Back from Elio! I liked it buuut… I dunno, I feel like the emotional impact is impeded by the fact Pixar’s formula has become… predictable. The story is well told, it works, but I can see the threads and the tracks. I wish they would innovate a bit more visually at least, which they did brilliantly in Turning Red a few years ago.
I did like the "antagonist" just trying to juggle between his murderous overlod career and being a good dad for his non-murderous son. Though it is a bit disturbing that his apparently numerous victims are never, you know, mentioned. Then again, the Communiverse looks more like a chill hangout than an actual authority.
Also disturbing is both clones being treated as disposable by the heroes even though they are clearly sentient.
PS: It’s funny that this is released just after the Lilo & Stitch remake, because the first half of the movie gave me strong L&S vibes — Elio especially feels a lot like a male Lilo at times, though a bit older.

I don't know what you're referring to, I didn't like Ducktales 17 so I haven't seen the whole series and can't figure out the connection between that and Elio.

Well, Expendable Clone is a trope that has been around for a while.
Inside Out turns 10 today!

Frankly, we'd prefer the spanking machine.Ngl, Elio feels like the type of film that will be significantly more universally praised in 20 years than it is now.
Free the hostages in the Troubled Teen IndustrySaw Elio, was a nice movie even if far from the high ceiling Pixar has set for its movies. (and I had a Happy Meal toy for it since last year, though one year after the Delayed Release Tie-In McDonald's is going for it again
) In the box office thread
people say it's being underpromoted and maybe it's the case, my screening had a nice crowd of maybe 20, but the theater had big ticket lines that were possibly for Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon, people wanting to see a cartoon being retold rather than a new one!
I just got out of seeing Elio myself and it had a pretty decent crowd for a mid-afternoon showing on a Thursday.
And yeah, it's not the most groundbreaking Pixar movie but it was still really great IMO. Just a nice feel-good movie with some kickass animation (and kickass alien designs) and an emotional core I personally really identified with (Elio definitely feels autistic-coded). Definitely one of Pixar's best movies this decade IMO.

"Hey, least I didn't lose all my artistic talent when I crash landed in the arena here."
You mean 28 Years Later? Uh... not a lot of overlap between demographics there.
Plus, 28 Weeks Later has been getting rave reviews so far, so I wouldn't be calling it a cash grab.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, those are some of the best animated films of their respective decades.
