I think Yang mentioned at one point then when she was in her funk after she found out about Raven back then she told Ruby, implying it was a pretty nasty conversation and involved something along the lines of her telling Ruby they weren't really total sister and Summer wasn't her mother.
Plus they have different last names, with Ruby seeming to take on her mothers of her own will. So I'm pretty sure she knows. What she probably doesn't know is that Yang is still looking for her. She probably thinks either Raven is dead, or Yang buried that part of her.

That's an entire separate, and far more important, issue.
I don't recall that kind of conversation ever being said to have happened (or implied to have happened). She did say that her father shut down after Summer's death and that's when she learned the truth (which is why I think it was Qrow who told her, not Taiyang). She says that one day she thought she had a clue about her mother and, when the house was empty, bundled Ruby into a cart and took off through the forest, only for it to be a dead end and them have to be saved by Qrow. There was nothing about Yang having any kind of conversation with Ruby about it - Yang doesn't even know whether Ruby remembers anything meaningful from back then.
I don't really see the different surnames as being unusual. In a world where individuality is so prized it's a morality tale about the evils of global war and kids get named after colour concepts just to ram that point home, I would think that the choice of what surname to take would also be individualistic. I would also think that what name to take when married would also be individual choice (whether that's retain maiden name, female takes male name or male takes female name, or both combine their names into a new one, etc.).

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Yeah based on how Yang told the story I would think she either just put ruby in the wagon and went forth with Ruby not having a clue or Yang lied about what she and Ruby were doing probably with the idea of going on an adventure.
"Shall I use you, or make you mine... I'm not so sure what I'll do." - DorthyDidn't Yang say something about Taiyang being a mess after Summer died or has the fanon leaked into my memory?
Another possibility is Yang just snuck away with Ruby so they could find their "real mother." Maybe it was just an act of rebellion. Yang was genuinely convinced she and Ruby needed to go off on their own find their real mom no matter the cost.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I'm guessing Yang is seven at best when that happened, or six about to turn seven. Ruby was probably four. If dad was as much a mess as Yang said, then he probably dipped out for some reason or another for a bit and told Yang to watch Ruby while he went to get groceries or something.
Yang has two missions; Go find her mom based on what she saw in the picture, and keep an eye on Ruby. With the logic of a little kid, she figured combing the two by taking Ruby along with her was as good an ideas as any.
"He could be one of the middle kids"
Maybe, I mean he have a lot to prove which is a trait many younger kid have(I know, Im the younger of four) but he is look protective of Ruby and Phyrra
". I think it was Qrow who told Yang - without Taiyang's permission."
It could be, Qrow suffer what I call "Dr.House complex" he "speak the truth" and that give him permision to be a total asshole against.....everyone really, he provke Winter, he dosent have any trouble saying Ironwood plan is bullshit and even call Yang "Crazy", the only time he hold his tounge is with Ruby, as he paciently explain to him the legend of silver eyes warrior, he sorta hide the truth of her too.
"Qrow and Taiyang's issue is the fact that Qrow is pissed that Taiyang didn't sleep with him"
Raven and Qrow want to have Taiyang for themselves, but Summer came and convince him to live a life of monogamy, until this day both Qrow and Raven blame each other for it
Also, I not much Ruby dosent know, is more that Ruby dosent ASK, she is very naive at things and so far she just asumed is not big deal, after all Yang never show(to her) any concern about Raven, so WHY it should be one in first place?
Is hard to said consider that Ruby have show very little hidden depth so far, I mean "Red like roses II" show she feel bad for Summer but so far is off screen Ruby, where all things go to die
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"It's an easy stock position it is...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. So I'm not the only one who wondered this. That's good to know.
As for why Yang wouldn't tell Ruby — logically, it doesn't make much since, but I think it does emotionally. Yang didn't want to admit to Ruby that they were only half sisters, and so kept letting the secret slide. Like, "I was totally going to tell you, I was just waiting for the right time."
Of course, it's also possible that Ruby does know and it's a touchy subject, so Yang avoids talking about it.
Or maybe Ruby knows and couldn't care less, but where's the drama in that?

Volume 1 we got four visually distinct trailers and solo pieces. Like Volume 2 we got a preview of the mech fight and a trailer and WOR. Vol 3 we got concept art of Winter and Adam. Vol 4 we got a leaked trailer, Weiss art, and...
Come on Rooster Teeth make with the goods.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!

I actually got the impression that Ruby does not know that she and Yang have different mothers (or - more importantly (and, to my mind, more interestingly) - the family thinks Ruby doesn't know).
I also think that it wasn't Taiyang who told Yang the truth about her mother. I think it was Qrow who told Yang - without Taiyang's permission. I know the creators have said that there's history between Qrow and Taiyang, bad blood of some sort that the final episode of Volume 3 shows a hint of, and I know the fandom's first assumption is that it must be because Qrow was in love with Summer. I sincerely hope that isn't the reason because it's just so damn cheesy.
I'm hoping it's because Qrow told Yang the truth about Raven being her mother, and (if Taiyang even knows the event occurred) is therefore viewed by Taiyang as the reason Yang and Ruby almost died in that forest back then. It would also explain Taiyang's warning expression when Qrow asked him to leave Ruby's room so that Qrow could talk to Ruby privately - because he'd know that Qrow has a history of revealing things to the girls that gets them nearly killed, and lo! and behold, it happens again (this time with Ruby - a few words from Qrow, and Ruby's sneaking off to Mistral; Taiyang must be having kittens, especially if he knows what Yang did all those years ago).
