Also, I can think of like three reasons how Christmas was ruined this year.

qrow is just the type of dude to smirk all the time. his and tyrian's auras broke at the same time, so it was a pretty even match.

i think i've rewatched the fight like 38 times. i'm so excited that the team has gotten back into the groove of making fights look like brutal dances again rather than anime style swipe-swipe-retreat deals, and also getting creative again with using weapons as a partner rather than a tool.

I'll even say that the fight choreography is starting to exceed the older fights in some places. Biggest thing that irked me about the volume one and two are that they never seemed even. Aside from the part where Qrow slaps Tyrian around, this fight is full of actual exchanges where both parties are trading and parrying blows (man this part of the fight gets me so hot and bothered). Older fights, the best you got was something like Sun/Blake vs Torchwick where Torchwick is actively defending and at the end gets in a solid hit; otherwise, most every other fight just has one side roflstomping the other since the losing side mostly acts as a posed doll.

ALSO, biggest thing that makes me happy is that this was apparently the same team that did Sun/Blake vs the sea monster, a fight which I absolutely hated, so it's awesome to see such an increase in quality in just one volume.

I have to say, I've never gotten complaints about fights not being "even" enough. Maybe I just have bad eyes, because most stuff never came off to me like that. But then again, I don't consider one party having an advantage throughout the same as rolfstomping someone.

"Even" might not be the right word. But basically, almost all o the old fights, the losing side acts like a ragdoll or is strictly on the defensive and on their backfoot for part of the fight, then it switches around for a bit, repeat until one side loses. Don't get me wrong, it looks super cool, and maybe that was even the point up until now, but it's something that was noticeable, at least to me.

I've heard people compliment that because real fights aren't typically have a back and forth like that, but I wouldn't know from personal experience.

I mean, it makes sense to me, I don't image many fights actually have people getting equal hits in at the same time, or keep going for long if it really is just one person wailing on someone else.

But, it's not like people watch this for realism.

When I say overshadow, I mean in the sense that Qrow would be doing most of the heavy lifting for RNJR due to his experience.

He kept a low profile before, but I get the feeling he would only intervene on things they couldn't handle themselves, like Tyrian.

The poison RNJR forces to face those threats without Qrow's guidance.

real fights with weapons are also over in a second or two since you're likely to disable the attacking hand really quickly, and if they're not, they immediately turn into grappling and wrestling rather than smacking each other around. Also really fun to watch (UFC and HEMA I mean, not bumfights), but not what I come to RWBY for.

[up] That's the kind of thing Qrow would say, wouldn't he.

I can't get over Tyrian's little baby guns. They're just amazing. I'm also slightly upset that both Jacques and Wheatley are about as predictable as most thought. The latter at least seems to have some sort of his own agenda on mind.

i subscribe to the whitley theory in which he is not actively malicious; it's just that him bowing and scraping to father both saves him from abuse (abuse that used to be spread around three children, and with two flying the coop, now gets concentrated onto the remaining one) and gets him the throne, and he's well aware of both facets.

He seems to be Jacques favorite, but that probably has less to do with genuine affection and more to do with him being the only one to not seriously defy him.

He's the youngest so he already had two examples of how that plays out. Of course, he could just totally agree with Jacques, but, he's like 15 or 16, he could grow out of that.

[up][up][up] I've seen a few people theorizing that maybe Whitley isn't because of how he looked last episode and suggesting that maybe he's just completely terrified of Jacques and so willing to do absolutely anything to avoid the way he treats Weiss and Winter mixed with him being fairly bitter towards Winter and Weiss for rebelling and getting away...while he's still there and now getting more attention from Jacques than before as there's no one else to distract him or focus on.

I do like the idea of Wheatley just trying to survive on his own, but at the same time doesn't that make yet another villain-abuser?

I'm not sure how him being nice to Weiss plays into this, assuming it was a part of the ploy to begin with.

That seems to be what they were going for, but I still don't get how him being nice convinces Weiss to do anything she did.

If we had seen him pushing her to "stand up to father" or something that would be one thing but all we got was a little brotherly concern.

And while I'd prefer it's deeper than it seems, I've been saying I'd doubt he'd be purely antagonistic or helpful, it's probably safer to assume they're playing this straight.

[up]I hope not, Avatar try that with Azula after 3 season of being a complete psycho and it was just weak.

For what I see, Whietly since to just follow Jacques rules, he even said it "to defy father is foolish" he seen to be the "good boy" of the family.

Also, I really want to see Weiss mon, it would a total waste if she didnt apear

...She and Tyrian don't seem very similar to me. And the lesson wasn't "she's not that bad" it's that "she's a much more broken bird than she want anyone to believe", I don't think they tried to claim she wasn't responsible for her actions any more than they did with Zuko.

A few thoughts:

  • Liked the stuff with Ozpin and Oscar
  • The fight was badass
  • Jacques Schnee, welcome to my list of most hated characters ever.
  • Whitley is leaning towards the "I don't like him" side.
  • Is this the first episode to contain swearing?!?

I mean, it depends on what you consider a swear, but I'd say no. I'm amused that people take note of that.
