On a point of land where two rivers came together sat the center of a large city. As could be expected, a good number of skyscrapers and other such large buildings dotted the landscape. Bridges spanned the rivers, linking the center with the other parts of the city that sat on the other side.

The city's architecture appeared to be all over the place. The buildings on the outskirts looked modern, but as one approached the heart of the city the structures started looking older and older. Even stranger, the oldest building in the city was also the tallest – a massive skyscraper that truly lived up to the title of “skyscraper,” but looked like it was built in the 19th century.

The people of this city came from all walks of life. Some were natives; others were just visiting. There was no denying that the population was quite a varied one. The question was just how varied....

"Okay," said James, rubbing his nose where the blunt of the force from Jim's punch hit, "first off, OW. Second, hello, I don't think we've been introduced. The name's James Glass, but my friends call me James, so by all means, call me Glass. Thirdly, I wouldn't consider me and Amanda friends, we just met, but she's right in saying that nothing happened between us, nor did I intend for anything to happen. She hugged me, but that's about it."

"Yeah, listen to the man wearing pajamas in a library," said Jen, "he's no pervert. He wasn't going to steal your girlfriend."

"One hugs everything, the other punches everything," Jen muttered, "they're starting to make the rest of our crew look normal."

"Speaking of looking normal," James added, "does anyone have or know where I can get a change of clothes in my size. Seriously, I'm not sticking around for any more jokes about my pajamas."

"They're plain blue, while I expected you to have rockets or something on them," said Jen. "Honestly, I'm disappointed in you."

[Commercial District, in a restaurant]

Andrew shuddered as he felt the residue of energy from Amu's retcon. It wasn't bad or evil in any way, but it made him feel nervous anyway, and from this distance he couldn't exactly tell what was going on, nor what direction it was coming from.

He was a slender and lean person, wearing a simple long-sleeved shirt and fresh wrappings around his hands, a pair of ratty jeans and military surplus boots. A short cloak wrapped his shoulders and had a collar that hide his chin and mouth and a large cowl that hid the top of his face. Just to complete the outfit were ridiculously huge sunglasses, just in case the hood wasn't sufficient enough to hide his face. His collar was unbuttoned to reveal a pointed, feminine chin and soft, thin lips. From the little skin that was seen, was very pale and scarred.

He sat next to a young, Asian teenager who looked quite dreamy. She wore a red-and-blue plaid jumper over a white blouse, black stockings and black running shoes. A wine-colored ribbon pulled her hair back, and she was nibbling on a piece of bacon, utterly and completely filled to the brim with food.

Across the table laden with plates filled with crumbs and small smears of what used to be syrup was a dark-skinned woman with kinky hair curled into ringlets and held back by a loose scrunchie. She wore a brown hoodie with a faded logo on it, wore a black t-shirt under it and wore ratty, loose dark blue jeans. She too was filled to the brim with things like sausage, bacon, waffles, pancakes and hashbrowns.

The person next to her was a rather handsome man with straw blond hair, dark grey eyes and glasses. He too, was a filled to the brim. He wore a white dress shirt with the top button unbuttoned and draped over his chair was a tan trench coat. Like all his companions he was completely full and starting to wonder where Cain ran off to.

Then the blond guy with glasses had a blueberry thrown at his face.

A little girl giggled, She had a makeshift little catapult constructed out of a spoon, and flicked another blueberry at the blond guy again. This time he caught it with his hand and popped it into his mouth, causing her to giggle even more.

Another woman, light skinned and wearing a colorful sweater, frowned and scolded the child, telling her she should not play with her food. The man sitting next to her, also wearing a white dress shirt, suppressed a laugh. He was big and muscular and he looked like the kind of person one wouldn't cross casually.

Andrew leaned and whispered into the Asian girl's ear. "I felt some kind of powerful working. D'you think Cain's up to something?"

The girl frowned thoughtfully, and whispered back, "He's in the library. It couldn't be him."

Andrew nodded, frowning thoughtfully. There wasn't a lot of people in the world that could use that much power casually. It was a frightening prospect, that somewhere in this city is a person as powerful (or potentially even more) as Cain himself.

[Library]

Cain, with a blank expression on his face watched as Joeseph went down stairs and shrugged to himself. He then walked over, meaning to find a place to sit, but he didn't do it very smoothly and bashed his leg and stubbed his toe at the side of a desk.

Obviously, he let out a stream of profanity, but before he could shove his sunglasses back on, they bounced off his face and clattered onto the ground.

He cursed and averted his eyes.

That was... anticlimactic. Now that we're done skewering people and setting fire to a goddamned city park, let's sit down and have a chat! Raphael removed a small case from his pocket. Opening one end, he removed what was very obviously a scalpel from the box and began to toy with it. Close inspection, however, would reveal that it was too dull to actually cut anything.

Holding the instrument at its halfway point, he let it rotate lengthwise between his thumb and index finger as he eyed the masked being, curious as to what the terrorist would do next.

The commotion behind them seemed to have quieted down somewhat - there weren't any more explosions, at least - but Tanis was still eager to get away from it all. Thankfully, the sidewalk was now in plain view, as were a number of old-looking skyscrapers. Not very impressive skyscrapers, as far as she was concerned, but given the city's apparent tech level, they were perfectly reasonable structures.

"Killing for profit, huh?" Said Tanis, looking over at Violet. "Oh, but pardon me, you also do it with 'meaning' and 'purpose'." She sneered and seemed unimpressed. "Yes, it sounds to me, Ms. Wheeler, that you are a woman of refined taste and high class, worthy of the company of precise assassins and expensive PMC's, not barbarous terrorists." She continued, quite sarcastically. "Ah well. I suppose I shouldn't bother you too much... Everyone's probably got a little bit of blood on their hands..." She peered over her glasses at Violet. "Though some of us may have attained it more directly than others..."

They soon reached the end of the park, and Tanis, for one, was relieved to be a good distance away from the maniac that had seemed to drop out of the sky before he blasted fire everywhere. "Nice barrier, by the way." She said to Emia, quite casually. "Seemed very solid. Nice job."

She looked around; the unimpressive skyscrapers were marginally nicer up close, but she didn't much care for old-Earth architecture and they were a little too short for her liking. The City Hall was also visible, and while it was nicer than the old skyscrapers ahead of them, it was more old-Earth architecture, and frankly, the windows seemed like a bit much. Her eyes found Centrepoint Tower, but she frowned at the sight more of the same architectural style. At least it was taller than the rest. Though, in all honesty, it was still a bit shorter than what she had come to expect of skyscrapers.

Than again, it occurred to her that she might just be being negative. The buildings of her home city largely shared one common architectural style, and she supposed the buildings were impressive enough from ground-level. She also spotted a bus stop, and briefly wondered what taking public transport was actually like.

"So... Omelette..." She said, a bit dryly, adjusting her sunglasses as she finished taking in the sights. "You've got an interesting sense of style..." Or no sense at all. She thought. But she wasn't about to say that, because she was trying to nice today. "Nice glasses, too..." She wasn't sure where she was going with this, but making conversation seemed like the right thing to do at the moment.

"By the way," She said, addressing the group at large. "Are any of you natives of this city? I don't know much about it, myself. I'm basically just a tourist from..." She hesitated. "Well, from far away."

Not entirely dead.

Violet looked away, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. "Well, I've never actually killed anyone. I would, though, if there was a reward for it. Generally I get money through... other means." She shrugged. "Why should I care about the lives of people I barely know? People without any purpose? Filth and scum, the lot of them, and I'm expected to care about their worthless lives?"

Violet took a shaky breath. "I'm not from this city, no. I was paid to jump through an experimental portal called a 'Gateway' and ended up here. Gateways are old, ancient technology from before the Void Wars. Because I ended up here, that means that somewhere in this city there's a return Gateway, which will bring me back to whence I came. That's how it works, supposedly."

"Alright." Adam said, "I'll tell you, Ms. Rogers. We all mysteriously ended up in an abandoned university. Even now, I have no idea how we got there. After a while, we managed to get back, but I thought it was all a weird dream. At least, until I ran into Owen again. But that's pretty much how I met Owen and Ms. Rachel."

Jackson, catching glimpse of the conversation, quirked an eyebrow. "That is odd. Hell, when you told us before, I thought you were hallucinating."

Adam shrugged. "So that's the story. Sorry for confusing you, Ms. Rogers."

Selena frowned slightly. "Hm. Must have been some kind of weirdness going on; there's no universities within walking distance where we come from. It still sounds interesting, and I'm still a little annoyed that I missed out on it...."

At that point, Rachel suddenly ran through the door with a rather worried expression on her face. "Selena! We've got to get out of here!"

Selena turned to face her. "What happened?"

"Didn't you hear those gunshots? Some moron decided to shoot Cthulhu and Nyarlathohep, and I don't want to stick around and see what happens!"

Selena raised an eyebrow. "Are you certain that your imagination hasn't gone off the rails from all that Lovecraft you were reading? I don't remember ever meeting anyone by those names."

Rachel looked exasperated. "You don't remember seeing the tall man and the short fishy man? They're downstairs and are probably angry as hell because someone just shot them. If we stay here, we risk getting caught in the crossfire!"

Selena walked over to the balcony and looked down at the first floor. It didn't take her long to see who Rachel was talking about, but from her viewpoint it didn't look like anything was going to happen - more like some sort of gathering. She turned back to Rachel.

"If shit was going to go down, something probably would have happened immediately after those gunshots," she said calmly, "But by the looks of things, the situation seems to have been defused, and nobody looks like they're going to destroy the universe or anything along those lines." She headed back to the group.

"Well, even if Cthulhu and Nyarly aren't going to do anything, the fact remains that there was a gun fired in this building," Rachel said, now sounding less nervous and more annoyed, "Don't you think that's still a good reason to get out of here before the shooter decides to come after us?"

"If said shooter was running around shooting everyone and anyone, then yes it would be," Selena replied, "But whatever it was that happened here was only a single shot, and by the looks of things no one is worse for wear and it's not going to happen again." She thought for a few moments, and then added, "How about this - if it does happen again, then we'll hightail it out. How does that sound?"

Rachel sighed. "I'm still worried, but...okay." She shook her head again, and then finally took notice of the other people on the floor. "Oh! Um...yeah. Apologies if I interrupted anything." She stuck her hands behind her back, hoping none of the others noticed them, before nodding in greeting. "I'm Rachel Pahlke."

Her eyes settled on the boy with the read hair. She tilted her head to one side curiosly, with a confused expression. "...You look awfully familiar."

"About that," Selena started, before motioning to Adam. "Adam here told me you got involved yourself in some sort of shenanigan involving an abandoned university. How come you never told me about this?"

Rachel kept thinking for a few moments, trying to remember where she had heard that name before, before it finally hit her. "Ah! Adam. Nathan's brother, correct?" She smiled a bit. "Um...wow. I wasn't expecting to run into you here. Or ever meet you again, for that matter." Then, she turned to Selena. "Um...I thought the whole thing was just a dream, and not one that was really relevant to the situation. I didn't think it was worth telling you about."

Selena just shook her head. "Some dream."

[Commercial District] - [Bus Stop]

A white haired young man looked up to the sky, smiling at the sight of blue hanging above him for the first time in a while. It almost made him miss his ironically named hometown of…of… The young man put a hand to his forehead. “Oh no, not again.” He started to pat his pinstriped waistcoat, and then his matching pants before one of his hands dove into a pocket to pull out a ratty little notebook.

He flipped it open quickly to the first page, right before quickly shutting it with a scowl that he wished he could point in his own direction. “That’s fine, who needs to remember something trivial like where you live anyway? Not me, that’s for sure, or my name isn’t…” The hand he was holding the notebook in started to tremble right before he quickly opened it back up to scan it. “Right, Vandel, I knew that.” He slammed the little book shut before he quickly stashed it back away.

With a clearing of his throat that really didn’t clearing in the first place, Vandel took a look around the commercial district to see if he could find a few memories to borrow to help keep his own in the right place.

-> [Commercial District] - [Restaurant]

He eventually happened upon a restaurant that seemed to have a lot of activity, and fortunately for him he could remember that he still needed to eat something. Vandel made his way inside, taking note of the current customers with a glance or two before he settled down at a table where he could go through his notebook again.

He looked over at the group thinking to make an approach, but a noise that managed to make it through his waistcoat reminded him that food should probably be his number one priority.

[Library ~ 1st Floor]

Nestled in another far reaching corner of the library, on the first floor, there was a small fortress of rearranged desks, lined up end-to-end, reaching all the way to the bookshelves to seal off a sizable chunk of that particular corner of the library. Each desk had at least one chair stacked on top, effectively doubling the height of the barricade, and if not deterring entirely, then at least slowing the entry of any potential invaders. The area sanctioned off by the miniature stronghold seemed to be a quiet area for relaxed reading, with a couple of large children's books in smaller bookshelves, as well as magazine racks full of just about all the things one would and wouldn't want to read about. Scattered around the floor were bean bag chairs, and there, lying on his back in a large purple beanbag chair, idly flicking the end of his tail, and flipping through an electronics magazine with a look of profound bewilderment on his lizardish face, was Joseph.

He glanced through the last few pages of the magazine, then closed it and tossed it onto a small pile next to his chair, shaking his head and bringing himself back to a state of reality. He turned his head to glance at the bookshelves that lead to the center of the room, as if something would happen due to him now paying attention. There hadn't been any gunshots after the first two, nor had there been any sounds that might indicate that something chaotic was brewing and about to boil over. Joe was beginning to wonder whether or not he had overreacted.

Rachel just glanced at Jackson's outstretched hand. "Um...you absolutely sure you want to shake?"

Selena rolled her eyes. "Rachel, they already know about your claws - you came up during the discussion multiple times. You should be fine." She then turned to Jackson herself. "If you mean 'related by blood,' then we're not related in the slightest. The claws and other oddities are due to us being Infected."

Rachel reluctantly let her hands fall before holding up one of her own hands. She hesitated for quite a while, just waiting for Jackson to flinch or something. Before she actually went through with the handshake, however, the black boy said something about a lizard man. She dropped her hand and gave him a look. "Wait a minute...lizard man? That also sounds really familiar...."

"Does the name 'Joseph Weller' ring any bells?" Selena asked, "Because if it does, he's also here in this building. I told him about you, and he seemed outright ecstatic to meet you again. Last I saw of him, he went downstairs to try and find you." She jerked her thumb towards the door. "You should probably go talk to him."

Rachel's eyes widened. "Wow...that's...." She glanced downwards, "All these people I'd thought I'd never see again and weren't even sure they existed...this is surreal." She looked up again, mentally trying to wonder if finding Joseph was more important than staying away from the shooter. It didn't take her very long to decide, and she turned to the three boys and bowed her head. "Apologies to cut this greeting short...but I think I'd like to talk to Joseph again." She then headed downstairs, stomach filled with butterflies all the while.

After she left, Selena smirked slightly, before turning to Nick and Jackson. "You two are friends? Or is your relationship more of a surrogate father thing? Given that little display, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter."

Library - 1st Floor

Upon reaching the first floor, Rachel took a look around. She caught sight of an odd array of desks and chairs, probably something built to defend from the shooter, but apart from that she didn't see anything out of the ordinary. More importantly, neither Joseph nor the shooter were anywhere around at the moment.

She cautiously and slowly started walking towards the reading area, keeping an eye out for either a lizard or a gun, and mentally readying herself to run back upstairs should she see the latter.
