problems that have nothing to do with the issues this one has. Usage did not follow a consistent definition and people would just pothole Mario even when he wasn't displaying the trope. The problem here is that the trope this is related to had its name changed, the name is opaque and that it relies on a reference to a work that is, let's see, sixteen years old now.

Agreed that the current title suffers from Fan Myopia.

None of which are good reasons for a rename. Merely factors to consider if a rename is in question. Where's the misuse? Where the under-performance? It seems like the trope is pretty healthy at the moment.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I actually figured Gold Saucer was a reference to Don Quixote. That's a classic example of Trope Namer Syndrome.
Trust me, I'm an engineer! There are 3 redirects to this page:
1 & 3 look like previous names. These names would be more optimal than the current.

"What the heck is this?" problems. It's a bad title because it doesn't tell you anything about what it is. It's also a nasty case of just trying to force a trope namer (and it's not like FF 7 doesn't already have completely opaque names... "One-Winged Angel" is too entrenched to change but it's still a TERRIBLE name other than that, for instance. It sounds like it's about angels... maybe 'dark angel's? Anyway.)

Ahem. The "Sidetracked by the..." bit does tell quite a lot.
Also, re usage numbers: While the numbers of wicks did only increase by 40% since it was last brought up, inbounds increased by about 735% since then. I don't know why they are unequal, though.
This goes back to 2008-2009. Given the time spans, I feel that while the wick growth didn't change much from start, the inbound growth definitively picked up since the last thread, which added the redirects.
Google search wise, with "" I do only get about 26 items, most of which reference us or the trope, although with the usual caveat
.
Since it has several redirects, note that a number of the inbounds may actually be for a redirect.
I do agree that naming a trope after a sixteen-year-old game is Fan Myopia and unnecessarily obtuse. Our aim is Clear Concise Witty; the current name is none of that.
So I agree that this should be renamed. We are allowed to change our mind after 1.5 years, after all.
No, they aren't. Most of the inbounds come from Reddit and they link the phenomenon as Sidetracked By The Golden Saucer.
That does not mean anything. If they found the page by way of its redirect, they still would link the page and not the redirect. We don't really have a way to tell the effects of the redirect and the main title apart unless we started to count search hits.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanExcept no problems with the trope name have been shown. No exceptional misuse and no lack of use.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I also think this trope should be renamed.
Sidetracked By The Sidequest sounds good. It's alliterative and does better at explaining the trope.
Now, this is just me, but the first thing that I think of upon hearing the name (this is without having played FFVII) is "sidetracked by gambling" since "gold saucer" sounds like slang for a roulette wheel. So I have no issue with keeping this as-is.

This has nothing to do with shallow dishes, especially not specifically gold ones. Should be "Sidetracked by the Minigames" or something similar.
