Has Image supplanted Vertigo?

It used to be that whenever I met someone who read comics without getting into superheroes, they were always a huge Vertigo fan. They got in via Sandman, Y the Last Man, Fables, Transmetropolitan, sometimes even Hellblazer.

Now...not so much? I've started keeping up with the New York Times graphic novel bestseller lists, and..it has really brought home that Image is the company that's now doing the serious, adult non-superhero comics. Walking Dead, Saga, Manhattan Projects, and Chew are taking over and Vertigo doesn't seem to have anything going right now. Get Jiro is selling well right now, as are 100 Bullets reprints, but it really seems that Vertigo has no major ongoing series of note right now.

In fact...looking at the Vertigo website, that seems to be the case, full stop. A licensed book or two, a series that's just starting, and not much else.

Is this just Warner Brothers politics messing things up? Has DC's stupendous ability to alienate talent killed Vertigo? Or is Image just putting out titles that speak to the right audience right now?

Fables is still running (as is its spin-off, Fairest), but other than that, yeah, Vertigo isn't really doing anything notable.

DC seems to have an aversion to non-superhero stuff, which is why they folded all they could into the New 52 and jetissoned the rest.

That, and Image seems to have gone back to its roots as a publisher of independent, creator-owned stuff after they saw Dark Horse and Top Cow were doing well.

[up] Which...yeah. All of their big Vertigo comics are still in print, Fables is still going, but they've folded Wildstorm already and seem to be just letting Vertigo wither.

Considering how big a deal Vertigo was for so long, I sense the ever-present hand of WB politics...

DC cancelled Hellblazer and replaced it with a series where John was 30 again, undoing everything that has happened over 300 issues in order to enforce standard superhero comic 'lol character progression FUCK THAT' lame lameness.

I think it's safe to say that they're mismanaging the Vertigo line.
