So, thread hopping since the last time I was in here, but the end of season three left a really bad taste in my mouth. The RWBY Chibi shorts were varying levels of amusing (some were legitimately funny, others not so much), but now Youtube is throwing actual season four at me. Given that I liked the first couple seasons more than the third one, and really didn't like the direction the series was headed as of the season three finale, should I even bother with season four or am I better off just giving it up as not really my thing?
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.![]()
a third option other than "let the world continue suffering or put it out of its misery".
I doubt Ozpin's "as bad" as Salem, my version had him being villainous in a passive way (refusing to act out of cowardice), but I also have my doubts he's all that good.

That's vague enough to not actually answer my question. Ozpin's morality aside, assuming he has some power to just stop whatever Salem's doing on a whim or has somehow literally trapped the world in a never ending cycle seems way more farfetched than anything else to me.

What did you dislike about it?

That's not what I was suggesting either, and it's not really all that farfetched; we generally agree that he's probably immortal in some way or another. Immortality is something that tends to come at a high price to the individual who attains it and/or to the world around them, and is extremely prone to being Powered by a Forsaken Child, and if the "price" of Ozpin's particular form of immortality happens to be the existence of the creatures of Grimm (at this point, it's as good of a theory as any regarding their origins)...
That wouldn't necessarily mean giving up his immortality would make things better, but I'd imagine it would be part of the process.

Mostly the fact that it took a sudden swerve for the Darker and Edgier while simultaneously removing any hint of the protagonists having any agency (ie, the ability to affect the plot). Watching a group of absurdly badass kids fight monsters and absurdly badass villains was fun, and what's what I liked about early RWBY. Watching everything the protagonists know and love crumble around them while they're helpless to stop it is decidedly un-fun, which annoyed me to no end.

I'm mostly wondering whether it picks up where season three left off (everything's fucked, the villains plans are 100% successful despite the protagonist's best efforts, the A-team has Lost The Team Spirit, and we're into straight-up Only the Author Can Save Them Now territory), or if it pull back from that and presents a more optimistic front where now that the Diabolus ex Machina is over, the protagonists are allowed to succeed again.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. It's not as dark as Vol 3 led us to to believe. Beacon's gone, a few characters died, but the fallout wasn't quite as bad as Salem hoped, Cinder got her karmic punishment after all, and we're back to kids fighting monsters, this time without having to juggle that with school. Contrary to what most thought the kids processed their grief and are mostly back to their old selves, albeit with a slightly new understanding of the world.
RWBY's broken up for now, give it another season or two and they'll be back together.
We're obviously not completely done with the dark stuff but I don't think the tone of the entire volume is going to be like the end of volume 3. Admittedly, only two episodes are out right now so it could go either way, but I doubt it's just going to be Grimdark from here on out.
I think you should have watched Red vs Blue before watching RWBY. It helps you get a feel for how they setup their seasons and how they swerve from irrepressibly goofy to dead serious in an instant. Of course that might not be inherent from watching a single series, but still, Red vs Blue was the dumbest, most juvenile form of Let's You and Him Fight, slapstick, and Toilet Humor you could find, and then it wasn't.
There used to be complaints about the Cerebus Syndrome for that show too but I don't imagine anyone really cares at this point.I think if you'd watched the former before the latter you'd be far less perturbed by what you're seeing now. Or maybe you're just not used to "dramedy."
Not for nothing Rooster Teeth did warn members of the audience that the show would be getting darker, and while I don't know if you were there for that, I don't think it's exactly fair to say the characters lost their agency as though that is entirely a bad thing. Plenty of dramas involve characters being put into helpless situations to evoke sympathy and tension. It's not so much losing their agency as it is the stakes are being raised and the characters, as was foreshadowed by several of the song lyrics in the beginning of each season, are woefully unprepared for what's about to happen.
Seriously, This Will Be The Day, Red Like Roses Part II, From Shadows, Die, and Time To Say Goodbye - I know they sound awesome but none of those songs are happy. We were all waiting awhile for the show to finally get darker like the lyrics described, so it's amusing, and a little perplexing to see others upset by how dark it's getting (arguably; not a lot). Opinion Myopia I guess.
Anyway.
I have a feeling you'd hate Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bokurano, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Guys, let's not tell Jovian what he would and would not like. Especially since "you must hate X" is usually a thinly veiled attack, a statement that "you don't like these kinds of shows, but this show is one of those and is brilliant, so therefore your opinion is invalid".
Also ''FMA"' was pretty damn dark to start with.
Its not an attack on jovian as a person, its a disagreement with his opinion using examples.
Watch SymphogearProtagonist ought start off helpless...though not completely hopeless.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. Finally got around to watching the first episode.
- Ooh, so that's where Grimms come from. Nice, finally getting to see their origin. I mean, sure, we don't know exactly what those pools are, but at the moment that's all the explanations I need.
- Generic evil meeting is generic.
- It feels great seeing Cinder crippled, or however she's supposed to be described as. It was about time she was knocked down a peg or two. Or several.
- Aww, so Ozpin is dead, presumed or for real. Pity.
- Tyrian feels so much like Junkrat from Overwatch. Then again, cackling violent maniacs are very common archetypes anyway.
- You probably have a name, but you are Freckles now.
- Oh God, am I finally going to get to see an actual, named character who appears for more than a minute or two?
- Fuck you Jaune, RNJR is the coolest goddamn name there is (AND it's color themed).
- Something about Ren's outfit feels off.
- Hey, Ruby is showing a bit more skin now.
- I'm guessing that counts as Rocket Jump?
- Oh God, I just can't stand the animation. It will take some time getting used to for me.
- Yeah Ruby. Jaune's hoodies has a bunny on it. And? No seriously, what about it?
- Aww, what a sweet gesture from Jaune.
- Oh, so he didn't get a weapon upgrade yet. So he's still going to be stuck playing Dark Souls (and not particularly well, at that) while everyone is playing Devil May Cry.
- So the Grimm outbreak resulted in the damage to communications and transportations infrastructure. Yikes.
- [ Insert (Not really) Obligatory mention of Weiss' breasts.]
- The opening. While I'm not too fond of the song - the first opening is the only one I actually like - I do love the visual. So Blake has a sister or something?
All around, not bad. Could've been better, but I'm not complaining too much.
Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.![]()
People are generally of the opinion that's her parents, considering the big guy shooing off Sun.
Um, Yes, you can.
Its possible to have an opinion on whether the plot is structured well or not.
Watch Symphogear

There's obviously a lot we still don't know, so we can't say anything with 100% certainty, but "Ozpin's really as bad a Salem" is not something I see in the cards.
