As much as I liked Dead Fantasy and would like it to continue, I'm not sure if there was any way for it to go on- Dead Fantasy was 99% fight scenes, and I'm not sure if anyone could animate them like Monty.
At least his dream project survived (which at the time wasn't so certain). But damn, it's such a shame Monty didn't live to see RWBY as it is now- not only its popularity post-Volume 2 and 3 skyrocketed, but we've got official Japanese manga and dub with all-star cast. Better yet, it's going to be broadcasted on Japanese TV!
That must've been a dream for him- for his pseudo-anime series to be so completely embraced by the capital of anime. He would've died...from happiness

tbh I think the RT animators are, at a technical level, just as good as Monty. It’s the creativity in movements and choreography that they lack.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterWhen I rewatched the series last, I have to admit that I couldn't see an obvious transition point where I could say "yeah, this is where Monty died". All four seasons have a mix of solid and meh fight scenes, and if the style has shifted over time, it's been the typical gradual development, not a sudden thing caused by Monty's unexpected death.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. So a plot point that very well could have been dropped but might be interesting come up again is, Blake as a criminal. Because when She was explaining her situation to Sun in Volume 1 she refers to herself as "a criminal in plain sight, hidden by a little, black bow" or mostly that.
It probably won't happen, but it could be something if she was also on the run and that's a thing she'll eventually after confront in Mistral. May also help with showing faunus discrimination. Just a thought.
The supposed Monty Oum fight quality and the apparent extreme drop in quality had always come off as an Informed Attribute to me.
I kind of wish people would stop talking about it as if it were a fact.

So, here's the synopsis of RWBY Volume 4 Director's Commentary.
Not really much crucial info, but an interesting read nonetheless.
I haven't got very far through the synopsis yet because the very first line made me pause. I had to back and check what, precisely, the opening scene of Volume 4 was. Don't know how I forgot, but I did.
The first time I watched that episode, the opening scene gave me a very strong memory of something, but I couldn't think what it was reminding me of - even though I compared it to Odo melting down into his puddle state at the time.
It's the Founders home world that the opening shot reminds me of. It's not simply the puddles, or that specific scene. There's something about that location and the colours of it, the desolate, muted sense surrounding it that reminds me of the atmosphere that was created by the special effects that showed us what the Founders' home world looked like. And, for those people who don't know Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, it was a barren world with a small piece of land jutting out of what appeared to be a vast ocean of some kind of shimmering liquid.
The piece of land jutting out had, tucked away within it, a garden of many objects and species of plants — it was a playground of sorts for the Changelings to practice their shapeshifting and just to exist as another form for a while. But it also had a strange, locked location (which was the key to the plot of the episode).
Beyond this area, the ocean of liquid was a vast race of Changelings, all in their puddle form, sharing a state of being known as the Great Link.
It was strangely compelling and creepy all at the same time. That's the feeling the introductory scene of Volume 4 gives me about Salem's landscape and those pools.
On the subject of that landscape — I can't decide if that purple crystal is a 'Fifth Dust' (let's face it, with four Dust types, there's bound to be a Fifth hidden away that turns out to be the key to everything), or a sort of 'Anti-Dust' (it could, of course, be both).
If the Dust influence are the Greek elements, then the fifth will be an aether/quintessence equivalent and probably be some kind of universal energy that will allow things such as space/time manipulation to be possible. If influenced by the Japanese elements, then the fifth would be Void, and play a similar role.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Brown.
Because they can float, so they must be made of wood.
Pretty sure that's the joke.

Yeah.
That depresses me quite a bit as well. I kind of hoped somebody who'd worked with Monty would pick it back up and try to finish out whatever animation Monty had tucked away, or maybe some of his notes on where he wanted it to go, but, it seems like that hasn't happened.
I mean RWBY was his dream project it seems so at least he got to see it come to life, heck, actually give it life and continue to nurture it. How many creators who work on things that get adapted into big-budget films get to say that?
But dang it if that last teaser he did for Namine fighting alongside Vincent Valentine wasn't cool.
