Well, if Free! has decent amount of swimming-edutainment, it may do better than Tamako market (which I assumed didn't live up to the promise of mochi-edutainment?).
(There is a market for edutainment, okay? Like that's why we have Discovery Channel, Nat Geo, History Channel, Bio, etc. This edutainment-fag wants to pandered to, goddamit!"
Btw, how's the music-edutainment in Kon? Last time I tried, I managed to the episode wherein they had sleep-over in the mansion of one of the Kon girls whose family is loaded.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.![]()
Frankly, Tamako Market and K-On aren't edutainment. They have nice bits of trivia, that's about it.
An additional point about Tamako Market: it's fresh in my mind as the recent Kyo Ani series that actually had noticeable bumps in the execution (Episode 10 I think?). TM also had some interesting ideas but overall the cozy, slow pace smothered everything else to the point of being dull.
And I wouldn't expect much edutainment for Free! either, because a) based on previous Kyo Ani shows and b) there's not a whole lot to learn about swimming, unless you really want to get into the kinetics and such.

There's different swimming techniques, and edutainment doesn't have to be about (just) the mechanics of swimming itself.
Edutainment can be about what it takes to be a pro-swimmer, to reach the stage wherein you can quit your day job. It can be about the world of professional swimming. The competition, the levels and ranks, the market dedicated to it.
I guess I was hoping it would be like Silver Spoon or Chihayafuru or Hikaru No Go. There's enough about farming and the games to get people (in real life) interested in them, not just in the characters/shipping or plot.
Another example is Bakuman, but since manga is already popular in popular media, unlike farming (or those (mental) games), the boost Bakuman gave to the art of making manga isn't noticeable though it did enlighten many on how hard it is to make a manga.

Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.I'm kind of interested in seeing how this'll turn out, since Kyo Ani has always made a point of avoiding Fanservice, but fanservice is approximately 83% of the reason people are interested in it
But mostly I'm annoyed at it's existence, because the more things Kyo Ani has lined up, the less likely it is they'll get around to making Kyoukai no Kanata
I am still peeved at the fact that Kyo Ani did not animate Little Busters.

That's a valid point I'd say. I'm no more annoyed with this than I was with say, Hyouka for not being Haruhi. People are always unhappy about what Kyo Anu aren't making anyway.
It's also not quite a reversal of their apparent stance on fanservice given that they did make cute girls and super-moe which is a kind of fanservice but this is certainly the most overt fanservice I've seen from them.
Key Visual Arts and Kyoto Animation seem to have drifted in quite different directions. I want to know who's going to animate Rewrite, I suppose it (the second half at least) isn't really Kyo Ani's thing.
They've already officially announced that they're animating Kyoukai no Kanata, so I don't see any reason to worry about that. From what I can tell it's one of the bigger LN titles their fledging LN division publishes, so the motivation for them to make a quality adaptation is pretty high.
This isn't a situation like Haruhi, which despite being a legit Cash-Cow Franchise looks like it might well be left out in the cold by Kyoani's philisophical shift towards working on their own properties. Well, at least until Kadokawa is willing to hand it off to a different studio.
Kyo Ani has always been kind of distractable, though. I mean, this show is based on on a commercial that aired a month ago
No, the project has been around much longer than that. If they seriously only started after the commercial, it would have been just an OVA or else it would be a sloppy, crappy mess.

Follow me on tumblr!Based on this and how long it takes to make an anime, then the project has probably been in the works for over a year at least. Incidentally, Kyoukai no Kanata also won an honorable mention that year. It may be coming out sooner than we expect. /crosses fingers for fall release

The production cycle of an anime takes anywhere from a year to upwards to two and more (Gurren Lagann had at least four years in between the first draft to the TV airing for example). It's likely that the proof of concept based on the original book has been around since at least 2011.

Yeah, I recall the directors of Psycho Pass mentioning that from the initial idea to the airing of the first episode, the development process was around 4 years. I would assume that it takes longer to create an original anime than an adaptation.

Based on Kyo Ani's track record and the fact that it's a summer anime, I would say we're most likely looking at 12 episodes.

Ironically, the use of "Free!" rather than the novel title "High Speed!" might have some unintended consequences. You see, in Manga Time Kirara MAX (those familiar with Kirara will automatically figure out its a schoolgirl series), there's also a 4koma
◊ (that just had its first volume released recently) also named "Free!". And all of a sudden it was placed on "permanent hiatus".
Here's a translated post from GAN (the author)'s blog. Coincidence?
Today I have something to tell you. Uhm, I already said something in Kirara Max so there might be people who already now but...
The serialization of the 4koma manga "Free!" will be suspended for a while.
I'm sorry for all the people who had fun reading it every month... I'm really sorry.
We are currently in an "unavoidable" situation so I can't tell any details about it yet, I'm sorry. Until then we'll eventually provide an explanation.
However, it has nothing to do with my physical or emotional health (even though my back is pretty bad), neither did I lose motivation or ideas for jokes nor anything like that.
Also I don't have any plans to end "Free!" at this stage.
So, I'm very sorry for causing any problem but I'd be very grateful if you could wait for a while.

Does anyone know the source for:
The themes of the anime: friendship swimming AND UPPER BODY
Especially the UPPER BODY Don’t forget THE UPPER BODY The director wouldn't stop talking about how important their upper body and chests are. Also, they have different staff just for water. Water will be very important. Character development will be very important as well.
Edit: ANOTHER NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR- Upper bodies are filled with dreams. Don’t forget to stare at their chests and shoulders!
Odds for swimming edutainment going down.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.

I dropped after 2 so...
