It's not the fact that this is a contest that's an issue; it's the fact that the entry is displayed on a public website. I forget where I saw the statement saying this, but generally publishers will consider posting a given work publicly on the internet as it having been published, meaning that if they want unpublished materials, they won't consider such a work.

Yes, but I want to cover all bases.
The problem is that the freetexthost.com says nothing about publication rights (figures). However, it seems to be set up so no one can Google the stories and find them that way. You have to share the URL in order to access it, so it might not count as "published".
But really, I think in the end, it depends on what the publishing house's definition of first publishing rights are. :/
Whew, that's the second set of results up! ^_^
(... And yes, I again covered my own result with my hand and read all of the others first before going back to look at it. ^^; )
Nocturna, as I believe that I said to Finger Puppet, thank you very much for putting in the time and effort to judge, and for providing the criticism that you did; it's very much appreciated, and your thoughts made for interesting and informative reading. ^_^
Only one more set to go!
... Once we know who's going to be judging it. ^^;
I suppose that the thing to do is to submit the piece, but make note of it having been uploaded to Free Text Host, the URL restriction imposed by that, and its entrance into this competition; each editor to whom you submit it can then decide how they want to treat the situation.

My Games and Asset PacksWell, I just checked Khantalas' posting history, and (s)he hasn't been on since the end of May. So I'm starting the process of finding a different judge. I have a few tropers in mind to ask.
EDIT: Okay, that's one down, as he hasn't been on for even longer than Khantalas.

Looks like heroes really do always arrive late, eh?
Contestants, good luck

"And you must be Jonathan Joestar!" - SueI'm kind of curious which story you wrote now since I don't think I could guess which one of these were written in four hours.
Also I think if I ever judge one of these again I should probably be less lenient with the "overall" points because I'm feeling like that lady on American Idol who likes everything.
I'll let you guess which one is mine; it's the one written right after having read The Great Gatsby for the first time.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I've been thinking about the previously-mentioned possibility of attempting to get our entries published: perhaps we should hold off on posting the links to works if the author wants to attempt publication. That way they're at the least not posted on a public forum, and a magazine may still be interested.
Thoughts, anyone?
Take your time. ^_^
I'm not all that interested in publishing. To tell you the truth, I only entered this contest because I had nothing better to do and I needed to test out my writing skills and see if I need to refine them in some way. I gotten some good feedback and even constructive criticism in an area I really should be improving on. In short, my story was written for this contest, not for publication. If I were to publish it, I will heavily refine it to match the criticism I received.
Well, frankly, if TV Tropes sells our works for profit on Kindle or something, I would not mind, as long as the entries are kept anonymous. I wouldn't want to become actually good in the future and have this as an Old Shame.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Hmm... All right, on second thought, perhaps it's better that I not attempt to publish my entry: it might be a good idea to have something up online that I can point people to as an example of previous work, and it does feel a little unfair to attempt to keep my entry hidden from everyone else here, given the public nature of the competition.
My Games and Asset Packs

I got a couple
of answers
on the first publication rights issue.
I'll probably look into a little more, but it looks like our first publication rights are safe.
