It's amazing how much better Sno(W)flake's voice sounds when she isn't acting uptight and snooty.

Its possible to have an opinion on whether the plot is structured well or not.

And saying "you must hate [insert show here]" is not doing that. It's a cheap attempt at invalidating someone's opinion by suggesting that since they don't like this show, they must dislike another show with similar elements, and that since the other show is brilliant, their opinion is somehow wrong. It's a really wrongheaded approach to discussion that proves nothing.

Telling Jovian he should stay away from Evangelion or FMA or Madoka because he didn't like how RWBY's plot turned out does not actually address any of his criticisms of the show.

I'll note as an aside that I like RWBY and FMA and loathe NGE and Madoka, so the idea you will like all of these shows or none of them is just silly to start with (and once again, FMA never pretended to not be dark).

[up][up]And making assumption about people and their taste makes you kind of a dick.

[up] What, me? I have no idea where you even got that impression from. Never liked any of them.

It'd be best to just exit stage right from teh series once it stops being enjoyable...

Such is the consequence of having taste.

Or, as put in the world of critics, everybody has different taste, but some are better at explaining why their taste (seemingly) is better. wink

Yeah in terms of taste I share the Nostalgia Critic 's view of the topic. It doesn't matter what you like or dislike, it's about how you back your beliefs up.

That was actually in a VLOG and out of character actually. The character would be far more black and white about the same issue.

and Cinder herself has been rendered a crippled mute by what Ruby's eyes did to her.
Oh lord, I'd actually forgotten about that particular plot device. I'm honestly not sure if that annoys me more or less.

Not for nothing Rooster Teeth did warn members of the audience that the show would be getting darker
My issue isn't the fact that it got darker, my issue is that it did a poor job of doing so. It's one thing to show the heroes being defeated. It's another thing to render them completely and utterly helpless to the point where only a Deus ex Machina can save them. The ending of season three felt very much like the latter. The fact that they killed Pyrrha before her story arc had a chance to go anywhere, and had Yang (who's probably my favorite character) Put on a Bus also didn't strike me as particularly good plotting decisions.

I don't think it's exactly fair to say the characters lost their agency as though that is entirely a bad thing
I disagree. When your characters are no longer able to influence the plot, they're not characters anymore, they're props. The ability to do meaningful things is a pretty basic requirement for a main character, and season three killed that for them. I feel like the show tried to walk the line between "the villains are just that powerful and the heroes had no chance against them" and "the villains were able to win by sucker punching the heroes and in a straight-up fight the villains would have lost" and ended up screwing up both. The villains did have the advantage of launching a surprise attack and they held the initiative the entire time, but it still came down to a series of stand-up fights between heroes and villains, all of which the villains won handily. It leaves one with the impression that the villains have the advantage in terms of both benefiting from a secret (and thus infallible) plan and the fact that they can just beat up the heroes whenever they want, so there's no actual path to victory for the heroes until the author invents one by pulling out a heretofore unseen Deus ex Machina, which is extremely unsatisfying.

Seriously, This Will Be The Day, Red Like Roses Part II, From Shadows, Die, and Time To Say Goodbye - I know they sound awesome but none of those songs are happy.
Soundtrack Dissonance is a thing, you know? "The opening themes were grimdark, you had to know this was coming!" falls flat because a) that doesn't really follow, and b) my problem isn't that things got darker, my problem is that the execution of the shift to a darker story was terrible.

I have a feeling you'd hate Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bokurano, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
The first I actually rather liked, the second I've never even heard of, the third I only watched the first anime and gave up on after Hughes was killed by Envy (you know, when a favorite character was removed from the action by a villain that's both overwhelmingly powerful and operating on a secret plan that the heroes have no knowledge of, and therefore said villain is completely unassailable until a Deus ex Machina makes them vulnerable — a complaint that may sound familiar), and the fourth I've avoided like the plague because everything I've heard about it makes me think I would loathe it.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

[up]Okay one: The Silver Eyes weren't a Deus ex Machina. A Deus ex Machina requires no foreshadowing or hinting prior to it. Ruby's Silver Eyes were foreshadowed, they just took three volumes to kick in, and the situation wasn't hopeless or unsolvable. This has been discussed multiple times.

Two: Yang hasn't been Put on a Bus. She's getting her own arc in Volume 4 because it seems that V4 is going to be bouncing around between each member of Team RWBY to see what they're up to.

Three: They are doing meaningful things. You say that the heroes couldn't beat the villains without a "Deus ex Machina", but Cinder's plan failed aside from her getting the Maiden powers. Destroy Vale? Failed. Kill everyone? Failed. As of right now, the only body count from Cinder's evil plan is two people, and one of them can easily be brought back because she's a gynoid.

Four: Your complaint about FMA has the same massive flaw: That's not a Deus ex Machina. You know what is? Rapunzel's healing tears at the end of Tangled; The Claw in Toy Story 3; Rexie showing up and chomping down the raptors in Jurassic Park; and the railgun in Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen.

I apologize if this seems rude, but people calling something a Deus ex Machina when it isn't really bugs me.

I do think that the Silver Eyes could have been foreshadowed much better instead of relying on one compliment a character got. It is like someone complimented your hair and three seasons later it turns out the character is Samson or something.

When is the episode available to those with RT accounts? I want to do my reaction writing as I watch the episode, so I want to know when it is fine to talk about it.
