20 was more of a "in case they decide they're going to keep the show around that long" idea; 12 was more in line with how long Monty expected the story to last.
I'm not concluding it's going to stay this way, just saying that if they do, it won't be long before it's on par with GOT.

From what I heard, Monty planned out Pv P from day one. So yeah, he did intend on the show to get dark.
Also, he did Dead Fantasy, which by the fifth episode shows you he wasn't intending to have wacky high school hijinx for the ENTIRE show.

He was never supposed to stand out, precisely because giving him too much focus could be problematic due to him being a Creator Cameo. Now that he's not, they might be more comfortable about giving Ren some focus. Of the main cast, Ren and Nora were by far the least developed.
Something occurs to me: Pyrrha was from Haven/Mistral originally, right? It would be such a gut punch for RNJR to meet Pyrrha's family there, and have to be the bearers of bad news.

Oh Jesus Christ, I don't know if I could take that. AOT was aboslutely superb about making people give a shit about the deaths of Red Shirts, and this is a person with actual, significant development.
Haven is the academy of Mistral though.

That's Patch. The arrangement seems to be Beacon—> Vale, Haven —> Mistral, Atlas —> Mantle (though Atlas now refers to the entire kingdom), and I have no idea —> Vaccuo.
Not really, at least not in a creative capacity, he did a fair amount of freelance animation work. Some of his tweets indicate he was a fan of Madoka's director (Gen Urobuchi) though.

What's going on with Red vs Blue right now. So there will be more seasons of it, which bodes well for RWBY being a long-running show.
RVB's production mythos is drastically different from RWBY's however; RWBY had a defined end point from the very beginning, RVB started out as derpy youtube machinima. While Monty might have come up with something to do with the show after that point, with him gone, I doubt they'll be willing to make the sort of drastic changes that might be necessary to make additional seasons of RWBY.
So yeah, I'm totally expecting to see a middle aged couple in Haven with bright red hair. I wonder how that would go.

He apparently planned 20.
And each volume consists of a season.
So... Yeah, Monty has shit covered.
