He has to be a housecat like his wife and daughter are. According to the Wo R video the only way for Blake to be the same Faunus type as her Mom was if her dad was also a cat Faunus. If he was anything else Blake would be a random Faunus.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Housecats and big cats aren't different breeds, but entirely different species. They're not even in the same genus.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Eh. I'm still going to assume housecat until otherwise stated. Though I admit Gira being a Panther would make more sense given his namesake.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Given by the sudden springing out of Sun x Kali, we can be sure she's a Cougar Faunus.
Ghira eludes me. I've seen theories that he's masquerading as a Faunus, but that kind of ploy would likely be noticed on ex-White Fang leader.

Yeah, that would make sense.
Except that panthers aren't an actual species. He'd have to be a leopard/jaguar faunus and have melanism (basically reverse albinism) for that to be the case.

"If I was a tabletop RPG character, my player would be accused of both minmaxing and overdramatic roleplaying." -Me
Beat me to it. "Panther" isn't a thing. The image of a big cat with pure black fur called a panther is actually either a jaguar or a leopard with a particular gene that affects their coloring. There closest thing to "panther" as a taxonomic thing is Panthera, which is a genus that includes several big cats like tigers, lions, jaguars, and leopards. (Fun fact: the defining trait of the Panthera genus is the ability to roar.)
Every time I see Ghira's name, I auto-correct it to "Ghirahim."
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Eh...that's not the only definition of species. There are some animals regarded as different species that can reproduce fertile offspring together. There are just usually other reasons for why they don't, and even that's not universal.
Plants don't even have that barrier a lot of the time.
Though, yes, in this case considering the Faunus a different species does seem pretty arbitrary based more on society than actual genetics. Hey, maybe that's intentional.

Just gonna point this out: RWBY isn't the first fictional series to have different "species" cross-fertile.
Lord of the Rings and ANY fantasy series also has that.
'cause Kali is clearly a house cat, whereas Ghira's most likely a Panthernote . Both felines, which is the same "type" of Faunus.
So.... Like every single fantasy depiction of elves aside from the ones in Pathfinder?
Maybe, but I don't think we were speaking specifically about elves, and more in general.
Anyway, differences don't have to be readily apparent. I've been reading something recently which had (some) demons that appeared human but clarified a major difference that isn't readily visible: they have seven hearts.
It's not clear whether different "type" of fanus means a different species, or general family of animal, but I suspect it's the former. If a tiger fanus and a lion fanus had a kid, I'd been that the child would be "random type" not "either tiger or lion, but we don't know which".
It might be that the randomness is within the general type (ie, a tiger and a lion fanus would have a random feline child, a feline and a canine fanus would have a random mammalian child, etc), but that's pure speculation.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

What kind of feline would he be anyway?
Let's see if you can get past my Beelzemon. Mephiles, WARP SHINKA!
