Just saw the episode.

Jacques is a complete ass, but him locking up Weiss hopefully means we're getting some sort of epic escape sequence like I wanted.

The Qrow and Tyrian fight was a step back into form, but Tyrian getting his tail cut off felt less epic than it should have been.

[up] (3) That's... impressive... o_o

[up] (2) Adam just wants to kill Everything Blake Loves (tm).

More seriously, we didn't know what Adam was in the Black Trailer. Blake gave him characterization in Volume 2 and we were to assume Blake left because he was turning into a violent dick. He sounded like a fallen mentor, and it had a chance to be a pretty platonic relationship that went sour. Adam could have been interesting at this point. Enter Volume 3, still interesting, morally questionable, not an insane dick, and getting bullied by Cinder after refusing to hunt for Blake.

Come the end of the season and he's in "KILL BLAKE VOL 3" mode. There's really nowhere for the character to go but down.

We didn't meet Jacques until this Volume's second episode, but most assumed him to be an emotionally abusive a-hole due to the lyrics from "It's My Turn." And... then he turned out to be an emotionally abusive a-hole, so I guess I bet on the wrong horse there.

[up]Yeah when you put Adam and Jaques as Abuser, Jacques come as pretty consistent: he show as controling dude who have strain the entire family by is dickishnest, hell when he said "People would like if you sing" feel perfect: sound resonable but you can feel him pulling the strings.

Adam on the other hand is wonky writing as is finest: from dude with not regret to human casualty to throwing the lives of other faunus to being bully by Cnder to Saying he did everything for Blake....yeah, is just weird.

Adam suffers from a villain problem: And Then What? after "I haz teh evilz planz".

The problem with Adam is that, with all the characters, he has been a bit out of focus and from the Black Trailer onward, he's just not likeable. He's more of a plot piece than a character. At least Jacques has the SDC and his conflict with Weiss.

[up][up]Actually Adam of all villians is the only one who have clear and proper plans: he want to overthrow humans and he want Blake to suffer from Friendzone him by choping everyone Hand, contrast with everyone who goal so far is....ehhh.....dunno.

What Adam suffer is that each moment he is in screen is pretty much a diferent chararter: a ruthless but focus chararter, them aparently some sort of Fallen hero, them colaborator and now somewhat cooler Kylo ren.

I this point is hard a coherent narrative to him, which is a shame because he is cool.

[up]Maybe but you could use a typical element of pity, the whole "He was a warrior that fell presure and turn evil" you know that sort of thing, now he is just the evil ex.

Adam needs more than "make Blake suffer" and "kill all humans", a little Cry for the Devil rather than just him being an a-hole. He has lackeys for that.

So...all I'm seeing here is that Black Adam needs more character characterization...

Which is...? Anything the moment he ever gets another appearance I guess.

Adam needs to remove one of Yang's limbs once per volume. We need to turn her into Genos.

After the second limb I'd hope Yang would prematurely cut the next limb off and then replace it with a bomb activated robotic limb that would blow Adam up the next time he tries that shit.

I loved that episode and it made me angry for reasons I'm going to bitch about later when on computer. Just with how volume 3 decisions lessen the impact of how even better this can be. It irritates me because I once more saw what I like about RWBY in this one and how certain decisions before I feel hold back its full potential.

Also, I don't get why they just let him run. He's screaming in pain and just lost his tail. Ruby can attend to Qrow, the other 3 should try to press the advantage and try to capture him while he's weakened and he fights his way free instead of just standing there.

For a bit less bitching, again, loved that fight and enjoyed the developments with Weiss. And wow, shockers, the character who looks and sounds like Malfoy and was stated to not have a positive relationship in the past with either of his sisters and is the antagonistic father's favorite turns out to have had a secret agenda. Who could have ever guessed?

That's not a knock against him or the writing, I just have a friend I must lord this over just like the time they kept giving Season 1 Harrison Wells the benefit of the doubt.

AH HAH. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

    This beautiful fricking episode

  • So either Oscar is actually the transsexual Spring Maiden with a really masculine voice, the Maiden power isn't as sexist as we were informed, or Ozpin really is The Old Man in the story and is somehow passing on his knowledge. Well if he'd stop being vague as hell about everything maybe we'd have some answers.
  • Jacques - hitting his teenage daughter who we know is capable of sending giant robots careening off of bridges, and who he knows is capable of killing giant, demonically-possessed suits of armor. This man is just cartoonishly evil.[tup]
  • Weiss, this is a clear Why Don't You Just Shoot Him? situation.
  • Dramatic door close while Whitley gives Weiss a creepy stare. SO TO EVERYONE WHO WAS SO AGAINST WHITLEY BEING A BAD GUY. I SAY: HAH.
  • Weiss has a serious "monoboob" going on.
  • I smell patricide in Weiss's future.
  • Ruby and Qrow are tied for my top 5 favorite characters behind Mercury, Neo, Torchwick, and Yang.
  • I don't think my brain was able to process all of the badass shit going on in this fight.

    Qrow vs Tyrian
  • Qrow's cocky walk after he punches Tyrian [tup]
  • The way Tyrian uses his tail [tup].
  • Ruby jumping into the fight, I mean, she got Qrow stabbed but still [tup]
  • Qrow throwing his sword behind him so he can land on it. That's pure Cloud Strife right there [tup]
  • Tyrian using his tail to casually block bullets. [tup]
  • Popping the sword into scythe mode to use as a pogo stick. [up]
  • Qhen Qrow did that we saw his aura shimmer around his body - is his Aura made out of Kleenex or something? Is Secret Agent Qrow Branwen, man of mystery and intrigue, actually a Glass Cannon? (We kind of have a theme of more badass women than badass men in this show, and badass men being less badass in general, so this kind of makes sense - Qrow left his warrior tribe apparently to be a family man, and Raven stayed - she's probably the tougher of the two).
  • More importantly, how badass is it that Qrow seemed to have lost his Aura at that exact point and kept on fighting?
  • Tyrian has pincer-shaped blade gauntlets that hide small machineguns!? [tup]
  • Ruby actually playing her role as sniper [tup]
  • And now Qrow's been poisoned. [tdown]
  • TYRIAN'S BLOOD IS PURPLE! BECAUSE SCORPION BLOOD IS PURPLE!
  • So now we've had an arrow through someone's chest, a severed arm, a severed tail, and Tyrian calling Ruby a "bitch." I think RWBY has earned a solid PG-13 rating.
    • Coincidence that Yang's blood is yellow. 'I think not. wild mass guess I think Ozpin did something that..

    Crazy fricking theory about Ozpin
  • I think Ozpin did something to genetically alter the human race on such a deep level that not only has society become ingrained with the concept of expressionism, but everyone has physical traits (blood color) that represent some kind of radioactive side effect that's somehow attracting the Grimm. We see Yang's blood and it's yellow and we think it's just Artistic Liberty. We see Tyrian's blood and it's purple and it's just Artistic Liberty. Blood is still blood. Blood is not purple or yellow for any species. Rainbow blood means something I tells ya! Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, all we need is a third case and giving every character their own unique blood color shouldn't be artistic frivolity.

9/10. One point deducted for Ozpin being a shady motherf'cker.

So saw the episode, it was pretty great. The stuff with Jacques and Whitley was a bit eyerolley but the writers can't help but play some pretty obvious things straight most of the time, apparently. I doubt Qrow's going to die though.

And I do find the notion of "Jacques is worse than Raven!" kind of funny. It seems weird to try and quantify their horribleness, because they're both pretty terrible at this point, but it seems pretty often the thing that pushes peoples buttons like that is "This man hit a woman, clearly he's worse than the people who routinely slaughter villages!".

[up][up]Actually, blood's color is dependent on the oxygen carrying compound in it. Red is just the most common because hemoglobin is more conducive for complex life.

HOWEVER, your theory on the blood is incorrect for the fact that we see red blood in the series. Weiss' face in the White trailer, Jaune's cut, and Yang's wound all have red blood.

Also, scorpions have haemolymph blood, which is blue, not purple.note

[up][up][up] I imagine she doesn't just fight back because doing so will only make the circumstances worse. That and the whole emotional factor. But yeah, practical wise, she'd just make thins worse if she lashed out then.

[up][up] I don't know why they would. It's been consistently built up that this is the sort of narrative Weiss has and you've pointed out with other situations that they play things straight. This one was no different and I never understood why anybody expected anything else of these two. Especially Whitley since he was obvious manipulative villain from his first scene. My rule with RWBY is to never expect anything but them to play it straight. If they subvert expectations, I'm pleasantly surprised and if they don't, I know what I was in for and its consistent with everything else.

I do agree saying he's worse than Raven is foolish. I feel the same in that they're both horrible from what we can tell, just in different contexts.

Also, I'm confused. Why are people talking as if today's episode with Oscar added more weight to maiden theory? (As an aside, my coming rant involves how stupid it was not to show us that fight with Cinder and Oz in full if they're legit going with Ozpin died.)

Oh, and about Ozpin, he seemed to imply what's happening to Oscar, happened to him. So maybe the the "Wizard" position just gets passed on whenever one of their bodies dies (for whatever reason, still unclear if Ozpin could have died naturally) and eventually everything they are gets absorbed into the new guy.

[up]I tend to default to giving things and people the benefit of the doubt even when I shouldn't. And it's somewhat warranted here because RWBY has promise and has become better than I actually expected it to.

And I'm with you on the Spring Maiden thing, this seems like a pretty definitive close on that, and is going in a completely different (but more logical) direction.

Weiss' face in the White trailer, Jaune's cut, and Yang's wound all have red blood.

Then the choice to make it spew out yellow/purple kind of weirds me out. i was being facetious about scorpion blood being purple. I assume they just picked purple because that and green are typical "poison colors" in fiction, but doing that because of Tyrian's color scheme makes more sense.

And I'm with you on the Spring Maiden thing, this seems like a pretty definitive close on that, and is going in a completely different (but more logical) direction.

I mean, I thought it was progressive.

[up]It's literally a stylistic choice. The Yang one was understandable because the entire screen changed colors as well.

Dunno about Tyrian, haven't watched the episode yet.

ideaUnless Tyrian bleeding purple is because his name is a shade of purple and blue (Scorpion blood) and red (mammalian blood) makes purple.
