Ironwood has cybernetics and Mercury has a prosthetic leg. If her father went the Evil Dead route-straps and buckles- I could see that.

Im surprised Ironwood still have any infuence, I mean he blew the whole thing of Vytal festival, he will be lucky to find anything beyond security guard and yet he still have two seats.

Now about Sun...for what I get, it annoyed not because he was creepy....but douchey as hell as he kept making jokes and flirt in a middle of a fight and Blake was clarly annoyed of him being there in the first place which it turn make him something of a prick, I think the fact a lot of his jokes seen romantic and is Sun, a potencial love interest remind a lot of the typical man mentality of "I was having some fun"

Honestly the only point against Sun is the fact that he decided to follow her in pretty creepy way. With everything else he was just looking to help because he assumed she was going after the white fang. So in turn he decided to watch her back. The whole catch thing was funny since he did the my hero gag and had expected she would do the same. Adam is still a whole lot worse and Sun did clue in on her intent once she made what she was doing clear. He just made reasonable points.

The thing is, even the following makes sense. The ominous cloak and looming over her was fucking stupid but that's obviously the writers milking a couple of minutes worth of suspense out of the obvious reveal.

Even without knowing the real story, Sun was right about Blake trying to go it alone and distance herself from the others. He can't just approach her normally because she wouldn't accept that, and that's really dangerous for her.

I re-watched the episode. There's no sexual contact from Sun - jumping on her head (which she returns), catching her (returning the favour to her), an arm around the shoulders which context makes obviously non-sexual.

Did people miss the fact that she smiled when he caught her? She got annoyed at his dumb joke, not his actions. Sun's a goofy guy, and he doesn't know what she's really dealing with. Well before this it's been pointed out that Blake has a real problem being chill.

Alfric's covered it in more detail and really hit the nail on the head, I just want to point out that Blake's reactions the entire episode completely shred the side trying to call him creepy and compare him to Adam. She does get angry at him, for being present when she's trying to distance herself from everyone (super unhealthy), she gets annoyed at his goofyness (AND he tempers himself when he catches on) but she's smiling at him a lot in the episode. Judging from her initial wide smile and subsequent annoyance at what Sun thought she was trying, she seemed really hopeful that he had understood what happened and followed her because of it. He's just not that bright.

The main issue is that Sun did have a genuine concern for her and two very good reasons for it (the increased threat of the Grimm and correctly guessing the White Fang would pursue Blake), it's just that he is such an optimistic and cheerful guy he assumed she left for more positive reasons and so his goofy attitude reflected that. Even after he realizes Blake's not happy, he's clearly trying to keep things upbeat.

I find it really funny that people accuse Sun of ignoring Blake's position, while ignoring Blake's position. She's clearly not bothered by the contact he made - she makes the exact same contact herself, getting him back for the leapfrog is probably the closest thing to humour Blake has done.

Even leaving behind his teammates was probably the smartest move. Neptune is the most likely to be willing to help, since he's associated with the group, but he's not getting on the boat. And if he took both Sage and Scarlet, that would be a massive dick move to Neptune, because it's potentially dangerous even in the kingdoms right now. The other two don't have as much reason to join him - he'd be basically exposing them to danger for someone they don't have any emotional connection with. Better for those three to stick together if they can't all come.

edit: I think this was a really good episode. The Grimm was awesome, and able to give Blake and Sun a good challenge. The ship's crew were able to be a significant contribution rather than just being red shirts or cowering as the heroes solve everything. Hell, the Grimm was a threat that it would've possibly killed Blake and Sun if they didn't have that back-up, and the ship definitely wouldn't have stood a chance if they didn't have Blake and Sun's help. Yay for threatening Grimm without needing to be bleak about it. Blake and Sun had really good teamwork and we got to see both of them use their clones in new and interesting ways. Blake particularly got to look cool, which is really good given her previous showings. Even simply slicing off the wing looked really cool.

The comedy here was pretty good as well, I liked how Sun reversed the catch on Blake, and Blake reversed the leapfrogging on him. I think the show just needs to learn some subtlety, so they don't have to dial up a character's personality to eleven to make it clear that they're making a joke.

It sucks that pretty much nothing else gets talked about in the episode when these things happens. I'd say this is one of the best episodes, even if that's really not saying much.

  • Excuse me, Blake the paranoid cat. Yeah, doesn't have the same ring.
  • Uhh, why? Why just throw away your ribbon like that?
  • "RIP ribbon. I wanted that ribbon. Goes well with my hood."
  • Du-du.
  • Meanwhile, Yang, Age we don't know Remmant's laws, wondering what's for dinner. PS, what is supposedly so wrong with her costume? It looks casual enough.
  • "Books? Nah, I'd rather watch TV. Easier to manage."
  • Oh hi Zwei.
  • "Dad, did you install the "Multiple News Playing At The Same Time To Make One's Life Miserable" Pack?"

sun was his usual goofy self through the entire episode. I get the feeling Salem was giving cinder an opportunity to come clean. I would definitely believe she knows ozpin is not dead based on the volume 3 ending.

Penny and Roman were both mentioned last page as people we wouldn't mind seeing come back, but I don't really agree with lumping them in the same category. They were both killed off rather abruptly, but the difference is that I think Penny's was done rather well while Roman's wasn't. Actually, let's throw Pyrrha's death in there too, while we're comparing and contrasting. Essentially, it comes down to how their deaths served the plot.

Penny's death drove the plot forward. She had no real narrative loose ends. She established that Atlas is making sapient robots capable of using aura, made friends with Ruby & co, then Mercury tricked Pyrrha into killing her the same way he tricked Yang into kicking him when he was "down". She has no more clear role to play, and her death further drove a wedge between Beacon and the rest of the world, as the villains intended. We might want to see her return because we like her as a person, but narratively speaking her death moved things forward and her absence isn't holding anything back, so overall I think it was a good plotting decision.

Roman's death was more of a lost opportunity than anything else. They'd already written him out of the story by having him thrown in jail, but they deliberately brought him back into play. We've already talked about how one last fight where Ruby is forced to kill him could have been used to drive Ruby's characterization forward, but his death doesn't actually hold anything back as he was already written out anyway. Ultimately, Roman's death was a wash. They could have done something good with it and didn't, but it doesn't cause any problems, either.

Pyrrha's death is my biggest issue. Both she and Jaune were in the middle of some pretty good character development, both independently and with each other. She was struggling with the decision about becoming the fall maiden or remaining a normal huntress, Jaune was working through his slow-and-steady "how to not be terrible" arc with her help, and the two were gradually becoming an unofficial couple in the same way that Nora and Ren are. Then they made all her angsting over maidenness a waste of time by mooting the point and forcing the issue and removing the choice aspect, then had her do a Senseless Sacrifice by kamikazing herself against Cinder despite knowing it was a really bad idea. They made her development pointless, Jaune's development vis-a-vis her pointless, and removed any possibility of the two of them developing further along those lines. (Yeah, Jaune can now develop the "dealing with the loss of my mentor and kinda-girlfriend" thing, but that's a much weaker angle in my opinion.) Which is more interesting: Pyrrha dead and Jaune dealing with that, or Pyrrha dealing with the fallout of failing to take her chance to be the fall maiden, the apparently death of Ozpin, and struggling with whether or not to fill in the rest of the crew and still doing the awkward courtship thing with Jaune on the side?

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

Salem's reference to the relic. That's probably the original plot, the pre-Maidens plot, since Monty came up with the Maidens after Volume 2.

I've been convinced from the beginning that there's something special about Beacon Tower, given everything in the tower acted like a machine (even the table and chair were full of cogs). Ozpin never used his cane during the fight with Cinder - by that, I mean he never touched the lever on his handle. He just used the cane like a sword and I think the cane is a key of some kind.

Besides, all the office scenes? The clock ticked like a heartbeat, not a clock and whenever there was tension in the room, the tick sped up like a stressed heartbeat. When things calmed down, the tick would slow down. It was like it was a reflection of, or connected to, Ozpin's heartbeat... or someone else's.

The question is whether or not Ozpin's cane is the relic or is the key to the relic. The secret Ironwood senses that Ozpin is keeping is probably about the relic not the Maidens.

I hope Zwei got out of Beacon safely.

Zwei is in Episode 3. He's asleep in a dog basket in the living room while Yang is watching television.

Yeah, except by episode 3 everyone has seen the opening credits and knows Blake is on a boat with Sun. The cloak was stupid for several reasons - the opening credits giving it away being one of them.

I get the impression that Sun doesn't really know how to deal with Blake, so he's veering like a pendulum between 'kid around with the lads' (hence things like the shoulder hug) and 'shit, she's a girl not a boy, how do I behave?' (cue the silliness). I've seen plenty of teenage males (and young men in their 20s, for that matter) behave like that around girls. There's a girls-are-aliens trope around here somewhere, isn't there?

Yeah, they probably should have skipped that. Even ignoring Trailers Always Spoil, it was obvious. I think it would have been better if he had just walked up next to her, complaining that the cargo hold is uncomfortable, and then it takes a second for Blake to remember he's not supposed to be there.

I don't think that's "girls are aliens" so much as "Blake is super standoffish and no one really knows how to deal with her." Someone mentioned a few pages back that Sun might think they're dating after they went on a couple not-dates in previous volumes. It's part of the reason I'm looking forward to seeing her parents. Most people might not know how to deal with her, but they definitely will.

I don't know if there's a trope for it, but it's a commonly-discussed trend among feminists. "Women are Unicorns," the attitude where men approach women as though they're some unfathomable eldritch being of mystery who you could study for hundreds of years and still never understand.

Rare, special, unique creatures made of equal parts magic and wonder, that must be approached with extreme caution and/or worshipped.
