Yeah, though I have to wonder what Tyrian's final appearence in the volume is going to entail. Ruby actually getting nabbed by Tyrian would put the plot on the fast track, and we'd finally get to hear Salem's side of the story (and we've only barely seen Ozpin's to begin with), which is something I'm extremely curious about.

Now that you say it, it feels rather predictable, but it does make some semblance of sense.
But assuming the rescue party sets out immediately, what then? The journey to Haven has been cut short and Relics appear irrelevant since the confrontation with the apparent main villain is bound to happen by the end of Vol. 5 (unless they can somehow get into Salem's Spooky Cathedral, nab Ruby and sneak out, assuming they even know where it is).
Salem obviously wants the relics and the maidens for a reason, and presumably she wants Ruby alive in order to try and talk her into a Face–Heel Turn. Depending on just how awful the implied Awful Truth about Ozpin and/or the world of Remnant turns out to be, we could be in for a major Plot Twist along the lines of Xenoblade Chronicles (or maybe along the lines of the Cosmic Horror Reveal of Bloodborne given other similarities) if Ruby ends up meeting Salem so early in the show.
That's also assuming Ruby doesn't end up escaping on her own, possibly with the help of a certain pair of sellswords (Emerald and possibly also Mercury) who are just now realizing they are way over their heads.
Edit: Looking at the fanfic section for Cosmic Horror Reveal, apparently there's a RWBY fanfic in which Jaune turns out to posseess the soul of the brother of an unspeakable cosmic horror that is the master and creator of the Grimm, at least going by the description. This was seemingly written before Salem's first proper appearance and before Qrow's exposition dump on the twin creator deities, which makes it seem remarkably prescient to that extent at least.

Ah, but that would set up M&M's for a Heel–Face Turn, wouldn't it?
I suppose the cosmic revelation of eldritch truths can shake up even someone like Mercury - who's proven to be a douchey douche - into gooddom, or at least into neutraldom. Assuming this is the case, what becomes of Cinder? Do they sneak her out? Does she want to leave? How will she perceive the two leaving her?
@RWBY x Bloodborne: Ah, I remember one of the earliest pieces of crossover art, Ruby introducing her grandpa on a wheelchair. These two works share a startling amount of similarities, when you think about it.

It might just end up setting up a Heel–Face Turn for Emerald who might very well end up taking Pyrrha's slot in the JNPR Cast Herd, assuming we ever go back to the old setup. Or if they weren't kidding about there being more to him than we've seen, it might be a Heel–Face Turn for just Mercury, while Emerald stays out of personal loyalty to Cinder.

Hm.
Regarding the Nuckelavee, one thing I've seen has me wondering while the other came to me a moment ago.
Starting with the latter... can RNJR (and Qrow) even hurt the thing without bullshit or silver eyes shenanigans? All Big Grimm we've seen apart from Nevermores and Tajitus required specific circumstances to be killed, were felled by overwhelming firepower or were explicitly written as immune to anything protagonists can throw at them:
- Players and Pieces! Deathstalker had to me nailed with its own stinger. Nora helped, but I could have sworn it was still wriggling about when it fell down the ravine.
- The Breach! Deathstalker was gibbed by Coco whose gear is explicitly PvE.
- Goliaths are stated to be immune to anything anti-personnel and their sheer size makes them likely immune to just about anything man-wielded.
- The Sea Dragon had to take a ship to the face to be killed.
- Smaugrimm was only frozen by silver eyes shenanigans which are stated to be lethal against Grimm.
- Beringel from the trailer was no-selling Ruby's bullets handily, despite being much smaller than any of the examples above.
Now, the Nuckelavee isn't that big when we see it first at Kuroyuri; about nine feet? But since then it has grown. The hoofprint is all but stated to be its doing. The trees shake as it walks. Its lair is fairly big, all things considered.
So, assuming it's Silver Eyes Time, the last time Ruby used those, Pyrrha has just bitten the dust and she was already under extreme emotional duress (witness to Penny's death, had seen Yang and Blake hurt, just got a tearful call from Jaune begging them to save Pyrrha). So, if those want to kick in, someone has to bite it or be seriously injured. That can be anyone: Qrow, Jaune, Renora.
Now, onto the second point. Speaking of Renora... there's a suspicion that Nuckelavee didn't appear in Kuroyuri by accident, but rather was chasing Nora for whatever reason.
It feels a little too convenient that a Grimm based on legends with Nordic origin appeared in the town shortly after a terrified orphan in foreigner's clothes who we know is basically genderbended Thor. It even has a giant hammer in the middle of its lair.
So with that in mind... assume it remembers Nora. Maybe she's a stray from some faraway town that's been eluding it for a while. We already know Nuckelavee collects trophies from towns it razed. Maybe it just feels like chasing her. Renora shows up for timely cavalry moment to help Lancaster (and Qrow)... and it starts singling out Nora with grievous persistence. Ren puts two and two together.
The girl he's sworn to protect, who he knew basically all his life, the only other survivor of Kuroyuri is responsible (indirectly) for its very destruction. RT can be very vicious in cases like these, I feel. Does Renora sink like Titanic? Does Ren not mind? That's up in the air.
Well, uh, sorry for a wall of text. I just felt like sharing this with you guys. <.<
I think you're overthinking things a bit. Those things were problems because of their size and because of that point in the story. The wasn't really "specific circumstances" needed to defeat the Nevermore, Taijitsu,or whatever, just a plan.
Ruby couldn't snipe the Goliaths because they were just too big not because they were especially immune to being shot or anything.
Honestly, this thing is on the small size for "really big Grimm" and while it's obviously formidable, I think the situation and position they find themselves in add more to the danger.

I've explicitly excluded those two, actually.
And no, Oobleck says that Ruby's shots "would only agitate it" (the Goliath), so the implication as I see it is that its skin/armor is so thick it would be like throwing stones at it. Of course it's big, but even big things could likely be hurt if you hit where it hurts (in the eye, for example).

The implication seems that at the very least a round from a sniper rifle will only agitate so that would mean it's defense is high enough that it Ruby would have dealt very little damage to it. Considering it's caution it is possible to kill the implications are that it just requires a something more powerful than crescent rose sniper mode.
I would wager a combined effort might do the trick..

It's likely to be either Ruby figuring out how to use her Silver eyes or Jaune's semblance finally showing up, assuming they actually slay the beast and don't end up having to run away. If he has Healing Hands as some people have specualted, that's a way Qrow could get saved as well.

Does size really matter for a sniper rifle since correct if I am wrong, but I was certain the point is to aim carefully and take the target with a perfect shot. Generally by aiming for targets like the head or center mass.

Edit: incidentally, going off of his backstory, Ren is now Eren Jaeger, and Nora is Mikasa.
