More to the point, Weiss's style is like figure-skating. We've not seen it too much in the main show — even when Monty was animating the fight scenes. The best example was still the White Trailer.

At some point between the events of this flashback and the events of the White Trailer, Weiss decided to start wearing a side-tail. She's not strong enough to defend what she wants here, but she is in the White Trailer — just, as Volume 4 shows. So the point where she crosses over is probably the point where she switched her pony tail.

[up] You're not the only one, I checked out the pages and form what I can tell involves a swordsman and some sort of vampire, a woman with Light powers and a Robot Girl. And that its a Spiritual Successor to Melty Blood (which is to Tsukihime what Arena is to Persona)

Under Night is...a mish mash of Anime tropes

Honestly tho, I'd say play the game. The latest version is coming out this week, and gonna be localized this Fall with a story mode. Because even I can't tell you.

I still adore that imagery.

Under Night

The only other time I've seen it was in that One Minute Melee between Asuna and that rapier-wielding chick.

characters look better

I think the Volume 4 short was the same, the models were a little more detailed, the choreography seemed different, more captivating.

The background in this short look a hell lot better, but I don't imagine that it's going to retain that picturesqueness once the actual season starts.

Honestly I didn't really care for the dance-y style of fighting. It just looks silly to me. If they wanted to make Weiss a straight-up Dance Battler where she used constant flowing motion on both attack and defense, then that'd be one thing. But her normal style is fencing — sharp, precise motion for quick, decisive strikes. The two don't mesh well at all, and what you end up with instead is her usual style, but with extra stupid poses added. You're stabbing hellbeasts in the face, Weiss, not performing ballet.

Of course, I don't particularly care for the fencing style, either. It basically requires each exchange to be decisive, which straight up doesn't work work with anything larger or tougher than your basic mooks. This is why Weiss usually ends up playing support (freezing things with ice, throwing people around with glyphs) for big fights instead of going on the attack directly. You'd kind of expect someone as hypercompetent as Weiss is trying to be to have a better plan for soloing boss-tier grimm than that.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

The fight wasn't life or death besides she was probably trying to impress her sister.

Also, this is Weiss before she was trained and strong enough to go to Beacon. The way she looked at everything, she seemed inexperienced. And what would you expect from the heiress who is basically a princess?

She's trying to be showy and flamboyant uneccesarily because that's probably what she thinks she should fight like because of "grace" and "elegance" that fits her station.

i think the main thing missing from the fights these days isn't specifically about their styles and whether or not it fits their personality/weapon, but the footwork. no one really gets low with a steady base before throwing an attack, which is a subtle thing that Monty always kept in mind.

If they wanted to make Weiss a straight-up Dance Battler where she used constant flowing motion on both attack and defense, then that'd be one thing. But her normal style is fencing — sharp, precise motion for quick, decisive strikes.

We were introduced to the dance-fighting style first, since that's what she does in the White Trailer, where she's very obviously moving like a figure-skater for most of the fight.

Monty seems to drop that for most of Weiss's fights in the main show except for weird moments such as Episode 8 where Yang says they need to hit the Giant Nevermore with everything they've got (Weiss does some silly dance-poser moves to activate the glyphs and sending the flying laser ice attack thing at the creature).

Don't get me wrong, I think the dance poses are silly as well, but this character short is very much what Monty himself was doing with Weiss in both the White Trailer and the main show. We actually lost the dance poses after Monty's death, but clearly someone's decided to bring that back here.

It makes sense given that this character short is based on events that occur before the events of the White Trailer occur. Since she uses these kinds of dance moves in the White Trailer and Volumes 1-2, it makes sense for events even further back in her past to use them, too. If anything the toning down of this in Volume 3 could be viewed as maturation of battle technique (unless the short signals a return to the dance style from the beginning of the show, of course, which may well be the case).

Also let be honest and blunt here: this is a series with showy fights and is what draw many into the show, Yang is brawler who try to rock, Ruby is fast and imperative, Blake is stealthy and ninja-like and Weiss is quite like dancer.

One of my hopes for when Volume 6 rolls around: If it's coming out around the same time as Cross Tag Battle, there of the episodes have guest openings styled to look like Blaz Blue (Daisuke doing the music) Persona (Lotus Juice and Shouji Meguro) and UNIEL (I don't know who composes UNIEL, but it has a distinct style).

I imagine Weiss' would look quite a bit like Yukiko's. Blake's would absolutely be a giant demon bull with a cat in its mouth. Yang's would probably be related to Raven in some fashion but I'm currently having trouble coming up with appropriate imagery other than the fact that a child Yang (or something to represent her) would be included somewhere.

I imagine Ruby would be like Narukami Yuu and not have a Shadow. At least for now.

Does anyone think the RWBY Monsters And Enemies page has lost the plot in terms of identity. So much has been squashed on that page, it's starting to look like a mess.

Currently, it's got:

  • Cinder & her Vale team (Cinder, Mercury, Emerald, Roman & Neo)
  • Salem & associates (Salem, Watts, Tyrian, Hazel, Professor Lionheart)
  • The White Fang (every one ever, including the stolen paladins)
  • The Club (Junior, the twins, generic mobsters)
  • Schnee Dust Company (Jacques, Whitley, the Knight, SDC Security)
  • Creatures of Grimm (every single one that's ever cropped up — that's sixteen and counting)
  • Others (non-show, e.g., manga or video game: Merlot, Cephalopod, mutants, possession Grimm)

What about we split this page into relevant themes, one theme per page:

  • Theme 1: Salem & lackeys: Watts, Tyrian, Hazel, Cinder, Mercury, Emerald, Roman, Neo)
  • Theme 2: The White Fang
  • Theme 3: The Grimm
  • Theme 4: Antagonists (not easily categorised: SDC, Junior's club, Professor Lionheart) note
  • Theme 5: Franchise villains/antagonists that don't appear in the main show (manga, games, etc.)
  • Theme 6: Technology (SDC security, the Knight, Paladins) note

As an aside, why do the kids have their weapons separated out from them? It seems solely because the weapons have names because weapons are not separated out for huntsmen characters whose weapon names haven't been revealed. The weapons aren't characters, it creates messy pages, and results in either tropes getting repeated on the same page (once in character section, once in weapon section), or the same example getting covered by multiple tropes instead of just one or two, solely to get the example in both the weapon and character sections (again, on the same page).
