It's a fairly early trailer, am I correct? If so, then there's reason to hope that the quality of the acting might pick up. As to the amount of snarking, I'll admit that I would like to hear more of it, but think that it's early enough that I'm hesitant to guess at how much there will actually be in the final game.

That trailer's been bouncing around the internet for about two years now. The voice acting could have been recent, but I've no idea.

The Escapist has a hands-off preview.

Overall, it actually sounds really promising. Admittedly there's a combat system, but most of the rest reads a lot like a Thief game to me. They also have their share of screenshots, some of which seem to be in that Strategy Informer set, and some of which I don't seem to see there; of particular note to me is one that shows what may well be a water arrow about to be fired at a brazier.

A few others of those seem to have the feeling that I'd expect, especially the one that depicts Garrett moving across beams far above what look to be guards.

Overall, the graphics look pretty thoroughly impressive, and what description The Escapist gives bears that up, I do think. I think that I rather like the aesthetic — it looks like a setting that I could enjoy exploring.

On the negative side, I don't think that what they're describing is terribly likely at all to run on my current computer, so I may be stuck waiting until such time as I get a new one...

But then, the release is only in 2014, so you never know — perhaps by then I'll have an opportunity to get a machine that's up to running it. ^_^

[up][up] Huh — maybe there are some elements of magic present in this new game... That's encouraging to see, at least.

They just said they were toning down the magic elements. I imagine they're aiming to make it more in line with Thief II.

Thank goodness.

High hopes for the game, especially if they can pull off the hands thing. Also hoping that Focus is better implemented than in Hitman.

Suppose now would be a good time to pick up the Thief Collection on Steam? Are all three generally considered good or it is like the case with Hitman where the first game should be avoided or something?

And I didn't mind Human Revolution so I have cautious hope for this one. I'll be watching media releases to form a better opinion though.

All three games are fairly highly regarded. The first is an undisputed classic, the second is regarded as the best, and the third, well, that's somewhat mixed. It's a solid stealth game, but there are a number of areas where it's definitely weaker than the first two, mainly the removal of rope arrows and the vastly smaller levels. Some people really like it, some people regard it as the Invisible War of the franchise.

As for the first game, the only real complaint is that a number of people didn't like the levels that had a focus on zombies and monsters and underground catacombs, but there's still plenty of enjoyment to be had in levels like Down in the Bonehoard and Return to the Haunted Cathedral. Then there's the level Escape!, which is, er... not very good. At all. Aside from that, Thief Gold is one of my favorite games ever, and The Metal Age is even better (so far, at least - I'm on Eavesdropping).

The third game's strange. It's the poster child for consolization, given that it's made from larger levels which have been cut into smaller ones in order to work around the limitations of the XBOX. Though a strict sequel to earlier games, including the use of some fairly minor lore elements to tell its story, elements of its characterisations are at odds with earlier games and it seems to have a generally weaker design team working behind its superobjectives.

It was also graced by level designed Jordan Thomas, who's amazing, and there are several really great levels which are his work. (He worked on Fort Frolic in Bioshock, and Fontaine Futuristics and Pauper's Drop in Bioshock 2.)

The third game also introduced the idea of being in Garrett's body - instead of being strictly FPS, when in first person you can look down at your own body or hands, etc, making you feel like you're really there. However, the game feels shiny, and it's a little too easy.

The ending of the game, however, makes it all worthwhile with the Book End to the first game.

IMO, the biggest problem with Thief 3 was including always-aggro guards in the city streets. Its aggravating more than anything else. What they should have done was have the guards be there, but only aggro if they actually saw you break the law, or someone reported you breaking the law. You'd still have to be sneaky and careful and hide bodies, but you'd actually be able to treat the overworld hub *differently* than the mission levels.

Okay, Thief will be "mystical but not magical". In other words, no zombies, but still the chance for weird creepy stuff like the The Cradle.

[up][up] I shed a single tear. :P

Originally I was severely distressed, but I think I actually like the 'even lower' fantasy direction they're taking it. The overtly-magical-and-fantastic was what I liked least about the original games anyway. Mechanists and Hammerites and Keepers were more interesting than gods and dryads and glyph magic anyway. (Though I'll probably miss the burricks.)

...actually, more than anything else it kind of reminds me of the Gentleman Bastard books. 8)

Honestly the whole plot of the magical and supernatural things in Thief was the part I liked least as well. I sort of just wanted a game about being a master thief and stealing from people in a steampunk world without magic. Grand heists of increasingly elaborately secured steampunk mansions and that sort of dark and gritty atmosphere that the Thief games managed to capture fairly well.

If I have to give the third one any particular props, it's that the atmosphere of the game is really good. It has a super gritty "feel" to it. I just really wanted to ditch the Keepers and the whole you have a destiny quest deal to it and just be "Badass steampunk thief evading guards and getting rich as fuck" kind of game, where you win when you can pull off the grandest heist of them all.

Also would like lots more gadgets to spend my dosh on, the more fantastical and steampunk the better.
