I didn't watch last week's episode until now because holiday stuff going on, but hey, things are finally moving! The Oscar and Weiss plots are actually progressing! Pity the Tyrian fight was shenanigans. Ruby holding Crow back by insisting on entering the fray was understandable, but everyone else just standing around while Ruby was sniping (and then letting Tyrian run off unmolested at the end) was dumb. If you're going to have the whole team there, then completely ignoring them during a fight is annoying. Have them punched so hard they go flying off and spend the entire fight running back. Have them smashed through a building and spend the fight digging themselves out of the rubble. Have them fighting a group of grimm that Tyrian brought along as backup. Do something with them, don't just have them literally standing there watching, and especially don't let them allow the basically-defeated villain to run off without so much as throwing a smoke bomb or something.
Also Ruby going "Salem? Who?" is basically the last season and a half in a nutshell. When your main character has no idea what the hell the primary antagonist even is four seasons into your show...
Looks like I can't watch the most recent episode until tomorrow, though. Oh well.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. So we've gotten a whole lot of information about what exactly is going on, and our heroes are no longer Locked Out of the Loop on the maidens, and we finally learned what the relics are for. I made my theory about Salem intending to overthrow the gods as a bit of a throwaway speculation, but the supposed creation myth of the world of remnant, the creatures of Grimm, and of the human race definitely lends some credence to the notion that RWBY will have a Gnosticism influenced cosmology.
We definitely haven't gotten the whole story yet, and I distinctly get the feeling that we're still only seeing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Awful Truth about the world. It's also quite striking how little Ozpin seems to have told Qrow about Salem, presumably because of the personal connection between them, whatever that might be.

So as far as the screentime breakdown went for this episode:
For Episode 8:
RNJR/Qrow: (7m, 7s)+(4m, 58s)+(45s)=(12m, 50s), running total=(47m ,38s)
Blake: (4m, 12s)+(1m, 21s)=(5m, 33s), running total=(26m, 12s)
Blake thus far has gotten the most focus beyond RNJR for this season, and Yang the least, to the point where Salem and co have gotten more focus than her. Assuming RNJR takes the center of the stage for the remainder of the season and we only get brief interludes to the other members of team RWBY like we got during this episode, that leaves about 25 minutes of screen-time for the others, so I doubt we're going to see any of them rejoining the main cast herd by the end of the volume.
I think it's quite likely he'll live. Raven's probably going to make an appearance next episode, and people have 'd this might be the introduction of Jaune's semblance as a sort of Healing Hands thing.
Oh yeah, we also got a reason for why Qrow was keeping his distance from team RNJR; his semblance gives people around him bad luck.

Well, that's presumably why Tyrian randomly fell through a roof during the last episode, and why that wooden beam nearly fell on Ruby out of the blue. Which makes his semblance a bit of a Blessed with Suck situation.

Considering how he phrased it I think it just bad luck for those around him, although that definition does include his current opponents so it's not 100% bad. I do wonder if it's a build up over time effect or just a passive debuff to everybody's luck stat.
@ Jovian:
They did try to interfere once and got curb stomped effortlessly by Tyrian and told by Qrow to keep their distance. They can't attack from afar because they don't have the weapons for it; Nora has a grenade launcher, Ren has spray and pray machine gun pistols and Jaune has a sword, the only member of team RNJR who has a weapon geared towards precision shots is Ruby and Tyrian blocked those shots with his tail without even looking at her. And as for them letting Tyrian escape we had a discussion about that earlier, my key points was:
- NJR are already hurt and on low aura and Tyrian wiped the floor with them previously. Tyrian is at his weakest but is still a dangerous opponent far out of their league.
- Qrow is hurt with no aura and Ruby also has no aura, both could get hurt if they start a fight right next to them.
- There's no way for team RNJR to stop Tyrian leavings without killing him, and that's a line they're not willing or ready to cross yet. Hell looking back at this when given the choice Ruby targeted his stinger over his head. RNJR aren't killers (of people. Grimm don't count, and if dRoy was here then I can imagine the jokes about faunus popping up right now).

Kind of upset that Salem gets brought up in during the exposition dump and all we're told is that "she's mysterious". I understand the need to not tell us everything for whatever reveal they're setting up, but the least the show can do is throw us a bone with a hint.

re: Shaoken — I'm not saying that they needed to actually make a positive contribution, just that it would've been nice if the show didn't forget about their existence for five minutes. Showing them try to help and realizing they were actually hurting and stop would've been fine — or even just have them about to try to help and have Jaune stop them before they screw things up would've been something. As it was, they were just completely ignored, which is narratively very lazy.

Just had this exact convo pages ago. I just decided not worth continuing since it reached that point where almost nothing more could add. Or well, I did consider it with the fact at the end they literally moved into a defense position in front of Qrow and had their weapons up ready to keep fighting and enough time to shoot, but eh. I figured not much a difference and nothing I'm getting from arguments that's enlightening beyond an idea that they're avoiding killing him, which I feel opens up a whole new bag of problems.
So I just realized something upon reflection on Jaune's conflict with Qrow
Jaune thinks Ozpin ended Pyrrha's life and bade her to dig her own grave with his dark, sick, cruel design and convinced her the world could be saved. He asks Qrow (indirectly) if he has no shame signing Pyrrha up for his war. With the revelation that the Academies were built to protect the Relics, he's convinced that Ozpin's training the huntsmen to fight what, as he can see with Cinder and Tyrian, they cannot beat, and as a result pay for the sins that Ozpin's created as he sacrifices them for his need. As as he can see now, slaughter's coming, the end's drawing near, and Ozpin will regret his deeds.
first of all: saludations and happy new year(or less crappy depending of your worldview)
Second, was imagine what it would be a song of blake about Adam which of course it have to be all emo, which eventually made one some to pop in my mind
And yes, it have to be that band, Blake deserve no less.
and about a song that express what Adam feel about Blake....well, that was easy:
Yeah, it just pop into my mind right away...can you feel the edge?
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"...
Happy New Year.
You're a glass half empty kind of guy, aren't you?
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!RWBY undoubtedly has some issues. Bringing attention to them isn't going to be the end of the world. Hell, maybe if Rooster Teeth finally decided to stop their weird 'we're above criticism' thing, it might make the show a bit better.
"Evii is right though" -Saturn "I didn't know you were a bitch Evii." -Lior ValUndoubtedly.
But, "awesome fight scene, good choreography" < "oh my god these side characters were doing nothing!"
It still sounds very glass half empty.
"This kung fu movie had a really good premise and cast but unfortunately they wasted 60 of the 90 minutes on fight scenes. Shame."

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I wonder where Wyldchyld and LSBK is. This episode actually did a lot for one of those off the cuff, fairly out there s I made about the setting for lack of any concrete information beyond heavily telegraphing there's a great many Awful Truths about the setting and about Ozpin in particular.
I am definitely inclined to think now that Salem either wants to overthrow the gods or intends to restore them to their "rightful" place as masters of creation, with Ozpin's original incarnation having either been responsible for casting them down or being tasked with upholding their divinely ordained order.

The episode's out.
- Exposition ahoy.
- Pffft..... hahahaha. I didn't think they would say anything about Blake's outfit. I was sort of torn on that one as well.
- That interaction was adorable. Life has compensated for Blake by giving her fun parents.
- Blake's parents continue to be the best parents on this show
◊. They're tripping so many death flags right now.
- Paternity seems to be a theme this season. Weiss and her dad, Yang and her dad, Qrow filling in a paternal role for Ruby, and now Blake and her dad. Meanwhile most of the moms are either dead or simply absent, off being warrior mavericks somewhere.
- This brothers of light and darkness thing sounds an awful lot like LOST
.
- The shading on Blake's eyes is really... nice.
- Her hair as well, you can see the curls moving along her shoulders.
to the animation team. Remember how stiff Yang's hair was back in Volume 1 whenever she took a handful of it?
- Okay... now I kind of fun Sun annoying. The boat-stalking was one thing. Now he's just kind of... ugh...
- Anti-upskirt technology is back.
- The story arc begun in Volume 3 is going to be finished by Volume 6 I'm betting. It'll start a new story arc with some loose ends like Maidens and Silver Eyes. But we'll be done with Salem and the relics at least for the immediate future. They'll explore some mini-arcs with Raven's warrior clan and whatever Ren's story is. Calling it.
- So everyone called it - I mean Cinder's plan/Salem's was pretty blatant but now Qrow's given his view on it.
- Please let the next Volume be about Vacuo. Vacuo sounds f'cking awesome. Seriously let's explore that place. It sounds like that episode of Adventure Time where Finn and Jake explore that city of thieves and their stuff kept getting stolen every 5-10 seconds of screen time.
- So Qrow is Touma Kamijou?
- Semblances just got a MAJOR DOSE OF FANFICTION FUEL.
- Damn it Qrow. Damn you and your vagueness!
- I have a feeling Ambar is going to enjoy this episode. :3
- Blake and... whoever this person is. Ninja-on-ninja action.
- Holy balls the animation budget - the lighting, the shadows, the mascara, the facial blush!
- "The White Fang is evil! I totally called it! And I'm bringing your daughter back!" - best line of Volume 4 hands down.
- The real disappointment I have with this scene is that Kali didn't immediately jump off the balcony after Sun. I'm kind of surprised she isn't an Action Mom.
- Qrow just sleeps up against a tree.
- LONG-HAIRED REN.
- PURPLE BLOOD.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!

OK So Qrow's Semblance is passive? And bad luck huh? I know this theory is mockable but Qrow being's Ruby's dad would make narrative sense here. He's got a reason to stay away from his daughter and clearly one last thing he's not telling her. Doesn't mean it will happen, but if it does it's not an Ass Pull.
I'm hoping that Ozpin himself isn't a god, but perhaps him and Salem have a more direct connection to the two gods than most people. It's clear that Ozpin is important enough to Aura surf, so he likely serves one inherent purpose to creation somehow.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.
