EDIT 1: A more readable version of a what-if where Bulma never met Goku (about 21 chapters outlined)

EDIT 2: What-if Bulma never met Goku? (Chapters 1 through 41, going from the very beginning to the end of the 23rd World Martial Art Tournament)

So, even if Goku and Bulma never met, I almost think Goku would still have met Turtle and therefore Roshi and Krillin.

I started thinking about that - Goku meeting Roshi and getting the Nimbus - but I don't think it would happen. Goku only stumbled upon Turtle once he'd gone exploring with Bulma. Whichever direction Turtle was going he'd never wandered into Goku's path until Goku went out that particular morning to do some training.

Admittedly I'd also assumed that the giant bear thief Goku and Turtle run into would have found him. Either way I don't think Turtle would make it home, or find Goku for a very long time. He's a turtle after all, and an old one at that.

...Part of me doesn't quite think Raditz would have killed Goku just for saying no like you seem to outline.

Like. Goku attacked Raditz when they fought. To get Gohan back, sure, but.

In Raditz's words "Youth I might forgive, but idiocy has no place on a Saiyan mission" before they fight, and Raditz says he'll kill Goku.

Which, I dunno if that's true, in my book and from what I can see, a Saiyan Mission might be one of the best or only places for idiocy. Most concentrated, anyway.

But anyway, up to that point, up to Goku showing up with a slug to fight Raditz, Goku hadn't done anything that Raditz would kill him for.

Too merciful for my tastes. Raditz showed up to recruit Goku and when that failed beat up Krillin and Goku then took Gohan. Then when Goku still refused Raditz pretty much decided to kill him and Piccolo.

I think in a different situation where Goku refuses and doesn't have Gohan, Raditz's interest in him ceases. He was interested in Gohan because there was another Saiyan crawling around. He knew Goku's power level wasn't impressive but it was one of the strongest ones on the planet.

In this story Goku's not even in the top 5 anymore. I want to say he's not even at the level he was at during the tournament, although Goku gained a lot of power in three years journeying the world - regardless, Goku's so weak and so inconsequential at this point I can't see Raditz sparing him or lying to Vegeta and Nappa for him. Plus IIRC Raditz came up with the "kill 100 humans" assignment, not Vegeta.

Then when Goku still refused Raditz pretty much decided to kill him and Piccolo.

It wasn't because Goku still refused, it was because Goku decided to attack him instead of doing as he was told, even though he was vastly outmatched. And in Raditz's eyes that was Too Dumb to Live.

Like, that's the reason for killing Goju and Piccolo that Raditz literally says. On-panel. Not refusal, but stupidity.

I mean, more than that. The reason he gives for killing Kakarot is that Goku says "If you think power is everything, then you're no fighter."

Raditz thinks that statement is dumb enough to earn death.

I think in a different situation where Goku refuses and doesn't have Gohan, Raditz's interest in him ceases.

Raditz didn't even know about Gohan when he got there.

Plus IIRC Raditz came up with the "kill 100 humans" assignment, not Vegeta.

I mean, he did, but if you're doing worldbuilding or character motives you've gotta ask why.

Well you might have a point, but I'm looking at this clip here.

Raditz does decide to axe Goku after Goku decides to fight him. Not immediately when Goku attacks him, but Goku's refusal in this clip, rejection of Raditz, is what sets him off. Raditz makes this decision moments before the fight starts.

But, he also seems reticent about doing it. It's not the first thing he jumps to. He says he thought Goku smarter than this. He questions Goku and Piccolo and calls them fools, saying he's going to have to put them in their place. Still not up to "just straight up and murder them."

But then he goes "I've rethought my offer, you'd probably just slow the rest of us down." That indicates to me that Raditz really wasn't that far from just clipping Goku anyway. Goku deciding to fight rather than join him just accelerated the decision. I doubt anyone makes the decision to kill their sibling on the drop of a dime if they hadn't already been predisposed to do it.

Going back to my example, with Goku's power being so much lesser it probably isn't worth keeping Goku around. Yes Saiyans can get stronger, but that understanding didn't spare Goku in canon and it shouldn't here either.

I don't have the manga in front of me to compare panels to lines here, but, I'm still of the mind that Raditz would ultimately decide not to keep Goku around. The Saiyans were not a nice group of people.

I will add an extra conversation between them though. Raditz happens upon Goku while the latter is fishing, and Goku offers to sit down and eat with him for a bit while Raditz tells him everything, and it actually seems like a brotherly moment for a while. Things going south of course when Raditz orders 100 humans a la carte.

Now on Part 2, up to the Android Saga with a twist I... didn't anticipate.

What-if Bulma never met Goku, Part [1]

  • Bulma sneaks the ball out of Goku's house undetected and traps Oolong into helping her
  • Yamcha doesn't mess with them and enters the WMAT instead
  • Chi-Chi, Launch, Colonel Violet, and Roshi take a larger role in the early part of Dragon Ball
  • Bulma and the others go on to face the Red Ribbon Army, and win, with some help
  • King Piccolo isn't freed
  • Goku catches a really big fish - it was this big

What-if Bulma never met Goku, Part [2]

  • Raditz comes to Earth to find Goku
  • Kami becomes a more active Guardian and teams up with an unexpected ally
  • Tien still dislikes the Turtle School and acts more like an antagonist
  • The writer of this story outline gave Yajirobe a larger part then completely forgot he existed
  • Vegeta fights the Ginyu Force and still has his tail
  • Freeza comes to Earth

So, I've been betting back on the idea of Dragonball without Goku myself.

Wondering how to make it fly when in so many cases, the spectres of Raditz, Vegeta, Freeza and Buu hover over them. Without Goku, any one of these dudes would wipe Earth out.

So I started thinking of some ways to keep them off the table:

First, Maybe the Saiyan's never escape Sadal, and are ultimately wiped out before they get to Planet Plant.

Second (or maybe this should be first depending on when it happens), maybe during his initial rampage, Buu happens to kill Freeza's ancestor, preventing the latter from being born. This creates a Butterfly Effect where the Kai's manage to kill Bibidi after he seals Buu with minimal casualties, but also before he can create his clone son Babidi. That just leaves King Piccolo, who can be theoretically defeated by the humans if they get the right training (or if they can drink the Super Water).

So this means that Gohan Sr. probably meets Bulma and travels with her instead of Goku, and a lot of plot points work out very differently as well, not just for the first arc, but for all subsequent arcs up until King Piccolo. Maybe the Androids appear a little earlier but not with as much power.

My only regret to this: no Kaioken. There'd be no reason for anyone to learn it (if they even can) since there's be no Saiyan threat to justify it.

It occurs to me, what would a timeline where Zamasu became a God of Destruction or successor/candidate be like?

One of the things that's brought up is he shouldn't intervene with the mortals because that's the God of Destruction's job.

And, apparently the worst God of Destruction in all the universes is the one who almost never kills mortals. Maybe one that always kills mortals would be an improvement?

...Is he not allowed to do the job because he's a Shinjin/Core Person born from the fruit of the tree of the Planet of the Kais? And he's only allowed to be a Supreme Kai?

Because that seems racist.

Zamasu would be way too good at his job considering his ultimate Misanthrope Supreme attitude towards Mortals.

He'd just kill all of them even though that's going way too far for a God of Destruction.

Could or would Cus and/or Rumshi beat that out of him?

Depends on how strong GOD Zamasu would be. He was just a little weaker than SSJ 2 in the anime, but it was stated he still had room to grow.

I guess it depends on what the plot wants.

I mean, I sincerely doubt he could ever get to Cus's level.

I don't think even Mastered Ultra Instinct managed that.

So I kinda wondered about the EX fusions from the fusions game be incorporated into canon (well technically not canon since this is a fanfic but...)

Mayhe Bulma gets curious about fusions and makes the metamoran rings

They probably just go screwing around with the fusions I guess

On the topic of Dragon Ball Fusions, the game, the fact that Gine is a Moveset Clone of Pan, and has Healing Shout, and has an EX Fusion with Towa of all characters is weird to me.

...Anyway.

Another new chapter of the adventures of monkey momma, only this time, with actual monkeys!

Or, well, Great Apes.

Oozaru, I'm talking about Oozaru.

Also, Gine finally gets that rebound sex, and it's with Bulma's parents.

Not mine, and. Brilliant, Blinding might be my new absolute favorite Bardock story/interpretation.

I actually do like the idea of Bardock as a Saiyan with "Calm Judgment" like in Toriyama interviews/Minus, but. The thing is, that doesn't necessarily mean nice.

So, the idea of Bardock as basically a Saiyan sociopath, who doesn't quite care and saves people because it's rational and logical and smart is maybe my favorite thing.

Goodness through intelligence.

I read an Ox-King fan fic, which was good. (well, I'm reading through it, so far!)

Anyone here had a go - I've been looking through this for inspiration, so far only on Chapter 1.

I'll admit, I did once think of an Ox-King fic with him as the central character, although it was very Alternate Universe Fic and never got beyond one page. He nearly did get a different personality simply due to it being an Alternate Universe.

Then again, it's a Dead Fic so I might just give it a reboot anyway.

Anyone here tried writing about Ox-King? (when I did watch the show years ago on Cartoon Network, only just got back into it, I used to like him!)

I don't think there are any good DB fics despite the huge number of them. My reasoning is because the lack of versitality, all the characters do is fight with their fists legs and ki blasts, whatcha gonna read a combact scene like this "X kicked Y but Y spinned and reverse kicked, X punched, punch punch kick blast punch, power up, punch punch kick..." boooring. The fact that in DBZ and further on(which I don't acknowledge it exists) power levels are insanse and wildly fluctuating making it inconsistent and a bunch of characters useless. Crossovers are pointless with DB as it trumps any other fandom in power, maybe it's okay with DC but still it's the same boring punch punch kick if you bring Goku,Vegita,Gohan to that universe. I've read one where Bardock got strong and prevented Saiyans from being destroyed by transporting them to Earth, it was almost okay but it fell flat. Another one where Frieza was slowly turning good, it was okay but not that interesting. And I heard about SI where the MC becomes Yamcha and realizes how fucked he is so he starts actually training, couldn't find it though but it sounds interesting. Anyway prove my first statement wrong.
