Whether they succeeded in making Jaune like Sokka is a different matter from whether he was partially inspiration for Jaune's character.
And I never really found Sokka funny, and I don't think Jaune was ever supposed to be. But they do have the self-doubt and putting up facade things going for them, though they were different kinds of facades. Also, Jaune is basically guaranteed to not stay a normie forever.

I count that less as Jaune being funny and more as Jaune being awesome.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Sokka and Jaune are the "funny guy" or the group but their humor is diferent: Sokka was a cranky men who he try to be the one sane men and also something of a surrogate audience with all the crazy shit around him.
Jaune on the other hand is a stright out butt monkey and one who screw up more of the time, actually I think one of the reason the whole Sun thing was so bad is because they try to cramp Jaune role into him.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I think most of the elements in common between RWBY and Avatar are more convergent evolution than anything else. "Elemental themes" and "Mistral is Asian-esque and so is Avatar" and "it has a Smart Guy character who is The Strategist" are all pretty thin parallels. Even if Jaune was inspired by Sokka per Word of God, "inspired by" doesn't mean "Expy of".
Most of what they have in common comes from the fact that they're both kid-friendly (but not too kid friendly) action-adventure fantasy shows.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. It certainly helps that they're both YA oriented heavily animesque western animation series.

So since Chibi is a Lighter and Softer version of the main show, what would a Darker and Edgier gritty reboot look like since that trend has yet to die out?

Well, Darker and Edgier would probably mean the show's opening fight would end up having much more of an overlap with Quentin Tarantino than just the name of the shop.

...what everyone else said.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Seconding Bloodborne. That's like the darkest interpretation I can think of for RWB Ys world without it going into dull storytelling.
The Grimm get chainsaws and other murder implements strapped to their limbs. And eyepatches.

You know, I had completely discounted the Grimm when thinking about the idea. Mine was Ruby needing to fuel her addiction so she and her Blood Knight sister Yang become enforcers for Dust baron Weiss with Blake as their ninja assassin, going ingredients up against the Torchwick syndicate.
I like the Bloodbourne idea better.

Considering the show appears to be setting up for an increasingly cosmic storyline as things go forwards, I feel like the Bloodborne comparison will only get better and better with time. Especially if it tends towards Lovecraft Lite rather than something along the lines of Xenoblade Chronicles.

I've begun to compare Jaune to Cloud Strife for a few reasons:
- 1. Both are blondes with BFS's
- 2. Both had worn a dress at some point.
- 3. Both lost a friend to a villain (Pyrrha to Cinder and Aerith to Sephiroth)
- 4. Both now wear a red thing to remember those fallen friends (Jaune wears a red sash to remember Pyrrha and Cloud wears a red band on his arm to remember Aerith)
- Bonus: They both also have a strong friendship with another female character (Ruby and Tifa respectively)
All of those are highly superficial and the first one isn't even accurate. Jaune's sword is a normal size and even its awesome new form really isn't all that big.
Anyone know when the soundtrack is going to drop?
