It probably didn't take the whole 8 months...that's just how much time has passed in general.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Well then I need some 4koma's about what they were doing for those 8 months.
From what this thread says
, Miles said "less than a year, more than half a year," 6-8 months since they set off from Patch. Imagine the battles waged and the experience gained within 6-8 months.
It also occurs to me that they did this solely to have a time gap they could fill in with DLC, or a sequel to Grimm Eclipse. The game itself takes place between Volumes 2 and 3.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Going to the edge of the Earth...and flying to their next destination.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Got no problem with them taking 6-8 months to travel on old Shanks' pony.
We don't know what transport is like in Vale right now, given the situation, but the gang left furtively, and started their journey outside the kingdom. We have no idea what transport even exists outside the kingdoms or how well defended those transport areas would be (we do know the satellites outside the kingdoms have to be protected from the Grimm, as do the railway lines).
This is Remnant, not real life. The creators of that world think it makes more sense for the kids to hoof instead of going to find an airport or railway station, we're going to need to know as much as them to know if that's stupid or not.
I am wondering what transport was used to get from Patch to the mainland, however.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.![]()
Or...they only hoofed it until they found suitable transportation. We only see the start of the lone Ranjers' journey.
I'm sure there'll be a flashback to show us how they got there...typical anime stuff.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. That's what I expect, that's typical Rooster Teeth.
Skipping this far ahead just isn't a good idea if all they're going to say is, "they hoofed it, it was long, nothing happened, end of story." All that tells me is they wanted to get Ruby legal age in some province and to give Jaune facial hair.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!There's a couple things to expect.
First is that they get there, then they make some new friends/allies, kill some people, Rwby will get a new robot girlfriend...etc. and they that's when Season book 4 starts.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I'm certainly expecting them to need transport to cross the ocean.
But, seriously, I'm expecting them to be acting almost as 'hitch-hikers'. They'll hoof it where they have to and get other transport where they can manage it. At least they can offer protection services to non-huntsman travellers throughout Remnant, if they have to.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.THAT... is a fair point. Hadn't considered that. We haven't really gotten a description of Mistral yet, have we. Did they say at RTX that they were actually in Mistral. So we are getting at least some of the journey.
...which still feeds my disbelief it's taken them 6-8 months getting to wherever they are and not being there already, but oh well, external factors - what exactly are they looking for, is the kingdom locked down, are there Grimm blocking their path?
Just made me think of Final Fantasy XV
.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!They could use Yang's motorcycle...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.A motorcycle for off-roading? Uhhh....
Honestly, I'd be surprised if they got to Mistral in two years by just walking
Edit: Like, look at this map
. Look at the distance between Vale and Mistral. That is a far distance to walk.

Okay, then they can use Yang's Dirt Bike...but it's less stable.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.A more detailed map that marks all the landmarks we've seen so far, and shaped like a phoenix.

Reason for taking so long getting to Mistral:
They got a boat ride from a friend of Pyrrha's.
