At least Taiyang's around. I imagine he's probably pretty strong and could take most anyone who might for whatever reason try to attack the house.

Well, I was going to type a big post up, but Ambar and Tobias covered most of it already. Oh well. On to episode two!

Man, the Schnees are going a bit overboard with the glacial blue/white theme in their mansion, aren't they?

Whitley didn't really strike me as being a jerk, as some people here have said, so much as being distant. He treats Weiss like an acquaintance that he's somewhat fond of, rather than like his sister. That's fairly standard for the sort of noble family that the Schees very much resemble (when the children aren't actively trying to stab each other in the back as potential rivals, that is). Hell, when he mentions to Weiss that their father was arguing with someone in his study, Weiss asks if it was their mother, and he says "no, she's already drinking in the garden" without any real sense of being concerned over the fact that his mother is apparently an alcoholic. The impression I get is that the Schnees are a Big, Screwed-Up Family and that Whitley was basically making a peace offering to Weiss after she'd been away for quite a while, without actually sticking his neck out for her so far that it could get him in trouble.

I can't make heads or tails of Ruby's dream. It was Pyrrha asking "do you believe in destiny?" and then saying "Jaune", which is presumably from their last conversation before the attack on Beacon (when Pyrrha was deciding what to do about the maiden shenanigans). It's hard to say whether there's some sort of supernatural shenanigans going on (as a lot of people in this thread seem to be assuming), or if it's just Ruby dreaming about a lost friend.

Man, that was one sneaky burnt out town. Hiding Behind the Black like that so it could jump out at them for maximum dramatic effect.

I'm not sure what Ironwood's deal is with getting Dust exports from Atlas banned. I suppose he's just looking out for Atlas first and foremost, but that seems rather short-sighted. Other kingdoms could presumably use that Dust to help fight off more grimm attacks. We also haven't actually heard anything suggesting that any of the other kingdoms are of a mind to attack Atlas, but we also haven't been following any characters that would know one way or the other.

Papa Schnee using Weiss for political gain regardless of her own feelings? Yup, Big, Screwed-Up Family confirmed.

Oh hey, Ruby creeping out by accidentally-on-purpose spying on someone. That seems to happen a lot, doesn't it? I'm not really sure what Ruby being there adds to the scene. Couldn't they have just shown Jaune practicing on his own, with a quick pan to show the rest of RNJR sleeping to establish the scene?

[up][up]Exactly, that's what I was pointing out with my "that seems to happen a lot, doesn't it?" snark. It just makes things awkward because what [up] suggests never actually happens. Ruby now knows that Jaune is secretly practicing with the help of a recording of Pyrrha, but if it ever comes up I'll be surprised.

Remember folks...not being upset that a monster like Cinder got hurt? Sociopathic. Bailing on your sister when she's struggling with PTSD and depression? Totally normal, justifiable and heroic behaviour and how dare anybody suggest otherwise.

That is not at all what I said and you know it Ambar. Let me repeat the words and see if you can get that:

You: "If Ruby is horrified by what she did to Cinder then I am going to lose all respect for her"

Me: "Honestly Ambar? That makes you sound like a sociopath. Normal people don't enjoy hurting other people, normal people don't just burn half a person, destroy their eye and then shrug it off and go "oh well, she had it coming so it's alright then." That's the kind of thing people like Light do to justify their actions and not deal with how horrific they are. "

And I stand by that. Yes Cinder is the show's villain. Yes she's responsible for the death of two of Ruby's friends, both right in front of her. Yes she deserves karma for that. But saying that you would lose all respect for Ruby if she showed horror at gouging/burning/slicing/rupturing Cinder's eye, burning or cutting off half her face, damaging her vocal cords and leaving half her body useless, like that she should be perfectly okay with crippling and maiming people, that is the troubling thing.

And "Bailing on your sister when she's struggling with PTSD and depression? Totally normal, justifiable and heroic behaviour and how dare anybody suggest otherwise."? Seriously do you enjoy misrepresenting other people's arguments or do you honestly not get the whole point of what was being discussed? Because there are some people here who are acting like Ruby left home to go to Mistral solely for her own personal enjoyment rather than to save the whole world.

It's not strawmannish when Shaoken literally said that I sound like a sociopath because I don't want the show to waste my time by having Ruby wangst over hurting the resident monster.

Bullshit, you did not say you didn't want the show to waste time on the matter, you said you would lose all respect for Ruby the person if she showed horror at finding out she viciously maimed another human being. And now here you are backpeddling and trying to claim you said something completely different than what you actually said.

And seriously dude? Acting like just because nobody said anything everybody in this thread they must agree that you sound like a sociopath?

As I said in my initial post on the subject of Ruby feeling bad about what she did to Cinder, the issue isn't even whether it would be in or out of character for Ruby to be upset—it's that I, as an audience member, feel it would be a waste of my time.

Bullshit. You did not fucking say you thought it would be a waste of time, you said you would lose all respect for the character.

If Ruby is horrified by what she did to Cinder then I am going to lose all respect for her. Cinder's a complete psycho. She absolutely deserved what she got. Yes, it's human to feel bad about hurting someone, but it's bad writing to have a character wangst over injuring the show's resident monster.

At no point in your post did you say or suggest that you didn't want time to be wasted on it, and now you're trying to say that's what you really meant? Bullshit.

Thank you. I will never understand how some people think it's legit to claim that not expressing sympathy for the as-yet potential pain of a fictional character makes me sound like someone who possesses a crippling, real-life mental disorder whose symptoms include a lack of empathy for real people and criminal behaviour.

Because that wasn't what you said, you said and I will quote again:

"If Ruby is horrified by what she did to Cinder then I am going to lose all respect for her"

The thought of the nicest character who lacks the maliciousness to want to hurt people showing horror at inflicting horrendous injuries on somebody else made you declare you would lose all respect for that character. You didn't say you thought it would be a mistake for Rooster Teeth to devote time to showing that. Had you said that I would have disagreed with what you thought Rooster Teeth should have focused on, but that's not what you said and I'm sick of you turning around and pretending that you were arguing something completely different and then misrepresenting my own discussions which you weren't even here for and turn your strawman version of them against me.

That was the point I was making in my initial post (the one where you said I was strawmanning), and it was made, not to you, but to the guy who said I was a sociopath, compared me to Light Yagami, and then turned around and argued that Ruby doesn't need to show empathy for her teammates onscreen.

I didn't argue that Ruby doesn't need to show empathy, I was saying that my interpretation was that Ruby was keeping all of that bottled up and we'll have a big scene of her breaking and all of it coming out at once. And if you were here for the actual discussion the argument was that people were claiming that Ruby spent 5 minutes with Yang before running off with team JNR for her own personal enjoyment rather than to save the world.

Yes, it's human to feel bad about hurting someone, but it's bad writing to have a character wangst over injuring the show's resident monster.

Above is the full text of my initial comment. My saying that it would be complete waste of my time as a member of the audience is literally the second half of the post. For you to miss that requires you to, well, not read past the first two sentences.

As for the rest...you said I sounded like a sociopath because we disagree about whether something would be a good plot point. That is what you said, and provided you don't go back and edit the post, it's there for everyone to see. And ranting about how you did not say, or how I'm misrepresenting you, that will not change that you said it. Not when, once again, people can go back and read it.

I'm not going to respond to any of the rest of your post. I don't know what happened to you man. Once upon a time I had a lot of respect for you. Now people are sociopaths for disagreeing with you.

The conversation was moving on. How about we let it?

[up][up] If Ruby cries over hurting Cinder it will mean that she doesn't really care about her friends. Cinder killed Pyrrah in front of her. Cinder is also directly responsible for Penny's death. This would make Ruby someone that I could not respect.

Does this make me sound like a sociopath too?

[up] An eye for an eye just makes the whole world go blind. It is Ruby's duty to be the better person. She can defeat Cinder, but she doesn't have to kill her. And she doesn't have to feel nothing for killing her no matter what she might have done. She can feel remorse on the act of killing itself.

While I agree that she rationally should not be unhappy about hurting a murderous terrorist Ruby is quite immature so being unhappy about hurting someone *might* be in-character for her.

Does this make me sound like a sociopath too?
Not in my opinion, you just sound like someone who has a more mature view of violence towards people who really deserve it.

@Sophia Lonesoul

Personally I think you don't sound a sociopath until you're threatening to, you know, kill and skin the people who disagree with you. But hey, what do I know?

@TPPR 10

And leaving the freak who's trying to end the world alive and functional is, of course, a great idea. Look, if Ruby can find a way to bring down Cinder (or anybody else) without killing them, that's fine and great, but the show should not castigate her, or have her castigate herself, for having to use lethal.

Ruby doesn't have to feel good about killing or harming an evil person, but she wouldn't waste her time, or the audience's, feeling bad about it either.

[up][up]The vast majority of comic superheroes, Batman excepted, will use lethal force if necessary. And yes, that includes Superman.

[up]Sure. Is Cinder a tragic villain? Not so far. And just because someone is tragic doesn't mean they can be left alive and/or free.

Comic book superheroes are not a good example of treating villains, throwing super powered psychos in prison who will inevitability break free and kill more people simply because you don't want to kill them is IMO foolish if not immoral.

And once again, most of them don't do that anyway. Superman will kill if necessary (just ask Darkseid, Brainiac, Doomsday, et al). Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Iron Man, Captain America, they will all cross that line if they have to. Batman is really the only one who is obsessed with never killing anybody ever, and his own comics keep subverting the message of that to detrimental effect.

Ruby does not have to be happy that she crippled a woman. But going "oh my god what have I done" seems pretty out there as a reaction. This isn't a war where she's been drafted and is shooting at relatively innocent people on the other side.

Cinder is not an enemy soldier who she had to kill because she had no choice. She is not even a semi-sympathetic villain like Roman who signed up out of fear. She's a goddamn supervillain who, thus far, has reveled in being as evil as possible. Even if one wants to argue that Ruby should feel bad about having to use violence to stop someone, Cinder would be a lousy character to send that message with.
