Why do I keep expecting this to end with Face–Heel Turn Ruby?

My mind works in weird and stupid ways sometimes.

Episode 6 had some interesting things in it.

     No spoiler tagging
  • Journey length lampshading. Ruby has poor grasp of geography and didn't know what she was getting herself into. Role reversal with Jaune from beginning of show: Huntress geek meets Fish out of Water. It's now the other way around.
  • Unmapped mystery town. So Remnant maps miss things. Still not letting go of that north-east island that appears and disappears from maps. Kingdoms like to forget their mistakes.
  • The Anima journey is like a walk down memory lane for Ren. We're seeing more hints of hidden trauma the further we go. Ren's going to snap at some point.
  • Oniyuri means 'tiger lily', symbolising wealth, pride, protection from evil/harm. Flower-themed, like Ren's name. His parents in charge of the Oniyuri project perhaps? Looks like he's got a wealthy, rebellious, plot relevant family background.
  • One Grimm wiped Oniyuri out? Sounds special, and targeted assassination. Nora looks like she doesn't know this part of Ren's back story. Did Ren go live with her and her parents get wiped out because Ren was a target?

  • Weiss sings. Sounds like a rebellious Take That! to Dad. Dad and Whitley think so, too.
  • Suspicious waiter/guest moment - I've watched too much Alias, My Spider-Sense is tingling.
  • SDC employee issues: looks like all Jacques' staff have crap wages. Mantle conflict brewing.
  • Jacques more aware of surroundings than it appears. Creepy control freak grabbing of Weiss.
  • Giant painting of Beacon in her prime. Feels.
  • Henry Marigold has a Bruce Wayne vibe. Billionnaire playboy by day, heroic vigilante by night.
  • Weiss snaps. Jacques does the arm grab thing again. Besieged, angry, upset over Beacon. Cue Boarbatusk from Port's class. Girl needs to get her summoning under control.
  • Summoned boarbatusk can be taken out the usual way. Ironwood feels the same as Weiss. Two seconds on screen and Ironwood owns the entire episode.
  • Nice Victorian attitude - woman emotional in public = lock her away. Guess Schnee Semblance is not well-known or understood.
  • Jacques doesn't just scowl with his eyes. His entire moustaches scowls, too!
  • Whitley initially has a hand over his mouth when Weiss first kicks off, but he's smiling by the time Jacques reaches her.

  • Spider-Sense is so last season, Ren's got a Scorpion Sense now. I know Pyrrha said Aura does give heightened awareness, but Ren's either unusually talented at it, or it's something else. The gang's clearly used to it by now though.
  • Tyrian's appears to be a scorpion faunus. That's pretty cool. His plait looks like the tail. His eyes turn purple when he's about to sting. His blades look like scorpion pincers. He fights like an acrobat and he thinks Salem is a goddess. He doesn't think much of the White Fang or Cinder.
  • Interesting tone of voice from Ruby when mentioning Cinder's name.
  • Was that focus on Tyrian visibly scratching the handle of Crescent Rose foreshadowing? We've all been expecting Crescent Rose to get broken at some point, will Tyrian eventually be the one to do it?
  • Interest in Jaune...? He seemed to take a close look at Jaune's face, so I'm guessing he recognised Jaune. Watch this space.
  • Qrow to the rescue! I'm guessing he and Tyrian might know each other.

  • Cast list cracks me up: Angry Businessman, Trophy Wife...

I feel like Qrow's Big Damn Heroes moment would have worked slightly better if he they didn't show him rushing beforehand, but it was still pretty cool.

The Weiss segment was the weaker part of the episode, more or less just generic Upper-Class Twit stuff, but Weiss calling them out on that was great.

Tyrian is surprisingly cool when he's not laughing like a maniac.

And we really need an explanation on why he was just tailing them instead of just going along with them.

I'm going with an attempt to keep the kids as low-key as possible. He's a giant target. He's working for Ozpin, he knows the score, Cinder's crew knows that, Salem's probably got better knowledge on Qrow than Cinder does.

Either way, Qrow travelling with the kids is like a giant bulls-eye. Although he might know Cinder saw Ruby's eyes activate, there's a good chance he doesn't and only knew the dragon was up there. As a result, he doesn't necessarily have a reason to think Salem knows Ruby's eyes have activated and that she's therefore a higher priority than the Spring Maiden. Especially since that activation did not automatically make Ruby a higher priority to Salem. Remember, Salem is only targeting Ruby because Cinder requested it, not because that was initially part of her plan (at this point, anyway).

So, Qrow stays in the shadows, the kids go under the radar and he can quietly multi-task between protecting them and searching for Spring.

[up]As for this episode:

He suddenly gets wind of Tyrian, goes 'oh, shit', and races to the rescue. I think the reason we were shown Qrow's clumsy arrival is because his arrival smacked of sheer panic. He didn't expect Tyrian to be there and finding out about it terrified the wits out of him. His reaction when he blocks the tail, is pure relief. I think he and Tyrian know each other and, if they do, Salem's minions will probably be one of the reasons why Qrow's been in hiding - especially if Ozpin's cane is connected to the relic Salem is searching Beacon for; Qrow likely needs to keep that cane hidden for now.

So I haven't been keeping up with RWBY but I'm watching the last month or so worth of stuff. Also finally breaking down and making a (free) Rooster Teeth account so I can watch new episodes a day later instead of a week later. One of the things is asks for when I'm registering is a referral code. What's the deal with that, and does anyone have one they want to give me?

Well, I'm all caught up now, including the most recent episode. Don't have much to say that hasn't been said already, but...

This season is definitely moving pretty slowly. There's been lots of little tidbits of interesting information that we learn, but in terms of actual plot advancement, basically nil. RNJR, Weiss, and Yang are all still where we left them last season (en route to Mistral, doing not-much in Atlas, and hanging out at home with her dad, respectively), while Blake (plus Sun) have gone from "travelling to Menagerie" to "arrived in Menagerie". Yang's finally decided that she's going to do something (but hasn't actually done anything yet), and Ruby is under attack. That's seriously not much, considering we're already six episodes into the season.

Regarding Yang, I found her decision to stop moping around sort of anticlimactic. There didn't seem to be anything to spur it. She just sort of decided "okay, enough of Sad Yang, back to Punching Yang". I guess that's better than a super-cliche "something dramatic happens and she has an epiphany and suddenly she's 100% better again", but I still feel like we didn't really get a good look at her thought process or emotional state. Instead of having a dramatic epiphany, she literally just woke up one morning and decided she was going to move on. Okay, I guess?

Regarding Tyrian going after Ruby, I didn't really think that fight scene was very well done. It seemed like most of RNJR spent most of the fight pretending they didn't exist because they happened to be off-screen. It wasn't a four-on-one fight, it was a series of one-on-one fights with a third person occasionally getting involved. It's like RNJR had a sudden attack of Mook Chivalry. The whole thing very much felt like RNJR suddenly started sucking, not that their enemy was just that good.

The whole thing with Weiss in the most recent episode was pretty cringey. I'm all for calling out people on being assholes, but just yelling at them (and then having some sort of Power Incontinence and nearly killing someone who, though a jerk, was ultimately innocent) isn't the way to do it. If you're going to try Shaming the Mob, then you've got to make a point beyond "all you guys are assholes", otherwise you just come off as self-important and self-righteous.

That's been my problem with Weiss from day one, actually. She is self-righteous and self-important. She always has been. She's gotten slightly better in that she doesn't consider herself superior to her peers that have earned her respect anymore, but the subtext to the entire party scene was "Weiss yells at people for not being as noble-minded and charitable-spirited as she is", which is sort of a laugh given that Weiss wasn't doing anything noble or charitable anyway. Hell, she didn't even want to perform at the event — she had to be basically ordered by her dad. Sadly, I don't really see any of that changing at this point. Weiss has had plenty of opportunity for character development, and none of it's stuck.

The most interesting plotline so far this season is Blake's, and largely because it's at least moving, if slowly. I'm sort of annoyed that they brought up the possibility of a divided White Fang with a radical faction headed by Adam and a moderate faction that disapproves of his extremism... and then immediately shot it down by having the representatives of the supposedly-moderate faction actually be working for Adam. Way to shoot your own interesting twist in the foot, guys.

[up][up]Only if you think it's safe to assume that's a Semblance, which I don't think it is.

[up]I don't think it's that they're working for Adam so much that they an Adam are working for Sienna Khan and Adam's vision is also Khan's vision. If s/he wanted to take care of Adam they probably could but they don't want to.

Not really sure why you'd think that would actually be something they'd do when they already established Salem sending Hazel off to meet with Khan and the White Fang.

the subtext to the entire party scene was "Weiss yells at people for not being as noble-minded and charitable-spirited as she is", which is sort of a laugh given that Weiss wasn't doing anything noble or charitable anyway.

Her rant was started by three separate things: Marigold apparently being completely unaware that the attack on Vale even happened, the blatant self-serving PR move of the whole event (the painting's sign literally said "let's show everyone how charitable we are"), and the drunk lady engaging in some horrific victim blaming. Was yelling at everyone the best way to handle that? Of course not. But no one has ever accused Weiss of being good with her emotions. The summon was an extension of that; she lost control of her emotions, she lost control of her summon.

As for Weiss not doing anything, keep in mind that she was dragged back to Atlas by her father. We don't know precisely what she would have done if that hadn't happened, but my guess is that she'd still be in Vale, either helping the Kingdom or just team RWBY rebuild.

[up][up][up]What else can be? so far we have semblence, dust, maiden power and whatever the hell Ozpin did.

Now about Weiss, she is upset by how disconect Atlas nobility is about...well, pretty much everything and it show as the painter didnt even know what the whole thing was about.

Weiss is a lot of thing: Bossy and controling(something she got for her father) and have a temper(if I have to guess, she got that for her mother) but she is not prone to indulging herself at the expense of others.

BUT I do agree with the complain it feel a little but of the blue and that is because they move on right into Weiss singing and Atlas upper crust, that it. so it feel weird.

[up]I don't know, but just because we don't know what it is doesn't mean it has to be something we already know about. It could be something related to Ozpin, or their tribe, or something else entirely.

Them being able to turn into birds has been presented differently, more mysteriously, than would make sense if it was just a Semblance.

Not really sure why you'd think that would actually be something they'd do when they already established Salem sending Hazel off to meet with Khan and the White Fang.
Because it would be an interesting twist on a group that's theoretically fighting for a good cause (equality for fanus) but so far has actually been just generic "grrr, evil"?

Was yelling at everyone the best way to handle that? Of course not. But no one has ever accused Weiss of being good with her emotions
That's basically my point. She's had three and a half seasons to get better with her emotions. She hasn't. Weiss has changed very little over the course of the series, even though she had some pretty obvious directions to take her character development.

As for Weiss not doing anything, keep in mind that she was dragged back to Atlas by her father.
And she's done nothing since she arrived. She hasn't talked to Ironwood to see if there's anything she can do to help. She hasn't decided to attend Atlas's academy to continue her huntress training. She hasn't tried to convince her family to put the Schnee's considerable personal resources toward any useful projects. Even stuck in Atlas, she has options, but she hasn't pursued any of them.

[up]That's kind of the point though. The White Fang used to be a good group about uplifting and helping the Faunus, but now they're really just about tearing humans down. They've already established this; it's the entire point of Blake's breakdown with them.

And again, it's not throwing something away when it was already clear what was really going on.

[up]It just seen weird if Qrow have something new that nobody else can, as the show already have the silver age, having ANOTHER thing seen already too much.

Now about Tyrian...is a shame monty is not here anymore since it look the kind of chararter he would animate perfectly since is battle mode are a little bit tricky, on the other hand Monty motto of being awsome would clash with this scene that make Tyrian threating.

Also, Im with Jovian: I think those two work for Adam, it seen Khan is missing or a least not in synch with Salem like he is so he send Hazel to "talk to her"

Hasn't it been the reverse? So far all we've seen is Weiss under her father's thumb, and according to Ironwood the academy isn't reopened yet.

[up][up]I don't know why it would be weird; there's still a lot we don't know going on and there's sure to be more to follow. And it doesn't have to just be him and Raven; there's still a lot about their people we don't know.

It also does not help that the trophy wife seemed to be talking like she had actually seen what happened in beacon. She also lacked the sense to stop talking. The guy Weiss kicked out was standing inches from the reason for the charity event but is to dense to realize. Also her growth was in regards to being a better person which means she is going to see the people she probably mingled with in the past for what they truly are.
