[up][up] Good point Saiga. tongue

[up]To be fair our currency has been pretty sucky to the US dollar recently. Still a loss though.

It was was more annoying when our dollar was like 1.10 US and we were still paying 1.79~ for a 99 cent song.

Hard to say. We haven't seen much of any regular animals in the whole show. Only animals I can recall are like Zwei, that one horse what Amber rode on, mandatory scared-off birds and fish. Note that that is just an observation, not really a complain.

So, we have some early full songs (for people who preordered RWBY Vol. 4 Soundtrack)

    Let's Just Live

It used to feel like a fairy tale

Now it seems we were just pretending

We'd fix our world

Then on our way to a happy ending

Then it turned out life was far less like a bedtime story

Than a tragedy with no big reveal of the hero's glory

And it seems we weren't prepared

For a game that wasn't fair

Do we just go home

Can we follow through

When all hope is gone

There is one thing we can do

Let's just live

Day by day

And not be conquered by our sorrows

The past can't hold us down we must break free

Inside we're torn apart

But time will mend our hearts

Move onward not there yet so let's just live

Can we get back to a happy place

We suffered so much pain and sorrow

After yesterday is there any way we can trust tomorrow

Will we go through life filled with strife like it's torn and tattered

Can we keep this up when we know that every hope has shattered

And the lesson isn't new

That some dreams just can't come true

When it finally falls

And the battle's through

When our faith is gone

And there's nothing left to lose

Let's just live

Day by day

And not be conquered by our sorrows

The past can't hold us down we must break free

Inside we're torn apart

But time will mend our hearts

Move onward not there yet so let's just live

When it feels like there's nothing

Worth living for

Everything is broken

The light's not there anymore

And the story takes an unexpected turn

A friend is suddenly gone

We can cry our lives away

But if they were here they'd say

Go forward, you must keep moving on

Let's just live

Just one day let's forget about our problems

Let's fall in love with life and just be free

The sun will never fade

The night won't steal our day

Let's dance and laugh and love and let's just live!

    This Life is Mine

Mirror

Can you hear me?

Do I reach you?

Are you even listening?

Can I get through?

There's a part of me that's desperate for changes

Tired of being treated like a pawn

But there's a part of me that stares back from inside the mirror

Part of me that's scared I might be wrong

That I can't be strong...

I've been afraid, never standing on my own

I let you be the keeper of my pride

Believed you when you told me I was nothing on my own

Listen when I say

I swear it here today

I will not surrender, this life is mine

Amazing how you conquered me,

Chained me in servility and made me see

The world the way you told me to

But I was young, and didn't have a way to know the truth

Born to live your legacy,

Existing just to fill your needs,

a casualty of this so-called family

That you have turned into a travesty

But I don't intend to suffer any longer

Here's where your dominion falls apart

I'm shattering the mirror that kept me split in pieces

That stood between my mind and my heart

This is where I'll start

I'm not your pet, not another thing you own

I was not born guilty of your crimes

Your riches and your influence can't hold me anymore

I won't be possessed, burdened by your royal test

I will not surrender, this life is mine

Shame that it took so long to rescue me

From the guilt you used to tie me to your family tree

I guess your training failed, you're not in charge, I'm free

Your patriarchal prison won't hold me

Now this conversation's finally over,

Mirror Mirror, now we're done

I've pulled myself together now

My mind and heart are one

Finally one

I'm not your pet, not another thing you own

I was not born guilty of your crimes

Your riches and your influence can't hold me anymore

I won't stay possessed, burdened by your royal test

I will not surrender, this life is mine

    Bad Luck Charm

Pain

is your reward for being near me

Fate

won't be your friend when I'm around

Blame

Me for the tragedies that follow

Grave

The situations that surround

I'm a harbinger, I cannot lie

I will change the color of your life

I don't mean to bring you pain

But I will just why, I can't explain

I am no one's blessing

I'll just bring you harm

I'm a cursed black cat,

I'm an albatross,

I'm a mirror broken,

Sad to say, I'm your bad luck charm

Shame

Hang my head in constant sorrow

Rain

On every day you need a light

Strain

To see some fortune in tomorrow

Bane

is what I am to every life

You should trust one thing, take my advice

If you linger close, it's a hefty price

You and I are not the same

You don't want the burden of my name

I am no one's blessing

I'll just bring you harm

I'm a cursed black cat,

I'm an albatross,

I'm a mirror broken,

Sad to say, I'm your bad luck charm

A guaranteed catastrophe

A tear that's bound to fall

A sure train wreck

and you'll soon regret

the day I came to call

I'm a cursed black cat

I'm an albatross,

I'm a mirror broken,

Sad to say, I'm your bad luck charm

    Bmblb

There's a garden where I go

If you meet me there, no one will know

In the springtime, in the sun

We can be alone without anyone

All the butterflies and the birds

Keep our secret, no they won't say a word

But they watch us and they know

And they're happy as they see our love grow

We'll sit for a while as I drink in your smile

It feels like a dream that's come true

My head starts to buzz

And my heart fills with love over you

Baby can't you see

You could be with me

We could live inside a garden of ecstasy

You could be my Queen

I could be your dream

Our lives like a fantasy

Baby set me free

Let me be your bumblebee

Now the flowers are in bloom

And you chased away my darkness and gloom

When the wind blows through the trees

And your voice is like a song in the breeze

My doubts disappear every time that you're near

Clouds seem to run from the sky

The thought of your kiss sends my soul into bliss

I get high

Baby can't you see

You could be with me

We could live inside a garden of ecstasy

You could be my Queen

I could be your dream

Our lives like a fantasy

Baby set me free

Let me be your-

Like a serenade

Every word you say

Has me falling

More and more in love with you

Like a party beat

You are oh so sweet

Every day is sunny

Tastes like honey

Feels so alive

Take me back to the hive

Baby can't you see

You could be with me

We could live inside a garden of ecstasy

You could be my Queen

I could be your dream

Lives like a fantasy

Baby set me free

Let me be your bumblebee

As usual, the OST contains arguably better storytelling than the show proper. At the very least, the show would have been better if it was closer to what the songs presented.

"This Life is Mine" turned out better than I thought it would. I like the slow build up from slow and depressing to fast and empowering. Great job on that one. Conversely, "Bad Luck Charm" wasn't as good as I thought it'd be. "Bmblb" was just all kinds of adorable but love songs in RWBY are always adorable.

In regards to "Let's Just Live", it's arguably the second best from a storytelling perspective in that it conveys very well what I feel the writers were trying for with Volume 4. If the volume had managed to convey the emotions of the song and Ruby's letter to Yang, it probably would have been pretty good. That being said, removed from the context of the show, it's easily the weakest song. It's just bland and boring and can't hold a candle to the previous three OPs.

So I just pre-ordered the Volume 4 soundtrack from iTunes and ended up getting four of the songs (Let's just Live, Bad Luck Charm, This Life is Mine and Bmblb) right now. Only listened to the first so far but I've enjoyed what I've heard.

Looking at iTunes UK, it looks like those four songs can be individually purchased before the full album is released on the 16th.

That works for me because the only two songs I care about are Bad Luck Charm and This Life is Mine, so I can purchase those now and forget about the rest of the album.

Edit to add:

I've just had a chance to listen to the four.

I think I agree with a previous post: 'Bad Luck Charm' is a little disappointing. It's certainly not bad, it's just not as good as I thought it would be. I suppose it doesn't help that the use of black cats for bad luck is a jarring image for me — in British folklore, black cats bring good luck, not bad luck.

'This Life is Mine' does live up to its promise, however, and is now my favourite of the Volume 4 songs I've heard.

'Let's Just Live' is better than I thought it would be. I'm not a fan of most of the show's opening songs, but I now think this is the best of the four.

'Bmblb' is pretty standard for the show's love songs — it repeats themes that occur in all the other love songs and is pure sap. This one can join the rest of the show's love songs — in the bin.

...mkay, well, Bad Luck Charm, disappointing? Eh, I like the beat. The progression's nothing to write home about.

Funny, I didn't know black cats were considered "good luck" in any culture.

[up] It's something the UK and Japan have in common. Black cats are good luck in both cultures.

However, Americanisation has had its affect on both cultures. Younger generations are surprised when they find out their own culture traditionally believes black cats are good luck because they've grown up on American shows where black cats are signs of bad luck.

I googled it and yeah, it still surprises me. Black cats as a symbol of bad luck and misfortune is so ingrained into US culture I'd never really questioned it. Different regions, different symbols.

As such it's kind of funny that the black cat line in Bad Luck Charm is what's jarring. :)

I don't think that the British consider black cats good luck.

Well, since I am British, I'll refer you back to my previous post.

Here's some of the British folklore on the subject:

The black cat thwarts the Devil's strike. If a black cat crosses your path, it diverts the Devil's luck from you to it. As a result, the black cat is good luck for you because it takes on all the bad luck that would come for you if it wasn't present. note

If a black cat enters your home or ship, it's a good omen, and if the wife of a sailor wants her husband to be safe at sea, she needs to own a black cat in his name to protect his luck. note

If we put a saucer of milk out for the fairy cats on the night of Hallowe'en, the house will be blessed for the next year to come. If you don't put out a saucer of milk, your house will be cursed for the next year to go. Fairy cats are usually black. note

Like Japan, we regard tortoiseshell cats as lucky as well. And, centuries ago, it used to be illegal in Wales for cats to be killed or stolen.

In the UK, white cats are associated with bad luck because because their colour means they've been touched by ghosts. And Britain has ghosts everywhere. Everywhere.
