  • Name: Lyn Zheng
  • Warlord: Shi Huangdi
  • Wisp: A transparent ball with a little flame burning in the center.
  • Age: 15
  • Appearance: Wow, what an old book...
  • Magical Girl Appearance: And done
  • History: Ever since she first started school back in China, Lyn was a gifted child at the top of the pile. Her grades excelled, she was athletic, and everyone saw her as dependable and a leader. So it goes without saying that she felt invincible, like she was on top of the world. Then the wisp came out of nowhere, just smacked her in the face. It wasn't too big of a deal at first, but then the memories became more vivid and powerful with each passing night. Then there was the whole transformation thing. Her grades began a steady decline and her parents freaked out when they saw this. Within a week and a half, they had shipped her off to the floating school in North America, hoping that a school with more experience could help her out better.

    • Offensive: Ruthless Conquest— +1 for the turn after defeating an enemy.

My participation is on the 'unlikely' column but I may look to making a character anyway, in case I decide that this game is light enough on the commitment end to actually participate in for me. I'll be making Fleet Admiral Halsey, after I figure out the full list of modifications you've made to my rules since the last game tongue

That being said we're still lacking in any armor commanders, I could retool Rommel from the first game, or use Patton or Israel Tal...

Either way I'll be bringing some Big Guns that are oh-so-desperately needed. We're super-heavy on melee characters, when you guys need to remember that most mooks use Small Arms so would beat you in the weapon triangle. Y'all are gonna get slaughtered out there without artillery support.

Possibly interested, but I'm curious about the combat-roleplaying balance: will this game be primarily combat, or will there be extensive roleplaying as well?

First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.

[up]In the last iteration, there was pure roleplaying sections between combat matches, and there's nothing barring you from roleplaying WHILE you fight- as long as you made your actions clear at the beginning of the post (and then could go on to make the post with those actions as IC)

Utility magic ability is iffy. Consider revising to "After Voirrey attacks, she may immediately move half of her full move in any direction".

  • Name: Erica M. Farragut
  • Warlord: Admiral David Farragut
  • Wisp: A glowing blue oval with beady black eyes.
  • Age: 15
  • Appearance: Text you later!
  • Magical Girl Appearance: Far left.
  • History: Born and raised in Middle-of-Nowhere, USA, Erica did not let her uneventful location prevent her from having fun. She was a very active child and delighted in exploring and going places she probably wasn't supposed to be. As she got older she had trouble keeping her mouth shut, and was very competitive in just about everything, be it sports, video games, or even academics. That last one never turned out well as Erica struggled to remain even a C student. No stranger to crashing into things, Erica was surprised one day when she was the one getting crashed into by a Wisp. After that things changed, starting with memories of Civil War engagements. Not that she immediately realized they were Civil War engagements, history wasn't her strong point. But one thing that stuck in her mind was a strong voice shouting, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!"
    • She eventually figured out she had gotten the spirit of Admiral David Farragut, naval hero of the Civil War. Naturally Erika was ecstatic to discover she could transform and had other magical abilities. Her parents, while happy for their child, were also concerned about what she would get herself into and jumped at the opportunity to send her to the school off of California.
  • Attribute': Water.
  • Movement: 5 (8 on water)
  • Weapon Type: Lone Range
  • Abilities:
    • Offensive: Pirate Hunter: Erica gains +1 Attack when attacking from Beaches.
    • Defensive: West Gulf Blockade: -1 to enemy attack when adjacent to two or more allies.
    • Utility: Full Speed Ahead: Erica ignores Swamp penalties.

  • Name: Prita Maurya
  • Warlord: Ashoka
  • Wisp: This.
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: [1]
  • Magical Girl Appearance: This, only younger. (Apparently, it's harder to find pictures of young Indian Buddhist nuns than I thought.)
  • History: The ruthless (if driven) Indian-American queen bee of her high school, Prita originally saw her life leading to the Ivy League, law school, the corporate world, and marriage to a multi-millionaire, no matter who she needed to trample on to get there. When she first had her encounter with a wisp, the possibility of gaining powers (and power) opened up even more horizons...until she realized she had contacted the memories of Ashoka, the 1st century military commander whose revulsion at his conquests led him to embrace a life of Buddhism, peace, and ensuring the welfare of his neediest citizens. Why didn't she get a cool glamorous general like the other girls? Why does she keep having flashbacks of helping lepers, the poor, and other icky people? Why do her powers have to be so wimpy? And the less said about her magical girl costume, the better.
  • Attribute: Earth
  • Movement: Not sure how to calculate this
  • Weapon type: Throwing lance (small arms)
  • Abilities:
    • Offensive: Right Action. Provides a +1 bonus to an attack on an enemy two hexes away. This enemy must be attacking another magical girl, and cannot be attacking or have previously attacked Prita.
    • Defensive: Right Intention. Provides a -1 penalty to any attacks on a designated magical girl on a hex adjoining Prita, as long as Prita takes no offensive action that turn.
    • Utility: Right Effort. Prita can give up her own lifeforce to heal the lifeforce of any other individual in the battle.

Prita Maurya:

Concerning your Defense and Utility abilities. The former has to apply to yourself, not allies. The later must rely on equivalent exchange: 2 HP lost by Prita will be 2 HP gained by her ally.

Equivalent exchange is fine, I can change that. In terms of the defense, though, I would highly prefer it to apply to my allies rather than myself. (It goes with the theme of the Buddhist superpowers I am trying to uphold — denial of self. It would, of course, mean I have no special defensive abilities, which is ok with me.) Is there a way I can make this work?

Throwing my two cents in- it still may be workable. As far as 'no defensive abilities' you're going to run into some trouble with that, you'll have to take another by level 6 and a third by 9. You can look through the signups and related threads of the previous game (Linked to in the 'examples of abilities' in the OP) for some more ideas for healer abilities; there were a couple medic NPCs, and a character with a health-sharing ability like yours.

Haley 'Belle' Williams

  • Warlord: Fleet Admiral William 'Bull' Halsey, Jr.
    • Ability inspiration pulled from CV-6 USS Enterprise and BB-62 USS New Jersey, two of Halsey's flagships.
  • Wisp: Appears to be a ball of roiling stormcloud. Occasionally sparks of miniature lightning will dance around and through it. Called simply 'Storm', when named at all.

Physical:

  • Age:17
  • Appearance: A girl of average stature with blue eyes and long blonde hair, Haley does not like to ornament her school uniform in any way, instead subtracting from it. She doesn't wear the usual tie, nor does she wear any extraneous decorations. Besides a hair clasp when appropriate, the most significant piece of jewelry Haley wears is a bracelet around her right wrist. A golden chain hooks to eyelets on the wingtips of a US Naval Aviator badge. On the smooth back of the badge is an inscription that reads "The World Wonders".
  • Magical Girl Appearance: The most notable change Haley goes through is the acquisition of a large jetpack-like device on her back. Two jet engines and a six foot/two meter wingspan allow Haley limited, low-altitude flight over water, though the most distinctive feature of the hardware is that, instead of mounting rockets or bombs on underwing pylons, she instead has one large cannon slung underneath each wing. The wings themselves do not seem essential to provide lift, and the whole wing can elevate or depress to bring the guns to bear on any target. The jetpack is mounted to thick armor plates that wrap around her torso and meet in the front with Naval Aviator wings on the center of her chest. On her head sits a smaller and more streamlined flight helmet, with a tinted visor slanted down and forward covering her eyes. The rest of her uniform is unchanged.

Personality:

Haley is a girl who always looks to the wild, the risky, the dangerous, and wonders how she can own it completely and utterly. When exposed to the consequences of Halsey's similar demeanor, this outlook was not curbed, but she did get an appreciation that some thought should be put into actions ahead of time. Life to her then became a series of calculated risks and prospects. What are the chances she could pull this off? Was the reward worth it? What was the opportunity cost? Haley loves a good challenge and throws herself into them headlong, as she always had, but in the more serious cases thought is generally required first- advice she occasionally still fails to heed. What remains true, to her, is than inaction is a grave sin. Life is dynamic, and whether acting or reacting, staying in motion is key.

A holdover from her life before the Admiral, she does enjoy Society, and while trying to keep up she no longer holds herself to standards of formality, she doesn't go through the motions as much as she once did. While social position was a challenge she tackled as much as any other before- giving her the nickname which still follows her around, as she was an up-and-coming 'southern belle'- it is the one field in her life she has become much more relaxed and casual about, while the rest of the world's struggles have come into sharper focus. When asked, she may say she just doesn't see the point anymore. She's far more flirtatious than she used to be (and does not discriminate between genders at that), the loosening of societal restrictions regarding courtship conduct perhaps being the first to go. She is also a bit less reserved in her speech thanks to Halsey's influence, prone to the occasional sharp outburst or explanation, something the tries to control but not stomp out; she thinks said outbursts are rather amusing.

In moments of quiet, she is given into introspection on her past life. The bracelet around her wrist is a constant reminder to her that sometimes things don't always go according to plan, and when that happens the consequences can be dire. In those situations she needs to simply do the best she can, and attempt to avoid them in the future. Foresight is a skill she only has intermittently, something she needs to constantly remind herself of before the lack thereof gets the best of her again.

History:

Haley's nickname came from before her time at the Academy or with her Wisp; always a prim and proper girl in social situations, her life was defined in terms of what would be socially acceptable, and just how far she could push those boundaries. It lead to a sort of double life; in society she was upright and proud, in casual situations she always pushed the limits and took big risks in a freespirited, funloving, totally carefree way. Her parents were split in the same fashion, a casual, relaxed father married to a socialite mother, and they always wondered which way their eccentric daughter would finally break. One way of life would supplant the other, and it was only a matter of time to find out which would happen.

Instead, Haley got bonked on the head by a wisp, and had to deal with the memories of a commander who was always brash and bold, taking daring risks. She now experienced how those risks have consequences, and in these cases those consequences had attached body counts. She experienced how those risks can pay off with great rewards, how sometimes even big gambles can be pulled off exactly as planned. At the same time she was shown one does not have to adhere rigidly to some notion of formality, or hide behind the pretenses of society, to be taken seriously. She ended up somewhere in the middle, subdued from either extreme. She slowly began to see the high-class life as unnecessarily rigid, balking at the semi-scripted interactions that it entailed. She began to see that sometimes you have to think before you act, and while risks are still definitely worth taking, it's important to chose your battles both metaphorically and literally. In the end, the Wisp attack had a great positive effect; it allowed her to stabilize her life between the two poles, instead of driving herself to one extreme or the other. Still adapting to this new viewpoint, half adopting and half rebelling against the new personality within her mind, she shipped out for the academy, to be with others of her kind.

Combat

  • Attribute: Water
  • Movement: 5/8
  • Weapon Type: Long Range (16"/50 guns (In practice more like two 20mm autocannons, since we're magical girls and not battleships))
  • Ability Progression:
    • 1 - Offensive: The Black Dragon/Big J +1 to attacks against improved tiles
    • 2 - Defensive: The Grey Ghost/Big E Attacks with the potential to KO Haley receive -1*
    • 3 - Utility: Naval Aviator Haley does not incur movement penalties from terrain.

So I only just now realized Halsey was the one to arrange Yamamoto's death.

Sorry, zzzdragon >.>

EDIT: Actually learning the two characters are much further intertwined than I originally thought. Hope you don't think I meant to counterpick you. My initial research focused a lot on Halsey himself but not really on his relations with allies or enemies...

I do look forward to the excellent breadth of interaction we can get between the two though!

^^ I don't mind at all, I was excited when you mentioned the idea at first, to be honest (though part of me would have preferred a Rommel reboot for Super-Axis-Best-Friends-Forever). Akane won't have any hard feelings. Yamamoto was kinda like the Rommel of Imperial Japan; he distrusted the Nazi Regime, and vocally opposed the Tripartite Pact, the Occupation of China, and going to war with the US.

yeah Yamamoto being 'Admiral Rommel' was sort of the conclusion I came to after I read up on him. That reasonable 'For country rather than cause' guy who the Allies ended up really respecting by the end, but unfortunately didn't survive the conflict.
