After creating an obligatory page, I realized just how obscure the book is. Even google search does little!

Anyway, if you can, get your hands on this wonderful modern fantasy!

If you have read it (a miracle), feel free to add tropes to the page.

Wrote a description and added some tropes to (hopefully) spark your interest.

Elevator pitch it.

You're standing in an elevator with me; you've got until I reach my floor to sum up & pitch this book to me.

What's it about? Why do you like it? 'wonderful modern fantasy' is far too vague.

It's like Secret of NIMH in book form, only without all the science, plus far more epic on its scale.

Best I could think up in 30 seconds.

...and the Secret of NIMH is?

Epic scale, modern fantasy, not sciencey. That's what I've got so far. Possibly involving animals.

He's the Doctor. He could be anywhere in time and space.

The one by Mr. Bluth is based on science, with magic introduced because reasons.

Satyrday is pure fantasy with no science whatsoever. But it has that dark (almost grim) atmosphere that is very similar.

A better description would be: Shadow of the Colossus meets Secret of Neemh.

And what if you assume we don't know what Abby of those things are?

Can you pitch it without referencing another work?

What are the strengths and why did you like your favourite parts?

I still don't have any idea of what this is beyond the genre.

Put it another way: What exactly is the story here?

I've read it, a long time ago. I recall that there's a plot by a sorcerous owl to plunge the world into eternal night and that the title Satyr winds up opposed to him. Don't remember many details. All-in-all it was pretty good.

[up][up]In a fantasy world, a menacing owl commands his army of ravens to steal the moon (humanized and given a feminine gender) from the sky. This starts a storm, after which the sky gets enveloped with thick impenetrable clouds, and the plantlife starts slowly waning away. A human boy (presumably, the only one of his kind), and his best friend, very old (but magic, so not aged) satyr get contacted by one raven opposing the owl, and the two embark on a journey to save the moon and stop the world from basically dying (without her sister, the sun is losing power day by day). Better Than It Sounds, and deeper than you think. Expect unexpected plot twists, and FEELS.

You had me at humanoid moon kidnapping. [lol]

Seriously, though, you've convinced me to put it on my to-read(-eventually) list.

[up]Well, personalized celestial bodies go way back. And you start taking ridiculous things like that seriously after the following conversation: Raven: "What can I do for you?" Moon: "Let me die."

Anyway, if you decide to read it, I have bad news for you: you must buy it, for it is nowhere online.

Okay, I just finished the thing, and want to add some more tropes.

The problem is, I don't know their names.

When a story does not have a central/main character, how do you people call it?

After a quick search, I came across Ensemble Cast. Is that what you're looking for?

If not, you can always ask at the Lost and Found if you believe it's really a trope but don't know the name for it.

And if it turns out there's no trope for it, but you think there should be, feel free to pitch it to YKTTW.

So, if I typed the entire book to be read online, would any of you read it, based solely on the description on the entry's page?

Okay, I started to manually type the chapters and am currently putting them up online, since one person elsewhere asked me to. If anyone here wants to read the thing, I will provide a link to Satyrday: a Fable.

The book has seven large chapters. How many of you want to read chapter 1, right now? It is now online.

Be aware that you're blatantly infringing on copyright in doing this. Especially if you post it publicly. I'm not a lawyer, but I'm entirely comfortable in telling you this: stop, you are potentially opening yourself up to a lawsuit.

[up]The thing is, I am dealing with a book that was out-of-print for over 30 years. You can only find a few used copies online. No one owns it anymore. No one cares. The author didn't bother reprinting it.

Now very few people know about the book's existence. If I don't share it, the great story which is Satyrday will be lost forever.

The only person who could care at this point will be Steven Bauer himself. In the prologue (that I put before chapter 1) I wrote clearly that, if he contacts me, and expresses displease, I will delete what I copied so far.

So, having explained what my intention is (to preserve great literature), here is the first part of chapter one of this 1980 out-of-print novel.

imadinosaur is right. Posting it online is illegal, even if the book is out of print. Copyright lasts for 70 years after the death of the author. Even if - God forbid - the author died tomorrow, the copyright wouldn't expire until 2084.

And it's not that hard to find copies of it. There are around 60 or 70 copies available on Amazon. The new ones are a bit pricey, but the used ones are dirt cheap. (There are several copies that are $4 with shipping.)

I've got an Amazon gift card with a bit left on it. I'll pick up a copy and see if I notice any tropes that I can add to the work's page.
