I think Merc's problem is more his dad was training him to be cold blooded killer, the drunk thing was just an added bonus.
Since Merc's insights come off as tools of the trade.
Praise be to the absolute QueenBasically, Cinder wanted The Guy. Marcus was The Guy, and Merc was The Kid. Now Merc is The Guy.

and I'm about to start the second episode.
I can't look at this thread or add it to my watchlist because I have to remain totally blind, but if this post irritates you, send me a PM and I'll stay out of here!
Thanks.
Raven in one of her few decent acts as a Mother will use the power of portals to fix Yang's arm... only to be caught sneaking away by Tai
If there's one thing that RWBY does right, it's that the adults of the setting are NOT overshadowed strength-wise by the younger protagonists.
Sure, RWBY and PN (still unsure of Ren's actual threat level, probably somewhere between 0.75 and 1 Blake, maybe 1.1 if we're generous) are skilled and competent in their own right, but older characters like Roman, Banesaw, Cinder, the Ozluminati and Adam etc, are all significantly stronger fighters (by varying degrees) and more competent
Basically averting Adults Are Useless.
What was in your right hand is hope; And in another hand is something else to fade. They, in quite a few cases, are still useless when it comes to solving the parts of the conflict we see (e.g. more or less entire vol.1 past ep.1, first half of vol. 2 also has no good adults doing anything useful). But, yes, when they do show up on the battlefield, they are noticeably stronger than those still in training.
That said, sometimes, battlefield can significantly alter the power balance between characters: Pyrrha would never fare anywhere as well as she did against Cinder in an empty field with no extra metal for her to control.

Roman's "divorce" crack was just a joke at Cinder in V 2 E 1.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.
