Never understood why some people assumed the worst about him, he really didn't do anything to warrant it. It's not like doubting Ozpin was a clear sign of villainy.

Well, yeah, kind of. It's a small part, not a clear sign.

  • He's a new character, and part of the "technology-themed kingdom of white coats and scientists who command armies of mechanical drones." 9 times out of 10 science is bad in these kinds of works where almost everything is magitech and fantastical; or at least, in some way, apathetic to the going-ons in the world.
    • (Color is important in RWBY - our main character wears dark colors. Weiss is the one who wears white, and she's mostly antagonistic to Ruby in the beginning, and to Blake later on. She gets better. Torchwick wears mostly white. Neo wears white. Sun, briefly being pursued by Team RWBY, wears a little white - he has a tan. Ozpin wears black. Glynda has a black cape. Come Season 2 and suddenly enters Mr. White. Light Is Not Good here. We have had more characters in darker colors that we trust and like in some capacity next to characters in lighter colors.)
  • Ironwood's entrance into the series is him bringing an army into Vale. We are made to believe that Glynda and Ironwood have some hostility, one-sided it may be. Ozpin greets ironwood as a friend but there's clear disagreement between them about each other's methods. As Ozpin is the show's Big Good, or seemingly is at this point, this naturally creates distrust towards Ironwood. What did everyone think about Professor Snape when Harry distrusted him, even though Snape's worst crime was being a dick to his students? Perspective is important.
    • (Twice in Season 2 Ironwood is portrayed as "the guy who doesn't want to do what he's doing but does it anyway because he feels he has to," a Knight Templar. We've seen him in meetings with Ozpin and Glynda demanding they quell threats immediately with as much force as possible.)
  • At the end of Volume 2 he steals power from Ozpin thanks to the council, and the positioning of Ozpin and Ironwood puts Ironwood in a negative light.
  • Ironwood or at least his organization/country/military had a robot girl built in secret and compete in another country's Olympics. Ironwood at least had some knowledge of Penny and freaked when he had to explain her to Ozpin. We tend to freak over performance enhancers. Ironwood tried to sneak a robot with abilities far beyond any normal human's into the competition.
  • He's a general of Atlas, a kingdom we mostly had negative footnotes and references towards for most of the series. We had no reason to assume his character was detached from the supposed racism towards Faunus from the SDC, which we knew was headquartered in Atlas. Though that does raise a point "just because the company is racist doesn't mean all of Atlas was."
    • We didn't have any reason to assume he was good either, other than him not committing wanton acts of violence.
  • He mixed tea with scotch. The bastard.

I don't know what others thought about him but I was suspicious of him. Heck, I'm still a little suspicious of Team Ozpin's role in all of this. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop and we learn Cinder/Salem's group actually is fighting against The Masquerade, or something. History written by the victors and all that. Not to say they're heroes but it's not as simple as "Ozpin was fighting against Salem the shapeshifting master of darkness!"

It's not clear-cut evidence that should guarantee some villain trope be put on Ironwood's page, but I don't think he deserves Big Good or anything above Lawful Neutral either.

Just like a disturbing amount of people took him disliking Winter as proof of him being up to no good. Because siblings can't dislike each other, apparently.

Which almost funny, because Whitley acknowledged he does have respect for her.

Anyway, I don't expect Whitley to be purely antagonistic or helpful.

I mean, Ironwood has Stubble Of Sorrow, so I'm guessing he feels bad about the whole thing.

We never met Penny's father either.

I think the implication with Penny is that she's either a Replacement Goldfish of her father's, or her father managed to make a Soul Jar for his daughter.

It seems like every new character in this series is assumed evil until proven good by certain segments of the fanbase

He's a new character part of the "technology-themed kingdom of white coats and scientists who command armies of mechanical drones." 9 times out of 10 science is bad, or in some way apathetic, and Light Is Not Good is usually in effect.

Which doesn't say much about the man himself, only what some people expected.

Ironwood's entrance into the series is him bringing an army into Vale, which two trusted characters immediately find suspect.

Harry hated Snape because he was an asshole, and their animosity toward each other continued even after it was blatantly shown Snape was on their side. Ironwood had actually shown himself to be reasonable and explained his feelings to Glynda.

Ironwood's actions at the end of Volume 2 where he's directly assuming power/taking Ozpin's thanks to the council.

Due to the breach, which was partly on Ozpin's decision to send Team RWBY and Oobleck to investigate.

Ironwood or at least his organization commissioned a robot girl be built in secret and compete in another country's national Olympics. Ironwood at least had some knowledge of Penny and freaked when he had to explain her to Ozpin.

Ozpin then proceeded to give zero shits about that and told Ironwood to send in his army. We also don't have the full story about Penny other than she was supposed to save the world.

He's a general of Atlas, a kingdom we mostly had negative footnotes and references towards for most of the series. We had no reason to assume his character was detached from the supposed racism towards Faunus from the SDC, which we knew was headquartered in Atlas. Though that does raise a point "just because the company is racist doesn't mean all of Atlas was." We didn't have any reason to assume he was good either, other than him not committing wanton acts of violence.

How much did we actually know about Atlas by he was introduced? By the end of Volume 2? By the end of Volume 3? Like you said, just because the SDC had problems doesn't mean the entire kingdom did. What's more how do we know Ironwood shared those same beliefs.

I hope this make sense, because it's getting late overhere.

Actually, when Pyrrha completely and utterly destroyed Penny's body in front of millions, we briefly saw some sort of professor looking dude devastated at what happened. He is likely Penny's father/creator.

This guy.

I didn't remember him. Jeez, looking it, it'd be the greatest twist ever if he's not anyway involved in Penny's creation, he just fetches coffee for the ones that are.

Oh, there's no way Penny's story is over. It's not like Pyrrha just getting into the main plot and being clearly killed by the (current) major villain - far too much of Penny was implied yet unknown. She was definitely not some simple Mauve Shirt.

...That being said, it might not be as significant as one could imagine. But it certainly isn't over.

I actually think Sun will be fine with Adam, given that he's Sun Wukong and Adam is a bull. It's the mythological showdown I've been feeling ever since both characters established and so on. Bull Demon King vs. Sun Wukong. The fight is inevitable. Plus you could have Blake and him fight Adam together, which would coincide with her character arc that she's not alone and can rely on those around her.

...I just wanna see the gunchucks in action again. <.< Blake & Sun v. Torchwick is still one of my favorites because of the gunchucks.

As do I, but my genuine feelings are that they shouldn't be catered to. You can't please everybody, so the writers will have to pick their battle there. I hope they stick to what's been developing since season 1 instead of caring about that part of the fanbase because it's consistent with everything in place so far.

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I just thought of something. What if Penny was the first test subject of the Aura Transfer Machine? Would make sense with how she's the only robot to have an Aura.

It would make sense if the test was a transfer between two robot bodies, because I don't think Penny was created by transferring an Aura from an organic being. That would make her statement of being the first artificial being with an Aura kinda void if she was "only" a full-body-prothesis.

I think Penny was the test run of the machine but has her own identity rather than being a copy of the original, which is why Ironwood had no idea what would happen if it's done between two living people.
