Discuss TV Tropes itself, such as observations you've made about the site/forum/wiki.
NOTE: Keep it civil; try not to get into any Flame Bait-y territory, per the forum rules
(in particular, drama importation and popcorn posting are not allowed, and this thread is for discussion about the site and not the users). In addition, while discussing the Edit Banned thread is not prohibited on its own, discussing and/or alluding to specific ban/suspension cases is not permitted.
One thing I've noticed is that for all how the page for They Might Be Giants claims them to be the unofficial official band of this wiki, there's relatively few people on this site who seem to ever reference them.

Minoru Shiraishi also had that for a long time. And I believe Daisuke Ono too for a while.
It's better than the early days where there seems to have been a lot of botting with crowners (likely why the Nakama rename one was defeated three to one, when a later one won seven to one).
I've just noticed two things about our software. When you edit your forum posts, it indicates the date of the latest edit, but it is twelve hours earlier than the time used for post themselves, giving the odd impression that someone changed their post before they actually posted.
The second is that when you enter a troper's name in the forum post search, it gives you a page of posts with a generic URL; if you go into a post and go back, you have to refresh or resubmit the name. But if you go into any other page of their posting history, even if you go to the first page (by clicking it, not going back), it remains a it becomes a URL with their name in it that is preserved when go back to it.
The quirks of this website are strange.
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years. Why do we have three separate YMMV headers and what even sets them up to be different if they're at the same index?
Edited by Amonimus on May 13th 2022 at 12:54:22 PM
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI think that depends on your time zone.
I think the first YMMV header is for Fridge pages, as they're meant to always have their own page even if there's only one example, so you wouldn't technically put them on YMMV.
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)Okay, I've figured it out. The confusion was due to some being listed at both YMMV and Audience Reaction. Actually I think I'll bring that up as well but elsewhere.
e: Did that

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupWhile at it, I've found WMG.Poison Oak Epileptic Trees. For a page (even has 210 wicks) it's quite unique.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupWhy is the Troper Map thread still stickied? I thought people were smarter when it comes to circumventing themselves getting doxed.
Guys how cool would it be if Super Megaforce had a green ranger...It's a relic of an older time. It's still there because no one asked for it to be in-stickied and we don't pay as much attention to Yack Fest. I wouldn't unpinning it if that's what others want.
EDIT: It's un-stickied now.

Macron's notesNow that I've checked that, to me it looks almost as bad as some NSFW threads that got locked. It also got exponentially less active over a decade. Feel free to argue there if there's fun in giving your exact location on Google Maps along with username and Holler mods for an opinion.

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI don't even say what town I live in. Not safe IMO. I usually just say "downstate NY".
Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI think I'm on the troper map, but eh, I don't feel like it narrows me down too much.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallWhat's the purpose of a troper map anyway, besides basic demographics? Figuring out the best location for Troper Con TM?
(I know you can bond with people in similar locations but you could make a forum in covens for that anyway, plus I don't really come here to socialize with people in a non-media context.)

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Yeah... Maybe such meetups could have been good actually, but we're not a major corporation like Wikimedia who can easily set those up and control them every year and the users seem a little too spread out for such an event to bring more than a few people. And honestly, saying more than the country you live in (and potentially the state if you live in the US) is a little too much IMO.

I just realized you can remove the "pmwiki/pmwiki.php/" part of the URL to link to a wiki page! https://tvtropes.org/Main/Trope
for example.
Yeah, seen that already, but it can make linking to the wiki elsewhere look less cumbersome.

Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)The only reason why cleaning up moments images
at Image Pickin' got its own pinned thread was because individual threads stagnated for about a week before closing unceremoniously.
However, there are two other types of individual threads that are just as common that would've likely received their own pinned thread by now if it weren't for the fact that they don't stagnate, since replacement suggestions are way easier to find: one is replacing screenshots in work pages for official art, and the other is replacing character images in creator pages for a shot of the creator themselves.
I've noticed that the longer and older a trope's description is, the more likely it is to be a confused, meandering mess. I assume this is just the result of too many cooks in the kitchen.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallThe original Troper Updates was started by Fast Eddie as "Kinda like Twitter with more than 140 characters, but less than a blog or LJ." It was easily the single longest single thread on the forums and was incredibly busy as it was the closest thing we had to a general hangout thread for the longest time. It would expand by multiple pages daily.
At one point Fast Eddie declared his intention to "Shut this shit down." Which caused a brief panic among the users before Eddie revealed he was just messing with us.
A couple of years later it became too big for the site, which prompted Eddie to announce he really was going to nuke the thread this time. Then he did so, but opened up Troper Updates II, again as "Kinda like Twitter with more than 140 characters, but less than a blog or LJ," at the same time, so nothing really changed.
Then when the
emoji became a thing, someone decided to have fun with it by using it like 50 times in a single post and then copying that post over dozen times in Troper Updates.
It crashed your web browser just opening the page.
Naturally a lot of people were very mad and confused. The mods or Eddie tried to fix it by deleting those posts entirely, a process called Skullfucking at the time. I assume this seemed like the more practical solution at the time as opposed to going through each post and thumping them individually.
That was the day we found out the hard way that Skullfucking was bad.
Or rather, using it too much on a thread completely screwed with how that thread worked. After all those posted were deleted the page and post numbers were just nonsense digits. Make a new post and you'd be hurled back to somewhere in the middle of the thread. The post you made ended up somewhere else entirely, but not at the end of the thread anymore, if there even was one at that point.
Eddie spent a good while trying to fix it. Meanwhile, we started Troper Updates II, Part II to continue our activities. If you go back to the first page you can see folks still commenting on the situation. Eventually Eddie declared the old thread a lost cause and just locked it, and it was finally lost in one of the regular forum sweeps. So Troper Updates II, Part II became the new permanent thread by default.
So there's a bit of Tvtropes history for ya. Hope you young 'uns enjoyed. Remember the moral of the story: Don't spam
or you'll skullfuck a thread to death.

For the longest time, Yūko Gotō's image used to be from her animated appearance in the Lucky Star anime. I changed it recently through IP but I do wonder why someone chose that pic over anything showing what she looks like IRL.
