My perception is because we seem like a collection of misfits and the unlikeable, to other portions of the internet.
As said earlier in the thread, we have furries, roleplayers, and others who other internet groups would shoo out.
Our inclusive nature is not something to be ashamed of. Just because other sites dislike us, does not make their point of views suddenly valid and "right".
Even - no, especially - cast outs deserve a place to call home, am I correct?

There's no way this can't be personal, because it revolves around who I am as a person.
If you wouldn't talk about it in a large pub filled with people you don't know, it should be common sense not to start blabbing about it on a forum filled with people you don't know, unless it's in a relevant thread addressing said fetish or thing.
I mean shit, if some guy at the table next to me in a pub started ranting about how he's really a dragon in a human body and how much he loves MLP despite being a 32 year old man, of course I'd laugh and make fun of him. No reason for people to expect the internet to be any different.
I'd just assume he's had one drink too many.
On the issue of our fragmentary nature: TV Tropes, wiki and forum, is solely responsible for my hatred of Touhou. I don't care for it and at this point will likely actively sabotage any attempts to make me change my mind. The prattling on about ridiculous broken powers and characters from a stupid SHMUP of all things - I can't stand it!
And I imagine there are many Touhou fans who feel the same about my two pet fandoms: Homestuck and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. (Though I'd argue that I don't go around posting about them in unrelated threads grumble grumble sulk.)
So yeah, there's people here that we don't like. We're not Fething saints after all.
But that's a story for another time.I was sick of Homestuck before I even knew what it was thanks to this site.
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.Damn. I thought I was at least going to avoid MLP in ''this'' thread.
To be fair, it's useful

Please. You can't avoid it, even when it's irrelevant. Just like Pokemon references. You gotta catch 'em all.
See that? That's an example of stuff you shouldn't bring into an unrelated forum discussion. It messes with people who otherwise wouldn't be exposed to it. (Going back to the Fetishes/Squick topic for a sec.)
But that's a story for another time.Hey, leave my collection of Rattata porn out of it this!
...er, I mean...I can explain!
Anyway...I'm sorry about your depression. I've been going to a therapist for several months now for depression, but I've never actually been given a diagnosis of, well, anything.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle. The comment section on each Review can get nasty real fast. There's barely any moderation there unless someone raises the blue flag, and there are personal barbs and off-topic derails on the controversial reviews - something I'll admittedly done before, but something I try to at least stop when I'm hanging out there. It really shows the worst of us as a group more often than not.
On top of the old prejudices like Fetish Fuel and Troper Tales, this is something that could easily give someone the wrong idea about TV Tropes and its inhabitants.
"Anyway...I'm sorry about your depression. I've been going to a therapist for several months now for depression, but I've never actually been given a diagnosis of, well, anything. "
That's a silly thing to apologize for. I was just using an example from my life that likely wouldn't offend people. Still apparently managed to provoke a response/resonance, which just further proves the point I think.
If things get really bad you can always check yourself in to a mental health clinic. Had to do that last year when things got a little overwhelming before unnecessary drastic action could be taken. Best week I had all year, just recuperating and coming to terms with everything.
But that's a story for another time.
