They were always there, and never left. It's kind of hilarious when there's the occasional mass outing of people on a thread who were women presenting as men. Or people who are claiming to be women who were presenting as men. One recent /a/ singalong was definitely half women.
And then everyone goes right back to pretending everyone's a guy. I love it.

This is a misconception brought about by ignorance of how production cycles work in the anime industry. The petition did nothing to influence why Free! came about.
Not months, years. A year to two years is pretty quick, and some cases four and up is actually expected.

Don't feel stupid, there is no way that petition had any effect on the decision to make Free!. Like a few of us said earlier, it takes several months at the very least to make an anime; for Free! to go from a promotional CM to a full-fledged project in a matter of weeks is just not possible.
What they said.

Original anime productions - may be longer? While shorter production times for manga-based or novel-based anime?
I'd prefer it very much that the official script-storyboards for Titans anime was finalized before mid-2012.

Eh, I was being overly generous. Long story short, it takes a lot of time to make an anime.
People keep saying that, but it's not like Kyo Ani have never done fanservicey type things before. Their shows just don't revolve around it (and despite having swimming be a major component, I doubt Free! will either).
I have just learned that my god, Mamoru Miyano, is going to have a role in this. Excellent.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFmGNqji4u0The CM is pure fanservice while the PV is almost entirely slice of life stuff.
I do personally think what was in the CV is higher level of fanservice than we've seen Kyo Ani do previously, but that's neither here nor there.
But hey thanks to this drama there's some interesting articles about KyoAni around
. No wonder they want to be content creators now, that nets them much more of a return on their time, and with their track record they can pull off a consistent return even with the greater risk.
Incidentally this means I doubt they'll want to do more Key Visual Arts adaptations. Which is a shame but, they're not the only studio who can pull off decent Visual Novel adaptations. It's just that Deen aren't even a poor man's substitute.

It's not a show about shirtless young attractive boys. It's a show about swimming that just so happens to have shirtless young attractive boys in it.
Of course there will be fanservice; it's unavoidable when your sport requires you to be half-naked. I just meant that there will be more to the show than that specific aspect (like friendship, rivalry, the spirit of competition, whatever.)
The themes of the anime: friendship swimming AND UPPER BODY
Especially the UPPER BODY Don’t forget THE UPPER BODY The director wouldn't stop talking about how important their upper body and chests are. Also, they have different staff just for water. Water will be very important. Character development will be very important as well.
Edit: ANOTHER NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR- Upper bodies are filled with dreams. Don’t forget to stare at their chests and shoulders!
Um, while I feel pretty comfortable on my heterosexuality... not so much on this guy's. Unless it's actually a woman.

The director is a woman
. Here, have a quote from her concerning the hotsprings episode of Hyouka:
The key animator for that episode even called her a 'back fetishist'
.

But surely the UPPER BODY is vital for swimming!
EDIT: ...there are probably worse pagetoppers out there. Somewhere. I'm sure.
