I love how what I said about the dance just being one of the many symptoms of Monty's Rule of Cool mindset has been ignored to discuss the subjectivity of it. -.- At any rate, even if you have no problem with that scene, it's one of the many examples of Monty preferring to just do what he finds fun without much thought or care about the cohesion of anything else. Which is why I don't trust him as a plotter to say that he wouldn't keep doing it with all the proceeding volumes.
Improving as an author, one video at a time.EDIT: Holy crap where am I? I was responding to a post on the last page -_-
Some of those fights were allegedly already partially worked on by Monty, and at least a few of them by Shane though, so I guess I'll see how they look in Volume 4.
Monty's stuff was more stylish. There's a lot of little moments you could pick out of his fight scenes:
Ruby's cocky expression when she caught the Beowulf in the Red Trailer, and the slow turn of the camera when she cut in half. The way the rose petals exploded off her every shot when she fired Crescent Rose. That part was two minutes in when she spins and lays down on Crescent Rose, fires the gun with her feet, backflips into another Beowulf, and then does this sort of "marching band twirl" where she pulls her knee up and starts spinning Crescent Rose around.
White trailer was kind of meh on the action, and Weiss still basically fights like that on the show, but with less stamina apparently. Her fighting style is always elegant and neat, so you'd really have to screw up to make it look boring.
Adam's quick sword slice in the Black Trailer slice when they broke into the train car; launching
his sword from its sheath to hit one of the androids
. These moves looked like they'd come right out of a video game - matter of fact IIRC Adam and Weiss borrow some moves from Devil May Cry. Look at the way the camera spins around them while they fight. The camerawork's so masterful you almost don't notice how much of an abusive prick Adam is.
And then the Yellow trailer The way the disco floor rolled out like a wave when Yang punched it. Yang's Shoryuken on the first guy she knocked out.And this
was probably the most beautifully done fight sequence in RWBY before Neo showed up. Yang and Miltia's
footwork always made me stop and rewind.
I haven't really picked out as many little moments like that in Volume 3. With the exception of Mercury breakdancing, landing on Coco's back, and Penny, doing her pop and lock dance while controlling her swords.

All of that to say Monty's fight scenes were different but I don't think Volume 3 was a disservice to it. I do miss it, but Monty's absence is more noticeable on Red vs Blue where the fights went from being crazy Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon spectacles to the kind of fights you saw in Captain America The Winter Soldier.
With stuff like Ruby splitting into three and making use of her Semblance now things should be interesting. I wonder who the lead animator is now.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I've already talked in here before about how Monty was an amazing animator but a shit writer. Way too often he would do something "cool" that came at the expense of the plot. I think I've ranted enough in the past on how the end of Volume 1, where Penny went friggin' OP on everyone, was the epitome of Monty's poor writing skills.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell? That Penny example bothers me on so many levels, especially since I feel the wiser move would have been to have Weiss show up as a Big Damn Hero and dramatize her putting Blake first as a friend as opposed to just having them meet up as an afterthought to the event itself. It would interweave the climatic external actions with the internal character arc.
Improving as an author, one video at a time.I can agree that Volume 2's finale was horribad. Made me swear off the show for the longest time.
Not to mention the fact that it never felt like there was that much of a threat to begin with. Team CFVY showing up felt like pure overkill.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! Most Grimm were ultimately going to be fodder anyway. The Coco scene felt a little weird but I don't remember her "soloing all the Grimm", but it's been awhile since I've watched it. I don't really care about Sun and Neptune. I don't really care about cute animal sidekicks.

Regarding the dance number
...eh. I liked it.
...what? I can't have long-written essays on why everything sucks.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

The Team JNPR dance is one of the best things in Volume 2 and anyone who says otherwise is just wrong.
