But are we keeping the "self-assigned" part of the definition? Because the new name doesn't imply that, so it's just going to keep getting misused in that way.

I think words like moniker and alias suggest it's not a birth name, which would help a bit, considering if you get a new name that isn't what your parents gave you, it's far more likely you took it yourself, or at the very least, accepted it. It is what you call yourself.

Whenever I think of "Fail O'Suckyname", I always think of this one Baccano character named Jacuzzi Splot. It's not Complaining About Characters You Dont Like because as far as I can tell most people like him (he's one of the most morally upright characters in the series), but his name is ridiculous by consensus. I mean, just try saying it out loud a few times. It is the opposite of Awesome McCoolname, and I feel like it would be an in justice to not have an opposite trope for it to cover the Jacuzzi Splots of the world.

Honestly, I think Awesome McCoolname suffers from exactly the same as this one: Names someone, somewhere, once thought sounded cool. It's essentially a Sugar Wiki page.

Yep. It should probably be either in-universe or Just for Fun.

[up] I'd support that. It's definitely a trope when it gets acknowledged in-universe. Just for Fun would be ideal for real life examples. There are some priceless examples on the page that deserve to be listed and I'd be sorry to see them go, but there are too many now to be relevant for the main page (its sub-page).

We should also change the laconic description to say something along the liens of "someone picks a name only they think is good or someone picked the lousy name themselves'' also a name change to incorporate "nickname" "alias" or "non de plume" into the title would help curb the confusion.

I would definitively restrict this to In Universe Examples Only.

Should/Can we discuss Awesome Mccoolname? They are closely related, but I don't know whether TRS rules allow that.

My ideas based on this thread are following:

  1. Merge Unfortunate Name and Fail O Sucky Name for names that are somehow viewed sucky in-universe when either characters themselves don't like their name or somebody else ridicules the name and so on.

  2. Come up with a new name for a trope that is currently Fail O Sucky Name — somebody changes their name to a sucky one on purpose. This is in-universe by default. Suggested titles were Mocked Moniker and Atrocious Alias. They're good as it's clear that they are not birth names. However, is it clear enough that they were chosen by the people themselves? I think moniker can be also a nickname given by somebody else. "Alias" seems to be more appropriate. At least in my native language, the word "alias" has connotations for being chosen by the person who identifies with it. (I would have to check a definition in a reliable English dictionary to tell if it's the case in English also.)

  3. Make Awesome McCoolname in-universe and list only examples from media. But I would allow to have Just for Fun page for real life. The examples gathered there are too funny to just delete it, but it kind of steers away from this wiki's mission.

"somebody changes their name to a sucky one on purpose"

I think that's some unfortunate wording. It implies it's sucky on purpose.

[up] What are you saying? That's the point of the trope, no? That a character willingly changes their name to a shitty one or chooses a shitty alias. Forgive me if some English language nuances escape me.

Duck is saying that the phrasing makes it sound like the person is trying to make the name sucky. I thought the same thing.

Which isn't usually the case, they just didn't think it was sucky until later on.

I'm for Mocked Monicker since it seems fairly straightforward.

We could also put in the description that it falls under the umbrella of Failed Attempt at Drama or is similar to Impossibly Tacky Clothes in that in-universe there was an attempt to be cool that fell flat on its face.

Also I realize now that I had misused the trope myself so I agree with the rename.

Mocked Moniker seems to have pretty solid backing.

I think the bigger question at this point is criteria for qualifying, whether it has to be mocked in-universe or what.

And then there's the question with that to do with the name Fail O Suckyname. No one has really responded (that I saw, at least) to my suggestion that it be turned into a redirect to Unfortunate Name.

[up] I'd be for turning Fail O Suckyname into an Unfortunate Name redirect. I think part of the confusion is that the O'Suckyname part (at least to me) implies family name rather than a self-chosen moniker.

It has to be mocked in-universe. Otherwise it's an Audience Reaction.

Has that never been mocked in-story? If not, it's really an Unfortunate Name.

Whizzer's name has been mocked in story so it still counts. From the description on the page:

Crown Description:

How should we fix the trope and related pages? Fail O Suckyname is often mixed with Unfortunate Name. Fail O Suckyname is supposed to be a subtrope of Unfortunate Name that only applies to a superhero's chosen name, or if a character willingly chooses an ugly name.
