Discuss TV Tropes itself, such as observations you've made about the site/forum/wiki.
NOTE: Keep it civil; try not to get into any Flame Bait-y territory, per the forum rules
(in particular, drama importation and popcorn posting are not allowed, and this thread is for discussion about the site and not the users). In addition, while discussing the Edit Banned thread is not prohibited on its own, discussing and/or alluding to specific ban/suspension cases is not permitted.
One thing I've noticed is that for all how the page for They Might Be Giants claims them to be the unofficial official band of this wiki, there's relatively few people on this site who seem to ever reference them.

I guess that's true
Maybe that's why this site is becoming way more LGBT+ friendly nowadays. Or it's just that the assholes eventually got filtered out.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallA ton of people who are on the autism spectrum too, as I’ve learned from discussions about it on this site. (I am one of them.)

I think it's a combination of both. The assholes are being filtered out due to "Don't be a dick" being Rule 0 and the site is more welcoming as a result.
This is coming from someone who fit the "young male nerd in his early 20s" majority in 2010, for what it's worth, though I have noticed that the site is more diverse these days and think that's a good thing. (Though for me specifically, the difference in 2022 is that I'm in my early 30s and not early 20s.)

Does that mean “Don’t be a dick” rules weren’t as enforced in the early days?
I can't provide any insight on how moderation was done back then, and not just because I wasn't part of the team until last year. I didn't become active on the forums (or really anything other than the wiki) until 2017, and I mostly edited infrequently until 2015, when I became more of a regular.

I got a rock for Halloween.Overall, it seems that early TV Tropes was less regulated than it is today, both wiki-side and forum-side.
SING TO ME, LEND ME THE SONG OF BLASPHEMYThat rule always existed but I guess people were given more to hang themselves back then but people still got suspended for excessive rudeness.

I joined TVT in 2009 and became an active troper 2011.I was 12-14 so I spent half of my life on this site
I initially felt weird about being younger than a lot of people back then but more people around my age demographic were joining the site as the years go by
TRS alone was way too lenient in the early days. What counted as a good opening post back then would be rejected immediately today, and likewise, these days gauging consensus requires more than just a handful of people to agree on something.
Edit: I'm saying this because I dug through the Repair Shop Morgue a few years ago out of boredom. I didn't participate in any of those threads.

Yeah, I used to be semi-active with TRS back then because all that was needed was a simple explanation, troper consensus, and that was it. Once wick checks became a mandatory requirement (and I dread manually having to check hundreds of wicks across multiple pages for proof), I stopped participating in TRS altogether. Ah... The good ol' days of simplicity. How I miss that. I wouldn't mind wick checks being the rule if the process itself wasn't so tedious.

You rarely have to check 100 pages though. We do the square root of the total number of wicks or 50 wicks—whichever is higher. Most tropes have a square root that's less than 50.
I have been doing wick checks for years even when they weren't required for TRS so maybe that's why they are easy to me. Although back then, I didn't copy-paste context to my wicks. All I do for wick checks now is copy the wick list, throw it in a randomizer, and try to check at least 5-10 wicks a days so that I'll be done in a week.
I always found it interesting how it seemed that that TLP was a community hub pre 2010 before the forums came along. Maybe that's why it looks so old.

Macron's notesI find wick checks fun tbh, they can be tedious but I do enjoy getting to dig into obscure pages and find out how tropes are being used. There's a reason I've done so many of them.
Old TRS fascinates me a little since a lot of the decisions just don't make sense to me, or weren't properly enacted, leaving a lot of oddities behind (like the Foe Yay situation).
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper Wallwick checks are an excellent way to use TV Tropes as a Gateway Drug.
Some mods don't mod actively right now despite being around here and there. She didn't officially step down (and only admins can remove mod status anyways) but I don't think she's interested in modding actively last I read
Macron's notesWasn't the only mod to officially retire Nombre? (I mean there's Eddie but he was the admin so it's different)
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallYeah, Nombre was the only mod who had their mod powers taken away by request. Took the admins a while to do that though I think.
Macron's notesI think most places have inactive/virtually retired mods, at least in my experience. Makes me wonder if I'll ever disappear without a word though.
Macron's notes
I'm not a mod but I sometimes wonder if I'll end up disappearing without a word myself.
On a related note I wonder what happened to Shimaspawn. Was thinking of mods that vanished and that name came to mind. Haven't seen crazysamaritan around much either lately.
Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI can understand why a lot of mods just end up dipping, it's stressful especially on a site this massive. I'm genuinely impressed Fighteer has been around for as long as he has with all the shit that has happened over the years.

Speaking of demographics, I think we do have a fair amount of LGBTQ+ representation today, considering ATT topics in 2021-2022.
