Don't worry, it was a Boss Battle. It can be somewhat threatening.

Until someone in a later volume casually one-shots it.
Though, since it is a gorilla, I'm expecting a much larger version further down the line.
I mean, it put up a fight and actually hit Ruby more than a couple of times.
We still have to have someone fight a Goliath, too. Plus, given that the general Grimm in that village seemed both bigger and smarter - like the one throwing bricks - I expect that Deathstalkers and the like might become more threatening again.

Was the trailer animated using maya? It looks really smooth and a little more detailed. I read that they'd switched to using maya for the series proper, but I don't know about the trailer. It looks great and I'm really excited.
The internet is a waste of time, and that's exactly what's right about it-William GibsonMonty always favored Rule of Cool over story. This was fine as the initial draw of the series, but as the plot got more important and RWBY became less of a Dancing Bear, it became a detriment.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Now I'm not sure if this is better in the RWBY Fanfiction thread, but I've been wondering:
Are Semblances wholly unique, or can people have similar ones?
I'm thinking the latter, as both Neo and Emerald have Illusion Semblances, but not exactly the same thing.
Reason why I'm asking is I was thinking of making a character with Super-Speed, but in a more traditional than what Ruby's shown. IE: The Flash and Quicksilver style of Super-Speed.
AFAIK, her semblance only seems to allow her to move in short, but powerful, bursts. While there doesn't appear to have a specified limit as to how many times she can do it, but it's not like she runs so fast that in her eyes the world moves slower than her.
In fact, with the bit of that Justice League film teaser, it's obvious that Required Secondary Powers are in play. Just being fast won't do much good if you cant react as equally fast. It really shows when you have Quicksilver and Flash have that sort of thing, whereas Ruby does not.
If you're speaking OC-wise, then you should probably go to the fanfiction thread for that.
EDIT: As for the other semblances, the Schnee family seem to have theirs as hereditary. It's not always the case, but it makes them easily distinguishable. Emerald's more about the mind games than actual illusions, but she has to have her eyes on the target in order for it to work. Neo can disguise herself and create mirror images.

Unless semblances get ultra-specific and we have to assume that it just so happens that our protags happened to get some of the most basic ones when their ancestors didn't.. yeah, i think it's safe to assume that people can have the same semblance.
Plus the fact that we know Semblances can be inherited- even if it's the exception and not the rule.

"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeNot in-universe - nice as it would be to think everyone is an individual snowflake, college professors do get bored reading the same types of papers after awhile. I think that applies here, not everybody on Remnant has some unique Semblance all their own. But I would say, out of universe, they're supposed to be.
There is some similarity in the Schnees obviously, but we don't care about any of them except for Weiss, Winter, and Papa Schnee. For the story's purposes, Weiss's Semblance says something unique about her, and so does her inability to master it the way Winter apparently has.
For your problem with writing an OC, I think that's the right way to approach it, just make it visually or functionally different. I've ranted about what I think each Semblance means for each character in regards to how they're characterized and how they've developed - Monty might have just wanted to make them all have cool powers, but subconsciously I think he made an effort about making sure not only that they were distinct, but they said something about the character, and he succeeded there. You can have a character who has a power like Ruby's, but you're saying something about that character through whatever Semblance you assign them.
So if you're looking for reinforcing evidence that they are wholly unique, I'd say the answer is yes and no. If you're really worried about making it different, look at the way Ruby's is illustrated. She turns into a giant, rippling fireball, or she disappears in a dust of rose petals - for no immediately apparent reason, but it symbolizes her. That's her teleport. Neo's is a pink flash of light. Raven uses her sword. Cinder yells "Flame on!"
So maybe your OC should leave daffodils, or maybe scorch marks, or maybe an afterimage instead. Or, Quicksilver, as you suggested. Or do the Naruto thing and leave a log with a smiley face on it.

To be honest, if a character with Super-Speed doesn't have the Required Secondary Powers (Super-Reflexes and the other stuff) I question the creator's intent. And I didn't ask in the fanfiction thread because it wasn't solely about an OC, but a general thing. Cause I was curious about if every single Semblance (barring the Schnee Family's) is entirely unique.
But you've got a fair point of Ruby's being more "burst of speed" instead of actual Super-Speed.
Visually that'd be hard to translate as when I say Super-Speed I mean "people mistake it for teleporting". Though from his POV it's all of the Bullet Time shenanigans (think Quicksilver's POV scenes in the new X-Men movies). And I was saying Quicksilver as in the character, not the metal.
I meant Quicksilver the character.
I also mean, if you were describing Ruby's teleport, you'd mention mysterious rose petals. This guy would just be there one moment then blink out of existence, like Quicksilver. If it were The Flash, there'd be electricity. Scorpion would disappear into fire.
I mean it'll be hard sure, but that's the joy of hobby writing.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!
... Eh? Is this in response to the Required Secondary Powers thing or?

Monty used to personally animate everything. Now he can't.
There's really nothing they can do about that. That might be why they've started to focus on powers and cheap shots over Monty's dance like physical blow for blow fights. They just can't do it without him.
