I just looked at the posts on this forum from 6 years ago, and it was pretty hilarious.
- People were upset that the character designs were different from the pilot, and predicted that the show will fall to obscurity because of its poor animation.
- Some people predicted that Pearl and Greg will get together. If they only knew...
- Someone suggested that Cookie Cat's backstory was reflecting Steven's mother's backstory, coming from outer space and leaving his family behind. They were absolutely right.
I remember when I first saw commercials for this show. Based on what I saw I thought that it would be about a group of female superheroes, sort of Sailor Moon style, that had been chosen to protect Earth by a series of gems that gave them powers ala how a Green Lantern ring chooses its wearer. I thought Steven was an anomaly as a guy when gems were typically given to girls and he'd have to cope with being the only guy on an all-female team.
That may have been more Early-Installment Weirdness than anything. After all, the original draft of the show had the gems being outright magical women from a parallel dimension who were genuine guardians of humanity.
Maybe that was the really early draft, but Garnet being a fusion was planned as early as the pilot, and Rose Quartz being Pink Diamond was planned from the very first episode. A lot of this show's worldbuilding, lore, and big twists have been planned since the beginning.

Yep, that's true, but not EVERYTHING is planned from the beginning. Hell, not even Gravity Falls twist of the Author was 100% executed as originally planned. Sure, they planned a lot of things but not every single one of them. And the first season's first half was chock full of Early-Installment Weirdness.
It's reasonable to assume that the twists that came out in the first season (Garnet being a fusion, aliens) were planned from the writing of the earlier episodes of the season.
In particular, Couch Steven was halfway through the season, long enough that they had to know the bits of it that obscure Garnet (and the calling fusion "magic") would do so while writing.

Hmm, I don't remember the episode Couch Steven, a 2nd episode about his transforming body?
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice."Couch" - "Coach"
That's the thing I was focusing on.
Fusion being a last resort wasn't really the focus of that episode, Pearl only mentioned how Garnet and Amethyst's personalities mix and become the bad thing.
That whole fusion is a dire straights thing was in "Giant Woman"
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. It's so weird to look back at the show with everything that's happened. We knew squat back then! I'm surprised and glad one thing's never changed, though:
The fandom always makes batshit insane that are either totally right or totally wrong, and there is no inbetween.
Speaking of, here's a goofy theory
that I like a lot. Would make for a great crack fic too
Its okay. I just thought your guess was too wild to be worth entertaining it.
Also im still puzzled why pink pearl was nowhere to be seen in the movie or the new show intro. I think unlike with jasper a small cameo wouldnt have clashed anything they want to do with her in the future. Because i doubt they want to do something with her that could have been part of some of these wizard of oz theories that existed in the time between white diamonds reveal and change your mind.
"I'm wondering about the giant hermaphrodite that will form when Steven fuses with one of his aunts.
" - someone predicting Smoky Quartz (and Sunstone and Rainbow 2.0) early 2014.

"Sooooooo, is it possible Garnet is actually two gems?
"
Old comments are really hilarious. :D

One estimate
pieced together the voice actors' posts about their recording session to concluded there were at least sixteen sessions done after the ones for the movie. He guesses there are probably a few more nobody posted anything about, and that Future will be similar length to a regular season.
