Both of those are rather new shows of similar genre to RWBY, which is why I chose them as examples.

In addition, those works you listed generally had that extra world-building occur during large breaks between the works and are hardly needed to get an understanding of the works.

Neither are these. This is supplemental worldbuilding. Things that are important to the narrative do come up in the narrative. These bits are just optional exposition to flesh out the setting.

For instance, the World of Remnant episode on the Four Maidens tells the actual faerie tale which is fun and awesome, but you can just listen to Pyrrha's quick summary in Ozpin's office and understand what's happening just fine.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

[up]The Maiden one is interesting to me because of how pointless it was. It didn't tell us anything new that the narrative hadn't already told us. There's also all of the early ones, which you could put in a memo under 'Shit We Already Know'.

I agree with Kevin

I still haven't watch any Wo R videos and just going by what I hear in this thread I haven't missed anything important. I would certainly prefer it if they could mix in all the world building into the story proper, but if they feel that doing separate expository videos is the best way to get out this information without info dumping in the show, I don't mind.

[up][up] Eh.Its told us the story in greater detail. Not immediately useful.but still good to know. There are people how care about that sort of thing (cough *RWBY wiki* cough).

Small point. Some of their narrative choices do make it more difficult for exposition .Anything on Dust and Aura for example would be difficult to do without it coming across as *shit you should already be familiar with*.

I've watched the Vale WoR. I don't have access to the Mistral one, although I can see people have already troped its content. It seems there's hardly any point to there being a sponsor-only release when sponsors then go and make the content accessible to everyone else before it's available for public viewing. Almost seems disrespectful to the creators, but there you go.

I sort of like Qrow's narration. It certainly beds in the idea that he's Ozpin's 'heir'. It does, however, make me want Winter to narrate Atlas rather than Qrow, although I can see a benefit from us getting Qrow's perspective before we get an Atlesian's perspective.

I couldn't quite work out what the name of Vale's continent was. It sounded a bit Sanas or Saunos or something. Does anyone know?

I also noticed there have been towns/villages on the unnamed dragon continent. All of those towns/villages were 'wiped out' while towns/villages remained on the other continents.

I think Salem's base is either on the dragon continent or the island to the north-east. While the dragon continent is compelling, the north-east island stands out to be purely because of the anime inspiration behind the show.

In manga/anime, the north-east is traditionally the direction of evil. It's where the heroes travel to find the evil, and it's the direction from which evil comes. The north-east is the ox-tiger, the demon-gate. It's where the shrines need to be to defend against it.

Wherever Salem is, I did notice she is surrounded by dust crystals of an unusual colour.

It was in the middle of being destroyed, true, but the way it looked implied it was there for some time already.

I assumed, given what Qrow was saying, that it was Mountain Glenn.

I like how Qrow implied that aquatic Grimm might be a thing.

I've been expecting... hoping... for acquatic Grimm from the beginning. That's why I liked Ruby's surfing moment down the table on the food tray. She and her sister live on an island, so they might be surfers. I was expecting (hoping) for a cross country trip of some description from the beginning, it was just a question of when, and that crossing open water would be involved (if for no other reason than it allows us to see the rest of the world - not just other kingdoms but the wilds, too). I was therefore happy to see Team RNJR set off at the end of Volume 3.

Knowing Ruby, she might have learned to surf just to get a better shot at aquatic Grimm. She did want to bag herself a Goliath, so she does have something of a 'game-hunter' mentality to her desire to kill Grimm. For all that she wants to help people, that Goliath moment made it seem that she gets a kick out of killing Grimm for its own sake - it's not just about helping people for her. She has that gleefulness on her face at the end of the Volume 4 character short, too.

I still haven't watch any Wo R videos and just going by what I hear in this thread I haven't missed anything important.

If you watch just one, watch the one that tells the full fairy tale of the four Maidens. Not for the information but simply to listen to Shannon McCormick's narration. It's so funny to hear Shannon playing an Ozpin who's trying to put on the voices of the old wizard and the four girls. It's obvious Shannon has a whale of a time doing it, and he has since said in interviews it was his favourite WoR.

It's The Princess Bride vibe. You could see him being the one reading the bed time stories.

What was most interesting to me about that segment was that the Faunas apparently have some land to themselves that's separate from the Four Kingdoms.

We've known about Menagerie since Volume 1. It's basically Australia: founded by people sent there for committing a crime. Though this crime was "being a faunus".

RE: Continent name: Man, I hope it's Sonas. Because that's an Irish word meaning "happiness". And most of the story seems to be leaving it.

RE: World of Remnants: The only one that gives needed information would be the CCT one, which explains that the CCT is one of four towers in a network, and it's destruction would shut down the whole network.

You can infer it's purpose from Weiss' visit in Volume 2, and figure out it's the only way to do inter-kingdom communication. But the WOR on the CCT is the only place you find out that the fall of the one in Beacon not only cuts off Vale from the rest of the Kingdoms, but cuts off the other Kingdoms from each other.

There's nothing wrong with supplemental worldbuilding. It's only an infodump if it's clumsily inserted into the main show.

The way they end these WOR's always puts a smile on my face. Ominous even when they're not trying to be.

Also, drunk!Qrow. The implication of Qrow being this world-weary adventurer whose gone to shady towns like these and knows what's up is interesting.

So I wonder if this means Team Goody-Two-Shoes is going to get swindled sometime this Volume. And if Torchwick's on vacation and Neo's raising a family of vicious Nevermore to lead an attack on Vale, who will the villains be this volume? Will Cinder and her posse just happen to be in Mistral, or are we focusing on Adam since the White Fang are supposedly based in Mistral? Or is this a new town with a new crime boss?

I'm gettin pumped.

Mistral's got an East Asia vibe, it seems.

Cinder's from Mistral, or so she claims. I wonder if she's from the upper or lower class. Or if that respect for nature has an influence on her actions.

Also if she is from Mistral that explain why she recruit Román,Emerald and Mercury, she know the underworld better than anyone so she know who to turn in order to get what she wants

RE: Continent name: Man, I hope it's Sonas. Because that's an Irish word meaning "happiness". And most of the story seems to be leaving it.

I was thinking the same thing. tongue

RE: World of Remnants: The only one that gives needed information would be the CCT one, which explains that the CCT is one of four towers in a network, and it's destruction would shut down the whole network.

Also, that it replaced radio and local communications, which means that the loss of a tower leaves people stuck with only local communication at best. I noticed in the Volume 4 short that Ruby's scroll states the signal is 'local area only'.

Another interesting titbit to come out of the WoR is that Dust only works within a certain distance of the planet which is why space flight isn't possible and why Remnant does not have satellites - Dust stops working after several miles from the planet's surface... and the people of Remnant don't seem to understand why.

Oh, and there was that one segment that finished the piece by strongly implying that there's something 'more than human' about Ozpin's Aura.

It's only an infodump if it's clumsily inserted into the main show.

It'll always be infodumping, it's just the difference between good and bad infodumping. Oobleck's history lesson and the Risk-esque game were examples of decent infodumping. Oobleck's talk in the middle of the Mountain Glenn hole Ruby had fallen down was a not-so-good example.

Cinder's from Mistral, or so she claims. I wonder if she's from the upper or lower class. Or if that respect for nature has an influence on her actions.

She's Cinderella. At the very least, she'll be a disinherited aristocrat. At the absolute worst (and as per the villainous Cinderella folklore), she'll be a disinherited aristocrat who reclaimed her inheritance and went evil on the power it gave her. Given that her back story indicates she wanted power and strength, my guess is that she was disinherited and had no means of regaining her birthright, and Salem became the fairy godmother that will 'help' her obtain what's 'rightfully' hers.
