The jokes are definitely using the game mechanics of moving around the world and clicking through character dialogue, but the entries themselves make it clear that it's those specific jokes that are being disliked by some people, NOT the whole "exploring the world" and "going through character dialogue" mechanics of the game.
So my objection to calling putting those entries under Scrappy Mechanic is that those specific jokes aren't game mechanics; they use game mechanics to execute the jokes, but what those people dislike are the jokes themselves. I highly doubt that the people who didn't like the General White World Tour and the 100 Apologies also didn't like every other instance where Mario moves around the world and interacts with characters.
Also a minor nitpick: the General White thing (at least the first one) is NOT a sidequest; it's a mandatory bit you have to do during the main quest, which would not qualify as a sidequest. There is a sidequest where you have to do the General White World Tour again, but that's an optional sidequest.

"I squirm, I struggle, ergo I am. Faced with death, I am finally, truly alive."Someone put this on YMMV.Dragon Quest:
- The Scrappy: Charmles may very well be the most hated character in the entire series. He pronounces his name "Charm-LAY", but many DQ8 fans have much less kind names to use for him. Even the other characters in the game don't like him, which makes him this In-Universe.
Can you tell what’s wrong with it? I know I sure do.

Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Yuppers: the audience' hate for Charmles is entirely intentional. He might fit in Hate Sink, but certainly not The Scrappy.
- For fans of Princess Peach's more active appearances in other games, her portrayal here is probably among her worst due to being turned into a Ditz who actually lets herself get kidnapped at one point early on, and any opportunity she does have to be useful is squandered by the Piantas (which also adds to their own Scrappydom). And then there's her infamous moment in Pinna Park where she had to think about whether she could have possibly given birth to Bowser Jr.
I deleted this since it broke the consistently hated rule.
Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread! She doesn't let herself get kidnapped either >.> It might be on TheScrappy.Super Mario Bros, too.

The Protomen enhanced my life.I don't see Peach on there. But I did see Bowser (his Sticker Star appearance) on there, which I will axe as soon as I get the approval.
I also question Kersti's appearance on that page now that I think about it, a lot of the hate comes from people who didn't like Sticker Star. It doesn't indicate people who liked the game didn't like her. So should I axe it or no?
EDIT: Oh man, I see some more bad examples on here
- Mario & Luigi: Dream Team:
- The Dream Stone Spirit, considering how he acts like a total Jerkass to you and refuses to tell you where Bowser and Antasma were going with the MacGuffin which, may we remind you, he is the spirit of, going so far as to turn into a giant drill machine to get rid of you for trying to get the information out of him. Needless to say, it will be immensely satisfying to beat the snot out of him as Giant Luigi.
- Popple, originally an Ensemble Dark Horse from Superstar Saga, became this in Dream Team for being a complete Jerkass that initiates an annoying boss fight with Wiggler, becomes The Millstone during the fight, and then turns on you after you defeat Wiggler. Not to mention that his status as a recurring boss and his unique boss music is gone, so none of his likable traits are around. The only thing people still find enjoyable about him in this game is his Verbal Tic See?
- Mario & Luigi: Dream Team:
The first Dream Team example has no indication that he was supposed to be liked, (possibly a Hate Sink) and the second one breaks the consistently hated rule.

Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Even though I'm not a fan of the series, I can tell that this on YMMV.Axis Powers Hetalia is a mess. A lot of people find Sealand cute based on YouTube comments, Japan is a main character, and it admits that Korea and Sealand aren't hated much anymore.
- The Scrappy: While not as open as in Korea's case, you can bet that in a poll about disliked characters, Sealand will have a "top" spot.
- Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Fans generally started liking him more mainly because he seems to be the only nation that was able to defend himself against the mysterious figure and question him with no problems, even striking an Intergenerational Friendship. In fact, a lot of memes concerning him exploded because of said incident.
- Due to being a micronation and not a real country, as well as some fans not liking her bratty personality, Wy's debut quickly earned her this position along with some accusations of being part of a Spotlight-Stealing Squad.
- No discussion of The Scrappy would be complete without Korea, who was raked over the coals by fans disgruntled about the Korean Moral Guardians forcing the cancellation of the Hetalia anime's TV broadcast. Fortunately, this seems to have all but died down with the passage of time; nowadays it's a lot more common for fans to lament that Korea isn't in the anime instead.
- Or Japan, who was hated by people who called him a Misplaced Nationalism-fueled character that was ruining the anime after every episode he appeared in. Or took personal offense about him being as beloved in Japanese fandom as Canada was in Western fandom. Or claimed that him not being depicted as a monster or his Imperial Japan atrocities not being portrayed in graphic detail in a series focused on the lighthearted side of history meant that Himaruya was "trivializing" history. It was mainly limited to a Vocal Minority, but they kept on finding the stupidest reasons to bash him; there was even a post on the Hetalia comm that bashed Japan as a "shojo harem manga heroine" to promote Turkey/Poland. Fortunately, like with Korea, the hate has quieted down over time, probably because Japan having a minor or supporting role at best in the comics means that the Vocal Minority can't call him a Spotlight-Stealing Squad by any stretch of the imagination.
Kersti seems pretty disliked, though I have seen some fan art, people who ship her with Huey, and an Alas, Poor Scrappy moment for her sacrifice and also a sad moment in the forest where she's alone and apologizes to Mario, but it's tiny text so a lot of players miss it. It seems people that dislike the game dislike her but I can't find opinions on her from people that liked it.

Isn’t Japan also a case of Americans Hate Tingle, going by how his entry says the country likes that character?

F1 the MS Office robo-assistant
Just a heads up, this is a very long post, as it covers nearly the entirety of The Scrappy/Western Animation:
- In the "Pal and Kate Speak" episodes, Francine's pet cat, Nemo, is hated for reasons similar to Pal and Kate's listed above, as well as playing the Cats Are Mean stereotype a little too straight.
Isn't Nemo meant to be an antagonistic character in those episodes? Also, the "Pal and Kate Speak" episodes themselves are not well-liked, so Nemo might fail the "Hated by fans" criterion as well.
- The Tibble Twins are not very well liked, due to the fact that they are both very bratty and dimwitted, and very rarely get punished for their actions. While they may have a Freudian Excuse (their parents aren't around, so they are taken care of by their grandmother, who seems to spoil them), that doesn't excuse the fact that they misbehave so much, they make D.W. look like a saint in comparison. Also, they've become incredibly overexposed over the years.
Aren't they meant to serve as Deliberately Bad Examples when compared to D.W. in episodes where she gets a Sympathetic P.O.V.?
- Anodites aren't a very well received species due to what many saw as an incredibly confusing and pointless retcon concerning the existence of magic in the show's universe, with the species itself appearing to be completely overpowered. It doesn't help that the few representatives (Sunny and Verdona, though mostly Verdona for her admitted favoritism to Gwen and actually aggressively attacking her own grandson) weren't well-liked either.
This breaks the "Single characters only" criterion.
- Harrangue managed to get even more hatred than he already had in Ultimate Alien when he praised the Incurseans for invading Earth and getting rid of Ben.
If he cheered at The Hero being killed, it's probably safe to say we're not meant to like him.
- Probably the most despised character is Iggy from "Arnold Betrays Iggy". It starts with blaming Arnold entirely for something that was mostly Stinky and Sid's fault, followed by making Arnold his servant for weeks and still not forgiving him after that, ending with forcing Arnold into a sadistic and cringe-worthy walk of shame. He was in fact demoted back to being an extra after that episode.
- Gerald's younger sister Timberly is disliked by most of the fandom due to her being an Annoying Younger Sibling and often getting in the way or ruining Arnold and Gerald's plans. Screwing over Arnold and Gerald twice in "Chocolate Turtles" being a major example.
- Sid. He is a Poisonous Friend who betrays everyone at the drop of a hat, makes fun of Harold and Patty like a Jerkass, and everyone forgets he pulls the same thing over, and over, and over again. Whenever Sid gets A Day in the Limelight, it highlights how weird and off-kilter he is, and not in a likeable way either. "Bag of Money" is the most notable example of why Sid is often disliked.
- Principal Wartz has quite a few haters for acting like a tyrannical douchebag and being far too cruel to both the students and the teachers when giving out punishments. Even Arnold called him out for continuing to extend Harold's suspension despite Harold literally begging for mercy, and in return, Wartz suspends him for two days.
Since all of those characters are hated for acting antagonistic to other characters, they are more likely to be Hate Sinks.
- Lisa Berger, particularly in "The Hobbit". She might have been The Woobie for her one-sided crush on Butters, but after she gets Photoshopped, she turns into an abrasive and arrogant bitch. While the fandom may debate extensively about how Wendy handled the issue in this episode, they'll unanimously agree that Lisa was terrible.
Hated for being a bitch = Hate Sink
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987):
- We have Vernon, a whiny load who existed to make April look better.
- Also Burne, April's boss for being a massively unsympathetic Jerkass. Made worse by the fact that he was Put on a Bus by the time he could finally be useful to the plot.
Neither of them seem like they're meant to be liked, since Vernon exists to make April look better in comparison and Byrne is a Jerkass.
- Dave, who was already a Base-Breaking Character before Pahkitew Island started. Following the severe and record breaking blows to his character like taking a level in jerkass and his Sanity Slippage in "Hurl and Go Seek" and the finale, he has now become one of the most unpopular characters in the series.
- Beth in the original series was at best a Base-Breaking Character, while her counterpart in the spinoff series Total DramaRama is noticeably despised by most. Of all the characters who've undergone jerkiness that's exclusive to this series, her's is by far the most noticeable as she's become a raging narcissist who commits uncaring actions for her own benefit and rarely (if ever) suffers any consequences for them. Not helped is how she's one of the most focused on characters in the series, with most of the episodes where she's the main character doing nothing except highlighting how nasty she is. What also doesn't help her is her Adaptation Personality Change of being more gross then her original series counterpart and is often used for Toilet Humor.
Both of them seem like they're intended to be unlikeable characters. Heck, the Beth entry even takes note of the fact that her focus episodes do nothing but highlight her nastiness.
- Swamp Rat qualifies for this also because of how he effectively Took a Level in Jerkass in practically every appearance he was in, though he at least comes off as more watchable than Pug.
No indication in the example that we're supposed to like him despite his Jerkass behavior.
- Nanette Manoir from Angela Anaconda is an invoked example - Angela never misses an opportunity to point out how much she hates Nanette, and in practically every episode, there's an extended Imagine Spot where Nanette gets elaborately humiliated. And in an active defiance of Designated Villain, Angela's hatred is completely and utterly justified - Nanette is a manipulative, selfish, arrogant, 'fake-French' and downright nasty Rich Bitch who happily goes out of her way to make Angela's life worse. Nanette's Beta Bitch, January, also gets this treatment to a much lesser extent, since she just follows whoever's popular rather than being outright malevolent like Nanette. Karlene on the other hand actually gets some Character Development.
A creator-invoked "Scrappy" would actually be a Hate Sink.
- Princess Clara degraded herself into being a scrappy as well as she was originally portrayed as an Innocently Insensitive princess but over the course of the series, she molded herself into a Holier Than Thou woman who was also a huge homophobe and then in season 3 she turned into an unsympathetic, selfish Jerkass while she apparently didn't have any Freudian Excuse for turning into this.
Doesn't explain why she's supposed to be likeable.
- Sarah falls under this to a lot of fans. She's an annoying brat of a child who does nothing but act bossy towards the other characters (including her Morality Pet Jimmy), is loud and obnoxious, and is especially abusive to her brother Ed (who, for the most part, is unbelievably nice/loyal to her... when he's not fearing her) both physically and verbally while being a Karma Houdini (IE: "Ed, you have to do as I say no matter what, or I'll tell Mom!").
- Out of the Kankers, Lee. Marie is considered intriguing and good looking, May has Hidden Depths and the most sympathetic personality. Lee, on the other hand, is seen as obnoxious and unattractive so she's the one who gets the most hate.
The hatred towards them seems to be because they act like jerks to other characters, so I'm not sure it's unintentional.
- Mr. Wong. Sexist, stupid, and demeaning to everyone, he's earned a lot of haters who wished he died in Into the Wild Green Yonder. And given that sexism and possessive behavior towards one's children are Chinese stereotypes, he might even qualify as an Ethnic Scrappy.
- Ndnd, the wife of Lrrr is hated as well as she basically does nothing but nag her husband around and downright abuses him verbally while in one episode, she hits him over the head with a frying pan and kicks him out of their house all because he got her a gift she didn't really like.
- Michelle, who not only cheated on Fry, but showed that she was an incredibly selfish and controlling person in her Day in the Limelight episode.
No indication in those entries that they're meant to be likeable.
- And even Godzooky himself is nothing compared to the human characters in the series. Bland, one-dimensional characters whose only purposes are to either A.) Get attacked/captured by the Monster of the Week and/or B.) Summon Godzilla to solve all of their problems for them. Say what you will about Godzooky. At least he actually does something other than say "Oh, no! (Insert monster here) is destroying the city/attacking the Tagalong Kid! We must summon Godzilla!"
They're a group, not a single character.
These entries don't explain why we're meant to like them.
- In House of Mouse, Shelby Turtle is seen as an annoying little hellion and Karma Houdini who has gotten away with tormenting both Donald and Mickey, in both the wraparounds and the Mouseworks shorts. His mother is hated as well because she never realizes how much trouble her son causes them, yells at them really loud whenever they mess up, and whenever they do manage to get the job done, she tells them she will have them babysit her son again on a later day.
Shelby is supposed to be likeable... how, exactly?
- Kaeloo: Pretty, the group Alpha Bitch, is widely despised by the fans for her cruel, bullying nature, constant mockery of everyone else and superior attitude. Unlike Mr. Cat (who has most of these traits but is still adored by the fandom), she has never actually shown signs of caring for the rest of the cast (she rejoices when they are presumed dead in one episode), and the way she treats her sister is awful.
She is currently listed as both this and a Hate Sink. Based on the entry, I'd guess she qualifies more as the latter.
- Peggy Hill is seen as this due to her massive Flanderization in later seasons changing her from a somewhat smug yet intelligent woman who spoke decent if rudimentary Spanish, to a Jerkass Small Name, Big Ego who couldn't speak a lick of Spanish if her life depended on it yet she acted like she was fluent in the language. It also doesn't help she became so smug in later seasons that she even tried to mooch off of Hank's popularity as a (temporary) substitute teacher in order to win yet another substitute teacher's award, and sabotaged Lucky's attempt to get his GED by giving him false answers, then automatically assumed he and everyone else in his family were bastards because no one achieved their goals before marrying, before he explained they were married in shotgun weddings.
- Kahn and Minh Souphanousinphone both fall here. While they just barely avoid being walking Asian stereotypes, they are both obnoxious Jerkass people who take utter pleasure in being dicks towards their neighbors, including referring to them as "Rednecks" in a derogatory sense. While they do have some redeeming qualities (such as genuinely caring for their daughter, Connie), said good aspects of them are overshadowed by their flaws. One episode in the series had Kahn not only sexually harass Hank (all because Hank could see Kahn through Kahn's bathroom window), but also he and Mihn would break into Hank's house, raid the fridge, mess with the furniture, and it's implied they would have sex there as well all the while mocking Hank and Peggy. There's being a jerk, and then there's blatantly breaking the law just for the sick amusement of it.
Doesn't explain how they're supposed to be likeable.
- Burnu was initially a scrappy as well as he was initially portrayed an arrogant frog who constantly made condescending comments towards Darel just because Darel was not a kulipari like Burnu was. In Burnu's case though, he gets Rescued from the Scrappy Heap when he gets a significant amount of Character Development after episode 8 and his conversation in the finale with Tipi proves that he got rescued from the heap of scrappies.
While he did get better, it seems he was more of a Hate Sink during the period the entry claims him to have been a Scrappy.
- Gawayne from Mysticons is presented as this. He doesn't care that his father and step-mother are petrified, only caring to be King. He also poorly treats his butler, as seen in Episode 3, and in his Character Video, when asked about helping others, he dismisses them. His voice is also annoying, and it doesn't help that from any of his videos does it seem like he'll develop any time soon.
Doesn't explain how he's supposed to be likeable.
- Popeye: In a handful of theatrical cartoons when Popeye joined the Navy, he was given a buddy named Shorty who would frequently screw things up, making Popeye miserable. In one cartoon, Popeye got so annoyed with him, he hauled off and shot him in the end.
The fact that Popeye shot him for his behavior makes it unlikely that his hatred was unintentional.
- On The Smurfs, Brainy Smurf was someone who nobody liked in-universe or out. On the surface, he's a Know-Nothing Know-It-All who's more of a narcissist than Vanity Smurf (a guy whose name denotes narcissism) and more annoying than, well, anyone else on the show, mostly because of his whiny, nasally voice as he lectures anyone unlucky enough to listen. He never plays a vital part of the story (unless he's the antagonist of the story, which happened a lot). Worst of all, this guy tends to do terrible things all the time, like bake living gingerbread Smurfs that almost destroy the village, blame Clumsy for losing Baby Smurf (after he was responsible) and put him through a Kangaroo Court, and even seize control of the village, crown himself king, rule like a tyrant, and start a Smurf civil war. (Although in fairness, it wasn't him in the original version.)
Since he's not liked In-Universe and has had antagonistic roles, he's probably a Hate Sink.
- The Mistress is mostly hated for her stuck-up personality, her cruelty to Charise, and for attempting to take over Superjail twice (briefly succeeding the second time), as well as being seen as in the way of The Warden and Lord Stingray by particular fans. She was slightly relieved of this when she slept with Alice and became a hippie.
She seems like a villainous character that we're not meant to like to begin with.
- Superman: The Animated Series: Due to abandoning Superman in his time of need by being willing to let Supergirl die in the Grand Finale and then using Superman's rightful anger at him for stabbing him in the back as an excuse for a Face–Heel Turn in Justice League Unlimited, it's highly doubtful you'll find someone who likes Professor Hamilton ever again. Bruce Timm stated in his Modern Masters book that THEY didn't like Professor Hamilton in the first place. That's why, when debating who Darkseid should kill, they finally came up with Dan Turpin, because they weren't allowed to kill Ma and Pa Kent and they felt if they killed Professor Hamilton it wouldn't have any impact, because they never liked him anyway.
It mentions that the creators don't like him either. In other words, Hate Sink.
- Jennifer Shope is another Scrappy as when she speaks, she often raises her voice and when she does so, her voice sounds very irritating and distasteful. She is also hated for when she Took a Level in Jerkass by forcing Kevin to transform into a gerbil and proceeds to humiliate him all so she wouldn't get an F in her science project, Her fail was a Good Punishment.
- Mr. Wertz for being a Karma Houdini and for having done things that would have gotten him fired from his job as a science teacher, arrested, and thrown in jail as he once attempted to mind control all of Cornbury and experimented with the virus in a secret lab underneath the school.
- Principal Warmeramer is mainly hated for just being a minor obstacle for the Noobs to go through in concealing their secret identities and for having Mr. Wertz sent to a mental institution instead of firing him for trying to enslave Cornbury with mind control goggles.
- Jock Jockerson is disliked for being a Flat Character as he seemed to have no purpose on the show other than to bully the Noobs and become the first person on the show to be infected with the virus in the first episode. After the first episode, Jock's importance on the show seemed to quickly evaporate and was apparently Demoted to Extra by being pushed into the background in most of his appearances.
Jennifer's Jerkass behavior and the Laser-Guided Karma she receives indicate that we're not meant to like her, and Mr. Wertz's and Principal Warmerarer's entries make them sound like villains. Jock was probably deliberately written to be a one-dimensional bully so that there would be nothing likable about him.
- There's the High Marshall of Thembria, who also doubles as an Ethnic Scrappy. He's so bad that his threats and mistreatment of Colonel Spigot save the colonel from being a Scrappy and push him into Jerkass Woobie territory.
The High Marshall sounds like he's a deliberately villainous character.
- Gizmo, of was perhaps the most commonly-appearing villain in the series, behind Slade. However, he also happened to be a whiny, self-superior Bratty Half-Pint with an annoying voice and nothing resembling Character Development. Even his own teammates don't like him.
I think his brattiness is only meant to make him even more unlikable to the audience in addition to his actual villainous qualities, in the same vein as Princess Morbucks.
- Sweetie is also hated for being a Jerkass who torments Furball and for being a bit of a Karma Houdini.
Sounds like a Hate Sink to me.
- The babysitter who would spend more time talking on the phone, rather than babysitting, while Tom and Jerry have to always watch the baby since it always crawls its way to danger. The babysitter also repeatedly beats Tom with her broom for supposedly "bothering" the baby. She always got off scot-free for this.
I'm actually not entirely sure, but again, she sounds more like a Hate Sink to me.
- The Spider-Cycle counts as an object example of this trope; most fans think that the only reason Spider-Man was given a motorbike was for merchandise purposes, and feel like it's essentially useless, considering he can web-sling. An excuse is given to justify, but it's generally considered a poor one.
- It even gets this treatment in-universe from Hawkeye, who even lampshades how stupid it is to have a bike when you can web-sling.
I'm not sure if I'm actually right, but I was under the impression that only characters could be Scrappies. And even if objects could be Scrappies, Hawkeye's In-Universe view on it would probably qualify it as more of a Hate Sink (if objects could be those).
- The Murderous Moppets, who the creators planned to keep on the show solely because they're so universally despised by the fans. The Moppets are hated by the characters themselves.
Do I even need to explain what's wrong with this one? I don't think so.
- Dermott, too, has become something of a Scrappy. He was almost universally hated by fans and many have called for his non-return: he's obnoxious, boastful, and gets Hank in trouble more than a few times. The fans has softened up to Dermott in season 5 for being more a true friend to Hank and becoming stoked over being a Venture brother.
While he redeemed himself, it doesn't sound like he was even meant to be likeable during his "Scrappy" period.
- Young Justice: Lagoon Boy. First off he's a Replacement Scrappy for Face–Heel Turn Aqualad. Secondly, he's Megan's new boyfriend. Third, he's incredibly annoying and an incredibly Flat Character. Fourth, his powers suck. About the best that can be said is that we're probably supposed to dislike him, given how the rest of the cast reacts when he's around.
Need I even explain? This Scrappy entry contradicts itself by outright saying that the character it's describing is a Hate Sink. This one should definitely be cut.
I foolishly got myself bounced by adding bigotry to my troper page, so unless a miracle happens and I get unbounced someday like Ag Prov did way back when, don't expect any contributions from me anytime soon.Might I also add that Snips and Snails like Angel from MLP Fi M got rescued, and are generally seen as heroic characters as of Season 9? It's been 6 months so I figured I might as well say that.
Some of the characters you discussed, like Shope from Super Noobs, who is a main character, seem to fall more under Designated Hero or Unintentionally Unsympathetic than Hate Sink, so they may qualify as scrappies.
Also, I have doubts about this example as well:
- Take Omi, ratchet his voice up even higher than normal, slap on a pair of dumb green glasses and some fanboy traits, and presto! You have Xiaolin Chronicles derided Ping-Pong.

I'm mainly a fan of underrated media.
F1 the MS Office robo-assistant
Yeah, sorry about that. I haven't seen most of those works myself, so I was only going by what the entries said about the characters.
This on YMMV.Fallout 4 is a mess; I haven't played the game, but Dogmeat just talks about his Artificial Stupidity and Preston Garvey is an Annoying Video Game Helper. Also, Memes.Fallout potholes Strong to The Scrappy, but I believe he has fans.
- The Scrappy:
- Good luck finding anyone who likes Marcy Long, Sanctuary's resident bag of complaints and an Ungrateful Bastard who complains after you rescue Preston's group. All her dialogue consists of either whining, or acting like an abrasive jackass, leading many to want to either kill her or exile her from Sanctuary. Lest you blame it on post-traumatic stress disorder, you can find the Longs' old store in Quincy; an entry on Jun's terminal reveals she was like this even before they were forced to flee and lost their son.
- With the Nuka-World update patch (AKA Patch 1.7 (or Patch 1.0.9 for PlayStation 4 players)), included in the patch notes is this fix: Jun and Marcy Long are no longer essential after completing "Sanctuary". Meaning that those who dislike Marcy can finally put her in what many deem to be her rightful place - the grave.
- As a final bit of evidence to how little she's liked, nobody will attack you if you just walk up and shoot her.
- Preston Garvey himself is this to a fair share of the fandom, since he constantly gives timed radiant quests (rescue kidnapped settler, clear out new settlement, clear out ghouls/muties/raiders) and will immediately provide new ones upon completion (even as you're trying to turn in the old quests or talk about story-related ones), which wears its welcome out very quickly. You can avoid this by not talking to him and exiling him to a far away settlement (radiant quests that you've finished but not turned in will eventually "expire" and be flagged as complete), but that means every time you go to that settlement you're at risk of being bombarded with more quests. It doesn't help that many find his personality bland because he's way too much of a Nice Guy.
- If the character has the Intimidation perk prior it is possible to get through the Museum of Freedom with minimal bloodshed, right until you reach the door Preston and his group are hiding behind. Preston will refuse to open this door until all the raiders are killed, basically forcing you to go back and murder the raiders that have just surrendered to you. In context the game engine and scripting cannot handle the situation otherwise, but in character it does make him come across as a bit of a ruthless dick.
- This was somewhat mitigated in a patch, since he now gives out quests far less often and they complete automatically after a certain period of time. For those that really want to do Minutemen quests though, tune in to Radio Freedom and they'll occasionally put out a request that someone go help a settlement that's in trouble.
- Dogmeat can also be this, what with his tendency to run through your line of fire, getting in your way, and trigger traps.
- Although it's not really his fault, a lot of players feel a serious urge to bash Drummer Boy's skull in every time they fast-travel to Railroad HQ, only for the guy to immediately run up to them and announce that Desdemona/Tinker Tom/Doc Carrington/P.A.M. need an errand boy for yet another repetitive radiant quest - again. It's telling that many who side against the Railroad make a beeline for Drummer Boy before they turn their attention to the much heavier armed members shooting at them the whole time.
- Bobbi No-Nose isn't exactly well-liked, since she refuses to tell you anything about the job she's hired you for, the quest tied to said job is a tedious slog, and she's conning you into stealing from Hancock, one of the most popular companions in the game without providing any sympathetic motivation on her part. Thankfully, some catharsis can be extracted from being given the chance to kill her at the end of the quest.
- Jezebel from Automatron exists for two reasons. Plot-wise, she gives the player insight into why Robobrains are hostile to humans. Mostly, though, she's there to be a total asshole whose primary directives are rudeness and uselessness, since she can't serve as a companion and can't be put to work on many settlement duties. Thankfully, she is not and never was essential, so the Sole Survivor can terminate her sorry ass as soon as she's gotten a new body (and if you do so in front of Codsworth after she insults him, you'll earn his approval).
Can I add Mary Goodnight from The Man With the Golden Gun in the The Scrappy Live Action Films page? I see her being constantly cited as one of the worst Bond Girls in the James Bond franchise, along with Stacey Sutton and Christmas Jones, due to her clumsy personality and being unable to help Bond at all during the entire film.
Saw this while I was cleaning up Phantasy Star Online 2's YMMV page:
- The Scrappy:
- Monica was put into Dudu's position on even-numbered blocks for the purpose of being so Moe that you couldn't stay mad at her while failing your grinds. It hasn't worked so far; in fact her clumsiness in comparison to Dudu's competence laced with trolling has made some people hate her more.
- Hitsugi is by far the least popular protagonist in the story, mostly due to having a bland and forgettable character. To put this into perspective, during the first (and only) General Election she was featured as a choice in, she placed 13th. That's lower than Kouri.
- Goronzoran. Possibly one of the least memorable bosses in the game, it also happens to be a Goddamned Boss with Deflector Shields that make it either the easiest or worst boss to encounter depending on the content you're playing and who you're running it with.
I'm not sure what the Japanese side of the fandom thinks of Monica, so I don't know if it's a valid entry or not.
For Hitsugi's entry, unpopularity isn't the same as being hated. As discussed somewhere in this thread, popularity polls can disprove a character being a Scrappy, but can't prove one being hated.
Goronzoran's entry doesn't mention their character whatsoever other than "not being memorable".

Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Bringing up this example from Birds of Prey (2020):
- The Scrappy: Nobody seems to like the movie's version of Cassandra Cain. Fans of her comic counterpart dislike her for being a In Name Only adaptation of the character, lacking both her strong moral code and her fighting skills, or her distinctive learning difficulties. Casual viewers likewise dislike her for being utterly useless, lacking any significant characterisation and existing mostly to prop up Harley.
Whilst, fans of the comic version of Cassandra Cain have complained about her being In Name Only most of them I've seen have admitted that as a character in her own right she's fine, and I haven't seen any hatred of the character from non-comic book fans.
From TheScrappy.Animated Films:
- Gary from the 2017 Netflix film Sahara is very hated for his lack of concern for his kidnapped sister, annoying Totally Radical talk, and deliberately being The Load to main protagonist Ajar. Ajar and his scorpion friend Pit even tell him how annoying he is right to his face, and to some, his Character Development at the end of the movie seemed to be too little, too late.

F1 the MS Office robo-assistant
I haven't seen the film, but the example says that the film did apparently try to give him some sympathetic Character Development towards the end (although it fell flat).
From World of Warcraft
- Of all the leaders in Vanilla, Fandral Staghelm received the most hate, due to his arrogant nature, lack of any real importance, replacing fan favorite Malfurion Stormrage as the Night Elven archdruid, and effectively causing the whole Ahn'Qiraj storyline simply because he couldn't move past his son's death. Probably why they wisely decided to have him commit a Face–Heel Turn in Cataclysm.
He keeps, but I will give a slight rewrite because this is a case where the character is supposed to be sympathetic but it didn't work out due to his jerkassery and xenophobic nature.
- Later, Garrosh Hellscream takes the title from him in unequivocal fashion, being introduced in Outland as a barely competent leader who nevertheless comes to stand by Thrall's right hand in Northrend while being unremittingly hostile to the Alliance and sabotaging his Warchief's attempts to make peace at every opportunity. And he became the leader of the Horde in Cataclysm. Put it this way: Cairne "Nice-grandfatherly-type-who-wants-to-teach-and-nurture-all-of-you" Bloodhoof tries to kill him!
- Interestingly, after becoming a full-fledged Big Bad in Mists of Pandaria and a secondary villain in Warlords of Draenor, Garrosh has actually become a lot more palatable to the fanbase. Apparently, a Well-Intentioned Extremist with a Freudian Excuse worked much better as an Anti-Villain rather than a unlikeable Sociopathic Hero.
Very out of date(through it's correct that the character got Vindicated by History, through the entry explains why inadequately from how I remember it), needs rewrite.
- Trade Prince Gallywix, leader of the playable Bilgewater Goblins may be the most unanimously hated racial leader in the game. He treats his own people like dirt throughout the entire Goblin starter zone, especially the player character, including stealing their life savings, enslaving them, and trying to kill them. What makes fans so angry about this is that he gets away with all of it without so much as an apology because Thrall named him the new Goblin leader, despite there being at least several other Goblins that would be more qualified and trustworthy, including fan-favorite character, Sassy Hardwrench.
- This has died down a bit in later expansions, becoming a bit more merciful and ambiguous (by goblin standards, anyway). His portrayal during the Garrosh saga was much more well-received, mainly due to secretly vying for peace between the races and fighting Garrosh head-on in a Bad Future.
Not sure about this one. Gallywix could have potentially be a intentional Hate Sink given how he is portrayed as Sylvanas eager partner-in-crime along with Nathanos in Battle for Azeroth and willing to capitalize on the Azerite proliferation regardless of the consequences, albeit one who's arc took so long to resolve in part due to Blizzard's habit of ignoring characters they set up.
- Me'dan, son of Medivh and Garona and the new Guardian of Tirisfal, is widely disliked for his qualities - mainly because the aforementioned makes him a one-of-a-kind Heinz Hybrid with the power level of a Guardian and All Your Powers Combined, and some consider his parents a Crack Pairing. His conspicuous absence in the main game is generally considered to be the result of his negative reception in the comics. There's even speculation that Thrall's role in Cataclysm (itself lukewarmly received) was originally intended for Med'an.
He keeps, no need for rewrite. Side note that this got so bad that Blizzard nuked him from canon and hinted that the comic he appeared in is also non-canon.
- Several characters created by Richard A. Knaak were pretty disliked, most prominently Rhonin and Krasus for similar reasons as Med'an.
ZCE.
- Blizzard seemed to consider the draenei race to be either this or The Un-Favourite, to the point where it became somewhat of a meme for players to make sarcastic comments about the draenei being ignored.note Blizzard admitting that they failed at integrating the race into the game properly did not help matters. This changed with Warlords of Draenor and Legion, which gave the draenei plenty of screentime as the bulk of the Alliance-aligned forces in the past Draenor and Argus, as well as fleshing them out by showing their civilization on Draenor at its prime, rather than its pitiful remains in Outland in TBC.
Remove this, the Scrappy is a fan reaction, NOT whether Blizzard likes the race/faction or not or has a habit of ignoring characters they set up.
- Budd Neddreck, and Harrison Jones for turning entire zones or storylines into just one long pop culture reference.
ZCE but Jones could potentially keep given how many players criticized the Uldum Zone for degenerating into a slew of Nazi and Fascist jokes based on Downfall and Inglorious Bastards rather than exploring more interesting plotlines such as Al'Akir and the Tol'vir(through there has been a reexamination of Uldum in some circles of the fanbase, with people arguing that "maybe the zone wasn't too much of a giant meme"). Not sure about Budd Neddreck.
- Most of Mists of Pandaria's cast received this. Some specific examples listed below.
- Ji and Aysa, for being boring characters with no real connections to their factions as well as being a clichéd set of Star-Crossed Lovers. They were even Put on a Bus in one novel. However, time has been kind to them with many players wanted them to have story relevance again.
- Aside from Nazgrim, most of the Horde questing NPCs in Pandaria for either being unsympathic, inconsistently written, playing humor too far, and not lending anything to the Horde story. Not having any orcs aside from three characters oppose the now evil Garrosh is agreed to have really hurt the Horde identity.
ZCE as well.
- Astalor Bloodsworn, at first considered a mostly harmless NPC in The Burning Crusade, became this in Warlords of Draenor for his utterly callous treatment of his former apprentice Kaelynara Sunchaser and what she did afterwards because of it. It's got to the point that some people want to find a way to kill him. The Tear-Stained Letter
he sent her is considered a major Tear Jerker and Astalor himself is by and large now seen as a complete Jerkass and a disgrace to the Horde.
I think this one keeps, through it may be possible that this character was meant to be a Hate Sink.
- The tortollans are largely hated for having tedious world quests and fairly annoying voices ("A turtle made it to the water!").
Another ZCE, not too much elaboration apart from "making a big meme".
- Like Thrall, Malfurion Stormrage used to be a popular character. However, his return in Cataclysm turned many players against him. He's wrestled the Night Elf leadership away from his wife Tyrande, turning her into little more than arm candy in the process. Despite this, he doesn't actually seem to care about the Night Elves, as he ignores the Horde's blatant incursions into their land and razing of Ashenvale Forest. While this is allegedly because he needs the Horde's help in Mount Hyjal, it makes him seem uncaring and hypocritical to Alliance players. When Tyrande took more aggressive measures, he didn't act to either support her or calm her down. Malfurion has pretty much become the defining example of how neutrality can ruin a character in the fanbase.
From what I can tell, he seems to keep. It should also be noted that his ungrateful response to Illidan's final message dosen't help things.
Now these three I think is a bit early to discuss with the expansion just having wrapped up:
- As mentioned in Replacement Scrappy, the Baine of Tides of War and Battle for Azeroth is considered to be an unsympathetic traitor who is only ever a liability to the Horde, especially the tauren. Basically, the writers constantly used Baine as a mouthpiece to defend every bit of Alliance aggression at the tauren's expense so much that it eventually killed all of the tauren leader's credibility.
- Nathanos Blightcaller, the rude, smug human dark ranger in charge of Horde operations on Zandalar and Kul Tiras. Horde players hate him for having to endure his snark throughout questing and raiding, while Alliance players hate him for his inexplicable ability to survive, and even fight on roughly even terms, with Alliance characters far stronger than himself, such as Tyrande and Malfurion at the same time.
- Sylvanas in Battle for Azeroth, while still beloved by many, has had her hatedom become much stronger, due to committing bigger war crimes than ever before, having her personality be flanderized into a Card-Carrying Villain that rants about "killing hope", and her motives being unclear to the point that she sometimes comes across as just not having any.
- In Shadowlands, some consider her victory in the duel against the Lich King!Bolvar as a new low, with many detractors talking about her character becoming heavily OP and unopposed in the slightest by anything due to her apparent status as Creator's Pet, while in the past she wouldn't stand her ground against Arthas; with only in-lore explanation being her being empowered by the funnel of souls going into the Maw under Jailer's jurisdiction, who became her benefactor sometime before the War of the Thorns.
- While they have their defenders, the mechagnomes of Mechagon have generally been despised ever since they were first revealed, mainly for their somewhat Uncanny Valley appearances and being a subrace of a historically unpopular race, but also for not being the fully mechanical mechagnomes from Northrend and being released as the Alliance counterpart to vulpera, a commonly-requested race that broke the trend of allied races being subraces. Where vulpera became the most popular allied race across both factions shortly after release, mechagnomes ended up on the opposite end of the spectrum and became one of the overall least popular races along with Kul Tirans, who were also eclipsed by their Horde counterpart.
BFA is the current arc, didn't we have a rule to wait on characters whose arcs aren't over yet for a few months? Now as for the characters themselves, I can see Nathanos qualifying and Baine qualifying given the reactions of the fanbase and what I know of it and the reactions(let's just say that Blizzard writing is never really good on a good day as Blizzard is very much gameplay over storytelling oriented—but this expansion is generally perceived as having the worst lore and the worst writing outside arguably Jaina's arc in part due to the very black and white handling of the faction war).
As for Sylvanas, no go. Blizzard is intent on making her a Hate Sink and she's very likely gonna be upvoted as a CM when the time comes barring a Xehanort style sudden redeeming quality, but I can see given how she could be seen as a scrappy given how people complain about her being overpowered or poorly written that she ends up here down the line as well.
However here's why I wouldn't consider her a scrappy. She still has A LOT of defenders. Many MANY people who view her arc as a instance of bad writing also do so from a position of "Sylvanas is being poorly written to becoming an irredeemable villain, and I like her and think she should be more of a antihero/antivillain instead." and they object to that. The Forsaken/Sylvanas fanatic route for BFA was supposed to end with the players defecting to Saurfang's side, but people complained and Blizzard added a route where you can remain a blind loyalist to the bitter end. If a character being presented as pure evil could force such a backlash that Blizzard had to change the plot to a degree, I don't think she'd be a scrappy.
Also many people also expressed opposition to Sylvanas being presented as pure evil on the basis that they were told this wasn't gonna happen and it happened exactly the way they feared it would be. I've heard of instances where there have been people that would usually hate her actions or expected this outcome choose the fanatic path and side with her out of spite for the mess of the writing in this expansion. I don't think because while her hatedom has grown, her fandom has also grown more vocal, along with people choosing to root for her to critique Blizzard's bad writing.
Mechagnomes have been out for just a few weeks, so too early to tell.
So now, my rewrites for Fandal and Garrosh:
- Of all the leaders in Vanilla, Fandral Staghelm received the most hate. While Blizzard wanted us to sympathize with him as a tragic character that could not move past his son's death, many players came out viewing him as a xenophobic jerkass due to his arrogant nature, looking down on non-night elves, replacing then-fan favorite Malfurion Stormrage as the Night Elven archdruid, and effectively causing the whole Ahn'Qiraj storyline simply because he couldn't move past his son's death. This was probably why he was portrayed as a villain in Stormrage, where he was revealed to have been working with Xavius to keep Malfurion imprisoned in the Emerald Dream, and Cataclysm, where he was portrayed as having gone over to Ragnaros' side in the aftermath of the Shattering.
- Initially Garrosh Hellscream was hated by players during Wrath of the Lich King for being a reckless warmonger sabotaging Thrall's attempts to make peace with The Alliance; while Blizzard had plans for Garrosh to mature into a wiser leader, many players had a far more negative reception of the character. Blizzard tried to redeem the character in the eyes of fans in Cataclysm by having him be disgusted at Magatha poisoning his axe during his Mak'gora with Cairne along with Sylvanas' use of the Plague, and executing an Orcish general for bombing civilians in Stonetalon Peak. While some fans were won over, the majority of fans continued to hate him, remembering him solely as Cairne's killer. As a result, Blizzard scrapped his planned Character Development and set him up as an antagonist for Mists and Warlords. Over time, however the hate for Garrosh has died down due to the growing perception that Garrosh's actions, at least in Cataclysm, were a justifiable reaction to the moves of the Night Elves against the Horde, along with the perception that he tried his best to overcome the responsibilities Thrall left him when he was appointed as Warchief, and growing fatigue at Blizzard doing another Faction War Storyline painting the Horde as villainous and prone to rebellion in Battle For Azeroth. As a result, the character has been much more warmly received in hindsight, with the meme "Garrosh did nothing wrong" being popular among the fanbase.

Those instances are, again, specific jokes that didn't land with some people. Calling them "mechanics" is not correct.
