The whiplash wasn't the problem, it was the fact that it took them 2+ years to get here.
Unless Monty Oum left a way for Pyrrha to return, I don't think it matters how much of a storm the fandom kicked up. I think they're going to place his vision to the story over fan service.
That said, if we're only like 1/3 to 1/4 through the story, I strongly doubt we'll be getting into a slaughter-happy bloodbath anytime soon. Some people will likely die, but darkest before dawn, etc. Or they'll psych us out and nobody else'll die. We just wait and see. If someone has to die, I nominate Sun.

I have a feeling we might start seeing a very high turnover rate among Mauve Shirt characters (CFVY and SSSN and the like) along the lines of Akame Ga Kill or Attack On Titan, though RNJR+WBY are probably safe for the next few volumes.
I strongly doubt it's ever going to be at that level. Plus, what sets RWBY apart from them is a lack of "trying too hard" and artificial 'Edge'...
Hey, if they want to kill off team CRDL, though? Yep, I'm good. I'd honestly be very surprised if Qrow, Ironwood and Ozpin walk out alive when all is said and done as well.

I wouldn't count Sun as a major death; his role in the overall plot has basically been "Blake's kinda boyfriend guy".
Edit: An evil, evil thought occurred to me; you know how I had that idea where Blake is killed ala Han Solo by Yang after a Face–Heel Turn? What if instead, the scene is a direct parallel to Blake's encounter with Adam wherein her would be rescuer fares even more poorly?

...Oooh, good one.
Hope Yang gets over her Yangst, though. I expect Team RWBY to get back together sooner or later, and hopefully stronger for it. That said, Cinder is definitely gonna be put on the Complete Monster list in about a week and Adam's on the watchlist now. I swear, though, Adam is the type of guy who seems to practice poses and lines in front of his mirror because he thinks it makes him sound edgier and cooler.
Also, where are people getting this 'Yang turns evil' thing from? She's hyper depressed, not falling to the dark side and slaughtering Tuskens

That really depends on what the villains goals are; I can totally see Cinder being someone along the lines of Doctor Breen from Half Life 2, who, faced with an invading force capable of eradicating the human race without lifting the finger, brokers the surrender of Earth's governments to the Combine, which ultimately let humanity live to fight another day.

For now I suppose, though I'd prefer to have more information before coming to that conclusion, especially given the extent to which the show (mostly through music) has foreshadowed Ozpin being a Broken Pedestal.

Anyway, regarding Yang, depression is something that can turn dark very, very quickly in the right circumstances. When you think you have nothing to lose, a person's normal inhibitions tend to fall by the wayside, and it's comparatively easy for such a person to be swayed by less than benevolent parties promising an end (or pointing at a scapegoat) to their suffering.
Yang's suffered a Career-Ending Injury, her teammates have abandoned her, and she's left at home alone with her father, himself not a role model for coping with grief.

You could say that in some aspects, Cinder wasn't handled very well. Her plan without having almost zero setbacks minus the vol. 2 finale, Torchwick's death and the sudden introduction of the "Silver eyed Warrior" thingy. Many people are already calling her Villain Sue but i'm reserving my judgement until her character gets closure.
The only people that see Cinder as a Complete Monster are maybe the Arkos Shippers in general, but we will see if she becomes "sympathetic" (I highly doubt it for what we heard of her motivations)
Uni catCinder's a villain pulling off an early scheme in the opening parts of the story. She's nowhere near levels of, say, Naraku or Aizenor real Villain Sue types. Yet.
If she gets disqualifying factors, we can cut her from the CM list, but right now, she's done enough to qualify.
The only general complaint i can agree with Cinder is that she was "defeated" in a kind of Anticlimatic way. And how the Silver Eyed Warrior legend was introduced gives vibes of Deus ex Machina but at least it was foreshadowed.
As for the probable winter costumes, i suppose Ruby will wear and even bigger Hood

Well, Nora was walking around in her usual gear which leaves legs exposed, in the middle of Winter.
Presumably we'll see new outfits though. Also, a small tidbit: out of RNJR, Ruby hasn't got a backpack with her. It's like CR is literally all she has on her, minus the clothes on her back.

It was foreshadowed, and appeared in the first third (or so) of the overall story, so I'd call it a Chekhov's Gun rather than a Deus ex Machina. If Cinder's frozen or dead, that's an Anti-Climax, but assuming she just fucked off somewhere else and will presumably return next volume, it's not particularly offensive.

Speak for yourself
It's a veeeeeery long-to-fire Chekovs Gun that was only very subtly hinted at.
But in other thoughts: Anyone else hoping for there to be a confrontation between Blake and Adam again? This time things go better for Blake, but she's still on the ropes. And then Yang shows up, with dear old dad Taiyang. I can see it now "Dad, this is Adam. Adam, this is my dad, Taiyang. Oh yeah dad, he's the one who did that." Which leads to Taiyang going "Hi Adam, I'm dad. You hurt my daughter and her friend. Nothing personal". -queue Curb-Stomp Battle-

The way the show is going, Adam would continue to live up to his Hero Killer reputation and effortlessly decapitate Taiyang.
So huh, it looks like we have the makings of a Five Bad Band; Salem is the Big Bad, Cinder The Dragon, Adam The Brute, now all we need is the Evil Genius and Emerald can be The Dark Chick.

Doubt it. We've seen what trained huntsman are capable of (Qrow VS Winter, Oobleck & Port VS All those Gimm without a scratch, and Ozpin VS Cinder)
Adam's barely even a Hero Killer, he fought and kicked the ass of, for lack of a better term, two untrained kids. Totally a Hero Killer.

@Captain That just stretching it. Adam is strong but i don't think he will kill Taiyang like that. Maybe they could be on the same level.
Well, the silver eyes is better refered to as a Chekovs Gun than a Deus ex Machina, but i still see Cinder's defeat by being frozen with Grimmwing as kind of anticlimatic IMO.
Now, where are the other two bastards doing? They completely dissapeared from the final two episodes
