I don't think Ruby and Sapphire are quite Love at First Sight, or if they did then the show actually went through its way of actually deconstructing it? One of the reasons for their (temporary) unfusing after ASPR is that they thought their whole relationship was based on shaky foundation, and realised that when apart from each other, even after thinking they solely did this for RQ/PD, that there really was something special in that relationship, hence the whole plot point with the wedding
Two weeks later, but we have a full, official video source on the previous New York Comic-Con panel.
I'll recap everything they said, though a lot was stated previously:
- Unlike in the show, they started writing the story and songs as the same time.
- Sarah Stiles' agent pitched Spinel's character to her as "Psychotic Betty Boop", which Rebecca Sugar describes as a very truncated version of the character bio she put out.
- "Happily Ever After" and "Found" had all the singers record together.
- Blue and Yellow Diamond don't have Spinels, but Sugar likes to think their closest equivalents have gems shaped like a club and a spade.
- Sugar only realized that she based Spinel on the same anecdote that inspired "Everything Stays" partway into production.
- Steven adding a jacket to his outfit was based on Zach Callison wearing a bunch of different jackets on-set.
- Part of Spinel's animation is duplicating the in-your-face aspect of early animation, back when "a bat flying at the audience" could be quite a spectacle.
- Rebecca Sugar did the key frames for those times were Spinel's eyes went all crazy
- The title of "system/BOOT.pearl_final(3).Info" is meant to be like a real sound file. The file extension references the Amiga's use of .info files
(the show's composers often use chiptune). The (3) is of course referencing how you automatically iterate on files using existing names, in this case repeatedly making "final" versions of a song.
- The statements that "there is no season six" and that Future is "an epilogue limited series" both came from Sugar first.
Fusion represents the relationship between the two characters. Sometimes that relationship is romantic, as with Rainbow Quartz 1.0, Garnet, and Stevonnie. Sometimes that relationship is familial, as with Steg, Rainbow Quartz 2.0, Smoky Quartz 2.0, and Sunspot 2.0. Sometimes that relationship is just a very close friendship, as with Opal.
And sometimes the relationship is a little toxic, as with Sugilite and Sardonyx just being power fantasies for Amethyst and Pearl, respectively, at least until they confessed that to Garnet. Sometimes the relationship is SUPER toxic and traumatizing for both parties, as with Malachite.
I think fusion is treated as (paraphrasing J. R. R. Tolkien) applicability rather than allegory. When the show wants to discuss sexuality, they use fusion as a substitute for that. When they want to discuss familial bonds, fusion is a substitute for that instead. When it's just a battle tactic, then it's just that.
I mean... If it was really about sex then the last episodes of the original series and the movie take on a whole creepier implication.
I'm pretty sure most abandoned the "Fusion=Sex" after Sunstone, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, Rainbow Quartz II, and Steg, tho.
Prettiest Meta Knight Gijinka, nglHere's a list of questions to answer, or just semi-specific stuff I'd like to see before the end of Future (besides what's set up by the opening):
- What was in the booooox?
- What was Pearl's history before being assigned to Pink Diamond?
- What exactly did White Diamond know about Pink Diamond and Steven's lives on Earth, and how?
- Even if we never learn where White Diamond came from or why she decided to make the others gems, it would be nice to know what she knows.
- Doug and Priyanka learn about Stevonnie.
- How did Lion die, and how long ago?
- Related to the last point: Will Lars find out he's aging so slow?
- Are Lars and Sadie dating, broken up, or did they never end up getting together?
- Do Sadie, Buck, Jenny, and Sour Cream even live in Beach City (most of the time) anymore? The poster specifically said their band was "home in Beach City".
- Will Peridot ever fuse with another gem?
- What happened/will happen to the Zoo?
- Are they ever going to get the Cluster out of the Earth?
- Could Steven's telepathy help the smaller cluster gems like it helped the Cluster, or are they just going to stay bubbled indefinitely?
- There should probably be an episode or two about established Homeworld gems, like Topaz or Pink Pearl, that gives a general ideas of how their lives are now. Part of of it could explain how Nanefua got Ruby bodyguards or show what the real Rose Quartzes look and sound like.
- Likewise, an episode about the Off Colors or Nephrite that shows life in Little Homeworld.
- What happened to Pumpkin? Did she just die of old age during the timeskip or was she just in some obscure corner of Little Homeworld?
- Stuff I'd like to see just because: A second major appearance by Peedee, Andy, Kiki, or Mr. Smiley.
- Stuff that's not important, but I'd still like to know: Did Lars and the Off Colors get to keep the Sun Incinerator, or give it back to Emerald? Did Bismuth or Lapis ever realize one poofed the other? Is the damage to Pink Pearl's eye/face ever going to recover? Did Greg or Steven see anyone else from the DeMayo family, even offscreen? Is Amethyst a regular session drummer/backup singer for Sadie Killer and the Suspects? Besides managing someone else's band, did Greg every get around to make more music himself? What is the name of the town the Maheswarans live in?
If anyone remembers loose end I'd forgotten or has specific things they'd really like to see, feel free to chime in.
I just noticed that while Nephrite wasn't in the movie, she is in the Future opening, but with a new form. Her clothes are different and her arms became spiky.
Random weird thing I'm just recently noticing: "Winter Forecast" showed the Crystal Gems were trying to blow up the Galaxy Warp with the Shooting Star, but then we see it again in "Friend Ship" no more damaged than when Garnet broke the warp itself.

- How did Bismuth poof during the timeskip?
- Semi-related, but I wonder if we'll ever get an in-universe reason as to why some of the uncorrupted Gems look so different compared to "Change Your Mind". Some could be explained by them simply poofing and regenerating (like Nephrite and Biggs) but the rest...
- Were Army, Doc, and Leggy ever rescued?
- What did Rose's Smoky and Sunstone look like?
- Who are Rhodonite's and Fluorite's components? What are they like?

It was obvious when we first learned about it, because clearly Amethyst and Pearl putting aside their differences to form Opal to save Stephen is just "sexual tension" the episode and not anything else.
The show didn't explicitly imply it was all intimate stuffs until Pearl and Garnet did the fusion.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.

x3 While Fluorite's components were not confirmed, Rhodonite is made of Ruby and Pearl.

The first few lines of the song "Isn't It Love" are not questions ("I'm suddenly hot, I'm suddenly cool, I'm suddenly a genius, I'm suddenly a fool"), but that is still Ruby and Sapphire talking.
Related to "Isn't It Love", someone pointed out that Garnet's lecture to Jamie in "Love Letters" that Love at First Sight doesn't exist becomes a bit of a Broken Aesop with Ruby and Sapphire falling in love after less than a day following their rejuvenation.
