I hadn't considered this until you mentioned it but that does make a lot of sense. Nobody outside the bad guys has any real stake in the tournament, except maybe Flint for more personal reasons. For everyone else it's just a way to show off and look cool on TV. If these had been real battles against Grimm many of them wouldn't have done the things they did. But they weren't so they took the time to do otherwise dumb things because why not?
Yeah, I took that from the tournament as well. No one was taking it suuper seriously aside from the villains.
On Sage and Scarlet: I have to agree, but honestly.... We've seen Sun fight in a legit battle before in the previous volumes, and he's pretty good. If we assume the rest of his team is like that, it means Sage and Scarlet are good, they just got jobbed in that fight.
Also: At least Scarlet had lines

I more just registered what happened to Scarlet as terrible luck since overall he seemed pretty decent in the fight. Sage just looked like he got a bad match up.
For jaunce it probably would have been more believable if the information dump had not happened or if he showed some sign of knowing before it happened. Considering the ace of the team seemed confused to a certain extent it does seem to give the idea that their leader did not go over the plan enough with the rest of them.

"Shall I use you, or make you mine... I'm not so sure what I'll do." - DorthyGotta say, given the way Qrow kept lampshading how bad the kids' fights actually were, and then we waltz straight into a much more serious and high-level fight between Qrow and Winter (two fully trained hunters), and the very clear difference in how Mercury/Emerald fight compared to any of the kids, I've always viewed it as deliberate.
The tournament is supposed to be fun and honourable, a good-natured competition that brings people together in a good way. Qrow, Mercury and Emerald are not here for the same reason as the kids, they're not there to fight like kids, and they've got much higher stakes on the line than the kids.
It's a very good contrast between childhood and adulthood, trainee wanabes and the real thing, and - perhaps, most importantly of all - innocence and worldliness.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Deliberately shit is still shit
Don't spend multiple episodes on something that is intended to be bad
Also, Scarlett getting taking out by the coconuts is ridiculous, yes, apparently that's due to a running joke about his VA and groin shots.
Which just comes back to the problem of the attempts at humour fucking everything else up. Preserving a companies' in-joke is more important than the series they are working on.
There will be a better balance of humor and serious...yes. To make for better 4 v 4 fights.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. That makes two people on here that I know of who have avvies from hentai.

Funny story — a while back, in the RWBY subreddit, someone posted a Sage x Yang (I think) fanart and some dudes started going off in the comments about how cringy and pathetic it is to make shipping fanart of your OCs with existing characters. That's how memorable Sage is.
Eh, loads of shows use in-jokes. They're always stupid. Rooster Teeth isn't the first and sadly won't be the last. I just ignore it.
My point is that it's obvious the kids aren't intended to be good. Now, whether or not the creators are good or bad at portraying bad is a separate discussion. I don't think they did a particularly good job of portraying bad either, but it wasn't the point I was making at the time.

In-jokes aren't always stupid...unless the joke itself isn't funny to begin with. Then perhaps it is.
I mean, it needs repeating that the animation maker for RWBY was horribly out-of-date, it's just that Monty was really, really fucking good at using it to its full capacity. With Monty dead, they still tried to use it for Season 3, but no one was as skilled as Monty was at using the thing, because of how hard it was to actually use it; ironically Monty found it easier to use that than any other one that would have been so much better, because he was a wizard at what he was still using. Them moving over to a more up-to-date animator is only going to make the animation better, since they'll have an easier time using it.
Let's see if you can get past my Beelzemon. Mephiles, WARP SHINKA!

I always thought it was the point. That they were just a bunch of kids having fun and not taking it too seriously, to be immediately contrasted by Mercury and Emerald's brutally efficient and joke free takedown of Coco and Yatsuhashi.
Plus Qrow says the fights were disgraceful from a professionals point of view.
Basically just forshadowing that they were gonna get crushed by Cinder's more efficient and serious forces later in the volume.
