also they let slip that ren's semblance specifically makes people tranquil
Lindsey also said that Ruby's "always stay positive" mindset will catch up to her eventually cuz of all the shit she's been dealing with

"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterWell, I watched most of that video, and have mixed thoughts on it. On one hand, I actually did look for whole volumes critiques of this today and he was actually kind of funny; on the other hand, he seems overly nitpicky on certain things that either have obvious answers or are only wrong because he's looking at it from a weird perspective (from my perspective). Still, it's only part one of a multi-part thing so I might look into it again. Plus he brought up some things that bothered me but I hadn't seen anyone here mention.
Though, I have to deduct some points for thinking that Seraph Of The End (and to a lesser extent, Attack On Titan) is actually good.

Ah, right. Grimm repellent.
Is it oddly fitting that the avatar of Monty is the one with the ability to actively repel Grimm. It's unique, powerful, yet not entirely broken. Heck, it could Hand Wave how easily they were able to fight off the Grimm in Volume 2. Calmer heads and passive spirits attract fewer Grimm.
Well they reversed Pyrrha's The Ace with Broken Ace and eventually Killed Off for Real. I would be shocked if Ruby didn't reverse course. She's going the same route that Snow Villers from Final Fantasy 13 did. Just with fewer dudebro moments.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!ya, kara said the semblance was fitting cuz that's how monty made her feel IRL all the time
ps. that was a fun episode of always open. it's easy to forget how everyone besides barbara is super different from their character
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterI haven't watched the video yet, but I don't think that's much of a slip. It's pretty obvious that's what he's doing to himself and Nora in the flashback, and it makes sense, given that the Grimm are attracted by emotion (specifically negative emotion). I didn't have the free time to comment on the flashback episode, but I would have talked about my reaction to this - specifically, the question in raised in my mind about how the Grimm 'see' the world — Ren's Semblanace (which did look like 'emotional invisibility' rather than actual invisibility, and plays on association of the colour grey with the idea of being emotionless, detached or emotionally rock steady) raises the big question of whether Grimm can see the world the way we do. If they struggle to identify something we can plainly see just because the emotions have settled - meditated - right down then their ability to perceive and comprehend the world is not the same as a human's.
Besides, it shows us why a culture would make the extreme decision to try regulate an entire population's ability to express emotion (Mantle) in an attempt to protect against the Grimm.
Anyway, that's what I'd have said had I had the opportunity to comment on the episode at the time it first came out.
That's no surprise. The show's clearly heading there. I consider her optimism to be a plot point. I mean, even if there weren't signs in the show that it'll become vitally important (like the episode 1 narration and Salem's speech at the end of Volume 3), various songs hit us over a head with a hammer about it being a plot point (look at the lyrics for 'Divide'). The show and the songs have been pretty much telling us that the key to Salem's victory lies with breaking Ozpin, and the key to breaking Ozpin is to break Ruby's optimism.
RRNJ would go with Oscar's tommies, and fit with the fact they're heading towards an academy that has an Autumn-themed headmaster's office...
...
... All right, I just like the colour orange.
Anyway, that review video.
I haven't watched all of that review yet (i will do so tomorrow) but my first impressions aren't too good.
It's not that I don't agree with certain things (I share his problems with character movements and some character appearances in Volume 4, for example — running did seem strangely stilted and almost like a slow floating rather than actual running, and I agree with Mercury's appearance being off at the beginning of the first episode; I also had issues with Jacques' appearance, as did a number of people on this forum — Jacques looked much better at the end of Volume 3).
However, there are things like his nitpick of Salem's first conversation that leave me quite dubious (and, for all the issues I could take with Salem's first scenes in the show, I must say that what he chooses to latch on to are pretty poor nitpicks; he doesn't even give a particularly wonderful recap of what's occurred in the show to date - I put this down to the fact that some of his assumptions and interpretations of events to date are frankly a little strange given what actually occurred on screen during the previous volumes).
Anyway, I haven't got very far into the review yet, and he may hit his stride further in. I'll be watching it properly tomorrow.
Edited to add: Heh. I just spotted LSBK's review of the review. Looks like I've been ninja'd... we'll see tomorrow when I finish watching it.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Watched the video. I didn't see where he was wrong for anything, he was nitpicky and brought up some incredibly trivial things, but... every time he did, I couldn't help but think "huh, he's not wrong".
Taking what he said at face value, that's just what he thinks as he's watching. I don't usually get that deep into it, but I do know that I tend to pick up on issues a lot of viewers don't so I'm somewhere in between. And I always find that super minor stuff really interesting, as long as people aren't too caustic about it.
edit: For the larger criticisms, I am pretty much in agreement with everything he said, except I seem to like later RWBY more than him and earlier RWBY less.

Yuri Lowenthal (Mercury Black, Sasuke, ect.) had a reddit AMA the other day, and some of the answers he gave have to do with RWBY
He's just as upset as everyone else that Mercury didn't talk during season 4.
He says Yang would beat both Sasuke and Mercury. (In quality maybe, but not in an actual fight.)
Yeah, that video of the RWBY critique is a mixed bag. I agree with stuff like the poor fight choreo, almost zero portrayal of Faunus oppression and Oscar's baffling introduction. But his other criticisms are either nitpicks, which are fine, or stuff with either obvious answers , or are questions that don't really need answering. For example, Weiss is the heir she IS the eldest eligible child, as it's suggested that Winter has been sort of disowned.
I did get a kick out of "front foot forward". Huh, I must have heard it as right foot forward before.
Part of me thinks that Neo would have been better off dying along with Roman because they never actually bothered establishing a character for her without him. I suppose they will do that should she appear again, but I feel like it'll come off as a bit forced.
Also, finding out more about Team SSSN would be cool too, I guess.
Watched the review. I agree with basically everything he said and am rather disappointed that he didn't do similarly styled reviews for the previous volumes (Volume 1 was reviewed by some other guy, Volume 2 only got its finale reviewed in a group vlog style, and Volume 3 also got a vlog review followed by a three part discussion).
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Just throwing Neo away feels like a waste. Then again, a problem is that all we know of her is "icecream lil' psycho who's also Roman's right-hand" and with Roman gone that's a part gone, too.
I suppose we can still learn of her normally, via flashback episodes or just ordinary interactions with whoever she answers to now, if anyone... Maybe The Torch may be relighted yet.
Or just bring him back.
A funny way to kill a candle-themed villain would have been, I don't know, the hero extinguishing his points before killing him off. Or setting him on fire.
Instead Ruby gives him a minor Shut Up, Hannibal!, before he proceeds to beat her with a cane, and then gets killed because he failed to pay attention to his surroundings. Which I guess extinguishes his world view but not in a way I find amusing.
Biggest disappointment is we never learn what his Semblance is.
