    Episode 9
  • Dick move Yang. Punching your Dad with the robot arm.
  • Huh. So you can see Yang's...
  • Yang is adopting to that arm a bit too quickly.
  • Surprise attack by Taiyang. It was super effective.
  • Bone-headed? Yang? I mean, yeah, she kind of relied on her Semblance, but she pretty much carried Team RWBY and won every match for them. Give her some slack Taiyang.
  • LOL. So Taiyang is calling Yang out for overusing her Semblance the same way the fans were. Wasn't someone just criticizing Yang about her powerset?
  • Oh dang, Taiyang is voiced by Church. I can't believe I just noticed that.
  • It feels like the writers are expressing the fandom's criticisms of the characters through Taiyang and Qrow.
  • "Raven was great in so many ways." - Taiyang
  • I like how Taiyang built Raven up and then tore her down.
  • What is that in Yang's backpocket? I can't tell if that's a handkerchief, or just the inside of her pocket, but it's got a symbol of some kind on it.
  • I really like how they're using camera angles more in this season. Look at how it pivots around Yang and Taiyang in the direction they're throwing each other.
  • Weiss is about to summon a Servant.
  • Damn, Wheatley interrupted and Weiss didn't lose concentration.
  • Don't lie Wheatley. You can't summon awesome snow ghosts and you're envious.
  • A pie in the face of all those who thought Wheatley would be normal.
  • Did Weiss just... telekinetically slam a door in his face?
  • Clearly Weiss plays Dark Souls in her spare time.
  • Weiss, I know that window is coming out of your father's wallet, but it is going to be REALLY cold in that room.
  • Why on earth would a ninja turn around to check if they're being followed?
  • A whip-sword. Nice. And what are those blemishes on her shoulders?
  • Wow. Sun is really becoming that type of character, isn't he?
  • "Get off!" shouted as Sun keeps pouncing on her.
  • So his Semblance has a stamina limit.
  • Illia might be my new favorite character design. I'm fickle but, damn it, freckled ninja girl with a whip sword and chameleon powers. That's... that's just awesome.
  • Considering the wilds are infested with monsters attracted by the merest stomach aches, cramps, sprains, periods, or even mild contempt for your fellow man - who on earth had the idea or the time to make road signs in the middle of said wild? There must have been a lot of happy huntsman/tresses with a lot of happy pills that day. Matter of fact how did they have time to build roads way back when, assuming their technology was lesser back then and they had fewer means to defend themselves against the Grimm?
  • Ren is... uncharacteristically angry. I sense character development in 3...2...
  • NORA THIS IS A BAD IDEA.
  • JAUNE IS BEING SMART. LISTEN TO HIM.
  • NORA IS BEING DUMB.
  • GODDAMNIT IT NORA.
  • QROW WAKE YOUR ASS UP AND SMACK SOME SENSE INTO THESE KIDS.
  • OH GOD DAMN IT THIS IS STUPID.
  • Sigh. -pinches temple- So I guess Ren and Nora will have a backstory episode next week.
  • THAT IS A BIG FOOTPRINT. Damn nature, you scary.
-
  • So Illia is supposed to have a "smaller butt/bust."
  • Her weapon reminds me of Samus's lightwhip-gun. To be fair, the only other time I've seen that was in Star Wars.
  • I like how their character sheets/building layouts are drawn out. :p

Overall, I guess this episode was okay. The previous episode provided more exposition, this was all a transition to the next act of the story. The fight choreography continues to... stay at a reasonable quality, but we're obviously coming off of the big Qrow vs Tyrian fight so it's expected we're not going to see any huge increases for a bit. Weiss and Wheatley's relationship continues to sour, and Weiss might be making the early stages of an escape plan? Yang's recovery seems to be going well and it seems like the show is indirectly addressing certain complaints about Yang through the use of Taiyang's character - I'm always a little amused when creators nudge at the fanbase like that (the team attack names, Yang's admission that she doesn't have much of a motivation to her team).

Still, not much happened. 7 out of 10 for not being completely boring.

It looked like her chameleon ability was affecting it somehow.

Thoughts on this episode:

The Good—Illia has the potential to be an interesting villain (at least design wise), Sun may be out of action for a bit, Yang is finally back on her feet, setup for Ren/Nora development, Weiss preparing to escape her sideplot.

The Bad—Sun gets to save Blake again, the team splitting up is liable to be dumb as hell, Whitley's still boring, and I still hate Yang's new outfit.

When did Sun save Blake? Sun helped Blake.

On the Whitley bit, my first thought was that he didn't have the family Semblance, but Winter explicitly said they all could do it so, I don't know. They could have just changed their mind about that, but it could just mean they changed their mind on that bit.

@Rhyme Beats, what do you mean? Jacques' hair is naturally black and went white with age (or stress) whereas Whitley's hair has always been white like every other natural Schnee.

Your absolute hatred for Sun is getting hilarious if you seriously consider that a con.

Something like this was inevitable really. Better him than one or both of her parents, I guess. Though by the end of this their house is probably going to get burned down and them taking capture or something.

Edit: Also, they addressed a problem a lot of people had with Yang's fights. I wonder if this was always their intention or if it's just a bit of damage control. I'd go with the former.

Oh, it's not Sun I hate. It's the writers who decided to do this with him. Once upon a time, Sun was a relatively fun character whose worst crime was that he was in the way of one of the fandom's favourite gay ships. I enjoyed him in Seasons 1-3. Then this season happened.

The sad thing is, it's such an easy fix. All he has to do is apologize for being an ass in his first appearance this season. That's all it would take to solve the problem. "I am sorry that I came after you without your permission. I will not do it again." But the show's refused to do that, which means that everything he does now is filtered through the lens of Episode 3's idiocy. I can't view what he does positively when the only reason he's there to do anything at all is because of having followed her without her permission.

When you do something like that, you alter the character. You can step back from it, but that requires a conscious writing decision, not just pretending it never happened.

I expect by the end of this he'll apologize for how stupid he acted. They usually do in situations like this.

It really does feel like sun hatred though. Considering the white fang probably following Adam's philosophy sun wasn't wrong to watch her back. Which he probably wouldn't have followed if Blake had decided not to be a loner.

Example if she had waited for Yang to recover and both went sun would not have an argument to stand on because Blake would already have her partner watching her back. She didn't so sun decided to do just that. Be the person that watches her back.

[up] It would be better to have them both made dumb choices despite good intentions and acknowledge their own mistakes without making one look better than the other.

Think like Frodo and Sam.

Frodo intentionally went off alone to walk into mordor, but Sam followed him anyways.

You know, having a Never Live It Down mentality with a character is a bad idea. Just get over it. That 's all what I am going to say if it means to agree to disagree.

Well, he had a fairly understandable misconception of what she was trying to do and why. But I don't think that really matters for the problem with the situation.

Frodo and Sam have a very different relationship, one that Blake and Sun (or Yang) don't share. Even besides that, carrying The One Ring is a very dangerous task that almost corrupted Frodo into keeping it, so Sam coming along is one of genuine concern for Frodo's health and mindful of the difficult task he has.

the thing is, sun is not portrayed as in the right. he's portrayed as an asshole who happens to have a point. just because it's fiction doesn't mean every character has to be a paragon of good behavior, and if they were, we would end up with something like sesame street.

Problem is Blake is known to not ask for help. She has admitted to the fact that running away is what she does. She did when her team learned she was a fanus. She pretty burned herself out in burning the candle with little concern how it affected the team and decided to just leave without telling her team anything. Yang only knew she ran because Sun told her. We can guarantee that if Sun asked Blake would have refused.

Which is why both should be made to acknowledge they made mistakes.

Also yes this is the conversation that won't die anytime we see the Blake storyline.

^exactly. he's a foil. the interesting thing is that he fills the role of the nagging wife with a heart of gold to the gruff retired marine, but it's more noticeable because he's a dude.

@Ambar: As far as RNJR splitting up goes, well the show acknowledges it via Jaune; it's a bad idea, but they're out of options because Qrow is dying; Ren and Nora are going on ahead up the mountain trail while the other two are heading around the mountain. Storywise, I get the distinct impression we aren't going to see Ren and Nora on their own beyond maybe a scene or two setting them up to show up as The Cavalry when Ruby and Jaune inevitably end up in trouble.

As far as Qrow goes, I'm not sure how to rate his odds; yes there's death flags cropping up, but on the other hand his death seems unlikely occur before the volume finale, which is 5 episodes after he got poisoned in the first place, and I find it somewhat unlikely that Qrow being poisoned will drag out for that long.

I genuinely wonder if this same conversation would take place if Yang was in Sun's situation, or if Sun and Blake's positions were switched.

In any case, this conversation isn't going anywhere nor will it ever go anywhere. Best move onto a new topic, like say, what is Weiss planning on doing

Or is Qrow gonna die? What is Oscar gonna do?

So Ilia's weapon is part rapier / smallsword and part chainwhip. Interesting.

Looking at it again - I was wrong, it's not affected by the chameleon thing, it stays the same color. And it's not a "lightwhip" but a "Regular" whip... or a "Dust" whip.

Which seems incredibly impractical, but then again, this is Remnant. Plus her target, Blake, is a cat, and I guess that just makes sense.

Some other things:

  • Weiss's revolver-rapier has a slot with purple dust. What on earth does purple dust do? Does it poison? Does it make its victim extremely relaxed? Does it intoxicate?
  • So black glyphs are gravity-related... but this seems to function more like straight-up telekinesis now. I thought the glyphs acted more as anti-gravity beacons or something. But she manipulated gravity there so that the door would swing horizontally. I'm no physicist but something just seems wrong there.
  • I have to question Illia's purpose. She obviously was just there to spy on Blake, but she also had zero qualms about fighting back, and she had Blake and Sun in her sight. Clearly the implication here is that she couldn't handle both of them at once, but she'd already taken Sun out and probably could've snatched up Blake too, or at least kidnapped Sun and given her a reason to come to Adam or something.
  • Kind of ironic that Sun, whose Semblance gives off an electric glow, gets taken out by an electric attack. His Aura Level must be garbage.
    • Also there seems to be a pattern of all the guys in this show having low stamina - there's Jaune, Ozpin not lasting 10 rounds with Cinder, Ironwood needing cybernetic enhancement, Qrow bottoming out while fighting Tyrian, and now Sun getting tased after a single attack.

[up] The basic dust types can be mixed in different ratios for varying effects, so it's probably some Red/Blue mixture.

As far as Illia's weapon goes, that's not a rapier because it doesn't have edges, which makes it a smallsword/estoc whip. Finally the Threaded Cane makes an appearance!
