Discuss TV Tropes itself, such as observations you've made about the site/forum/wiki.
NOTE: Keep it civil; try not to get into any Flame Bait-y territory, per the forum rules
(in particular, drama importation and popcorn posting are not allowed, and this thread is for discussion about the site and not the users). In addition, while discussing the Edit Banned thread is not prohibited on its own, discussing and/or alluding to specific ban/suspension cases is not permitted.
One thing I've noticed is that for all how the page for They Might Be Giants claims them to be the unofficial official band of this wiki, there's relatively few people on this site who seem to ever reference them.

i think it helps we are well beyond the natter and edit war stage when everyone threw The Scrappy or Unintentionally Unsympathetic at whatever character they hated. i will admit, i still have a grudge against Channel Awesome for several movies being flooded with negativity because haha sarcastic glasses man says it dumb n stupid.
say, does anyone remember that proposal by some tropers back in '14 to make a fork or similar website that included serious analysis from scholars?
i may be dead inside but at least i have Mystery :,)Yeah, the examples aren't as nitpicky and angry anymore. Most examples are pretty well explained about what the flaws are and how people feel. Even the ones we take to cleanup tend to fail more due to people simply overestimating how other fans feel or because they were talking about intentional character flaws.

They might even go into the opposite and defend the character and make a skewed Fan Myopia version of what is actually the majority opinion. Which is fascinating as well.
Well, that happens more with Unintentionally Sympathetic. But yeah even that can be an earnest mistake from someone with passion. But we're breaking out of the nitpicky "reviewer said this" phase of YMMV.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallWhile there was a big influence from YouTube reviewers, the site was never really copying them. One of the biggest gripes I saw was in adaptations not being faithful to their source, and none of the Channel Awesome reviewers ever focused on that. Their main influence was on small, obscure properties that nobody would know of they hadn't been reviewed, you still see their opinion being repeated verbatim on those work pages. The big sources of complaining are on big but geeky things like Star Trek: Voyager, The Last Airbender, various TTRPGs and any number of bad games, and those are home-grown.
I don't remember a "scholarly" fork being suggested, but I do recall that during the second Google incident, several forks were made, and while most were looser with rules and aiming to preserve what was cut here, "Beyond The Lampshade" was made with the aim of being stricter: it was hoped that they could trope pedophilic works by letting articles be opinionated and clearly condemning them. They were also aiming to get rid of Japanese trope names (I vaguely recall that tsundere became "She Blows Hot And Cold" and Moe became "Tooth-achingly Cute"). It wasn't a true fork, they were rewriting each article and I think they never got beyond a dozen. It was mainly a forum for those who thought cleanup here was too lax.
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.Just found this while trying to find the TLP Wishlist thread.

Well, if they want to research TLP launches, they should make sure they don’t fall victim to the glitch where launched drafts say they’re nuked. I’ve had to post TLP draft links in numerous descriptions thanks to that.
I was cleaning up misuse for Bottle Episode and noticed it has three literature examples. Holy moley...
Observation: Theme Tune and its subtropes have a shit-ton of video examples.
(I should know -- I uploaded the Zorro (1957) one)

Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallSorry to double post, but I noticed something else interesting.
"Random Trope" doesn't generate YMMV or Trivia items, at least as far as I know.
Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI know it's not mandatory, but anyone miss when nearly everyone posting on the forums had a non-empty Troper page? Feels like I click on someone's username and they've got nothing on them.
INT is knowing a tomato is a fruit. WIS is knowing it doesn't belong in a fruit salad. CHA is convincing people that it does.![]()
Nothing has changed in that regard, those who want to do so fill their page. Most do.

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupIt's occurred to me that there are some older tropes that are given names based on more obscure works that don't fall into Trope Namer Syndrome. Like, Macross Missile Massacre could easily be called "Missile Massacre" and very little would change.
Wenn sie die Ente hierein lassen, lasse ich das Wasser hieraus! No, in that instance, IT IS indeed the trope namer. Because if it wasnt, it would just be "Missiles Exist" which is People Sit On Chairs. The trope isnt just ANY missile attack, but rather a VISUAL SHORTHAND animators use to make missiles look cool. The real trope namer would be Ichiro Itano with his "Itano Circus" which he used extensively across his career and many would imitate him. But "Itano Circus" is meaningless to anyone not in the know about Japanese animation, hence Macross Missile Massacre.
Not every old trope's name is just obscure pandering, some are surprisingly well thought out for the era.
As long as this flower is in my heart. My Strength will flow without end.My biggest ongoing project is the Spheraverse, particularly the Characters/ pages for that 'verse. I just realised that perhaps categorising by alignment instead of by work may be better so I gotta rearrange some stuff, but not today, I've done plenty for the main elemental boi lol. (And I only made Sandbox.Characters Bo Boi Boy at first to clean up grammar and context in 2021 lol)
I may only launch these by at least (and likely later than) 2025 when the Papa Pipi movie and series become official. Maybe I should make a short term projects thread.

When you're alone I'm reaching out to let you know that you're far from strangers, like the saviorMy favorite part of Trope Report is the joke sponsor at the bottom of the issue. We always have a blast coming up with them. Do people like those?
ETA: Huh, apparently it was War Jay 77 who came up with the idea
, inspired by Neopets, of all things. Today I learned.

I kind of find things like The Scrappy and Unintentionally Unsympathetic fascinating, in the way that I love analyzing what works and doesn't work in fiction and breaking down exactly how a story fails with certain characters just... I find it genuinely interesting lol
So yeah I've never been against the negative tropes and negative YMMV stuff on this site so long as people keep themselves in check when making examples. Obviously things aren't perfect but sometimes breaking down a story's flaws is healthy and good for learning what not to do.
