I completely forgot Pearl just snaps a little Centipeetle's neck in Gem Glow. The Centipeetle fight scenes in general are surprisingly violent.
Also, I just realized we never got official versions of Garnet's and Amethyst's themes. I really want a soundtrack for the background music.

Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢Rewatch, Day 26
- "Now it'll be safe forever, hanging in this perfectly stable magic tree." I wonder if the trees or grass actually grow. (Steven's Thunder Bird TV shirt is consistently visible on the tree every time since.)
- Steven presumably assumed Bismuth was corrupted.
- Bismuth talking in the mane when Steven can't even inhale or exhale is so bizarre.
- Bismuth talks about "new recuits" in Amethyst and Steven's presence, even when she thought the latter was human. So I guess humans did help the Crystal Gems somewhat normally during the rebellion.
- "I have her gem, the rest is from my dad." Don't think that's completely accurate. Even the organic part of Steven's body has some resemblance to Rose and Pink.
- We now know for sure Bismuth didn't learn about the corruption. The other Crystal Gems had no reason to hide that from her (much less practically lie about it).
- Every time you see a scene in the Forge, remember that its enormous basement from Save the Light is canon.
- Heat does not hurt Bismuth, but it does discolor her hand
◊.
- "It's no big deal. I was working on them since before... Well, may as well give them to you now." If Bismuth hadn't gone for the secret conversation with Steven, how long could she have evaded questions about what happened to her?
- "I mean, she's one of the original Crystal Gems and no one ever mentioned her to me, not even Rose? Don't you think that's a little bit, uh... suspicious?" No one tells you shit anyway, Amethyst.
- There's multiple reactions shots of Steven showing him getting less enthusiastic for Bismuth's passion for violence.
- Amethyst learns the hard way that no one out-cheats Garnet.
- Burrito Amethyst
◊ is way weirder in motion than I remember. She very, very slowly swallowed the whole "burrito" (which is actually a pizza wrapped around a burrito).
- Completely forgot that Bismuth eats, cooks, and sleeps.
- "What? If that thing's got infinite power, then, of course Lonely Blade should use it. It just makes sense." Bismuth can't see a trap coming.
- Where was Rose's sword kept most of the time after Connie started using it? It's surprising Steven had it in Lion's mane after he told her she could take it home.
- "I can't believe this, that I'm the one giving the pep talk to Rose's... Rose's...?" "...Son." Is she unfamiliar enough with humans to not understand the concept of children, or just confused by a gem having one?
- Steven really should have considered running away.
Amethyst deep throats a Pizzurito...
It's the norm. And because she's not human, it didn't hurt.
Or it did and she liked it.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Rewatch, Day 27
- They're walking to the barn instead of using the warp pad. Maybe they wanted the exercise?
- "When I think fun, I think Lapis." Amethyst does not think highly of her.
- This episode features an extra scruffy Lapis.
- Peridot still finds pooping funny.
- Pearl or Garnet may not have known Jasper was from Earth's Beta Kindergarten, but they almost certainly knew of the location itself.
- The warp pad inside the Beta Kindergarten functioning raises some odd question. First, Garnet and Pearl never looked near it? Second, could Jasper have just teleported straight into Steven's house whenever she wanted?
- Why is Jasper's hole so huge? The best conditions result in a massively oversized hole?
- "This hole's been dug out. Recently." "Maybe it was a prairie dog?" Peridot doesn't even need to know what those are to know Steven's full of it.
- The first gem they run into looks identical to Orange Jasper monster/Biggs. Possibly a mistake, but they are basically clones.
- I'm disappointed they never did the special end background again after these two episodes—especially since it's just the next episode's title card.
- The monster got through the cell by fusing.
- Imagine if Steven just spit on Jasper immediately, and it worked.
- I really hope Brooks took a long break and a drink of water after recording Jasper's last lines.
- We never did see Peridot making a giant metal yoyo.
- The Ruby Squad never consider simplying boil the water away. Though Lapis may well have a lot more, depending on how deep the hole is.
- "When I found out this mission was to look for you, I nearly dissipated my form!" Potentially too much information.
- Pearl probably could have gone without the butt pat from Amethyst.
- "One of Pink Diamond's very own Quartz soldiers started a rebellion and took it too far." A sterling example of how people use that phrase even though it makes no sense at all.
- Amethyst, you always have to assume someone who leaves will come back for something a few minutes later.
- On that note, the Crystal Gems would have stranded themselves on the moon if Doc hadn't come out to offer Jasper a ride. Their only hope would be Lapis coming after them before Steven died of thirst.
- An airlock on the surface of the moon shooting people into deep space is, by far, the stupidest thing that has ever happened in this show.
- The other Rubies were reduced to .jpgs scattered to the solar wind
◊, and manage to look the same from multiple angles
◊. Jarringly cheap-looking, but funny enough.
- "When I heard rumors there might still be Crystal Gems on Earth, I couldn't believe it. A thousand years of fighting were all for nothing!" Incomplete genocide is total failure in Eyeball's book.
- "Her huge sword is what I remember." Eyeball probably could have been talked into thinking Connie was Rose Quartz.
- The way Steven keeps calling "Eyeball" by a nickname she doesn't like is somewhat rude.
- "Find cover, soldier!" Eyeball forgot who she was with for a minute.
- "Think I'm losing my luster." Even gems can get old for this shit.
- Episode-exclusive power: Steven hasn't stretched his bubble shield again.
- Steven should have just healed Eyeball and not let her know it was cracked.
- Rose's healing was a "rumor", so she may have been trying to keep it as secret as she could.
- "What would even happen to me?" The writers were clearly being coy, given they at one pointed planned for that to happen over two years before then.
- Trend between eight Rubies: adorable ditziness. Trend between two Rubies: horniness (maybe three if you include Doc wanting to sit on Jasper's lap).
Amethyst doesn't really need to think highly of Lapizuli, the comment just makes sense.
She's only been around her when bad things happen and she's all serious.
I'm not sure how Stephen could heal Ruby and she not understand what was happening.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Ok I saw that of finally confirming is bismuth who poof lapis and all....and saying she woudnt mind about it, I just me or it feel the narrative kinda move away from that? it looks like they dont want Lapis to be upset with the crystial gems for any reason.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"She has no reason to care at this point...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Lapis also blamed the Crystal Gems for her imprisonment because she didn't think saving the Earth justified a rebellion. Seeing Earth in a non-traumatic context convinced her their actions were defensible, even if she wasn't willing to join in yet.
With Bismuth in particular, I could see Lapis getting uncomfortable if she discovered that, but not consciously resentful.
The only magically-handwavey thing I can imagine is that there's a non-oxygenated atmosphere, but some kind of safety that keeps organic life from breathing it in so they're less likely to asphyxiate themselves (pure nitrogen is the most deadly gas).
(In the artbook, they mentioned the writing reasons was so Steven couldn't hide in this. Which is quite bizarre, because Lion could just make a portal away regardless.)
Rewatch, Day 28
- Sanic's so fast, you gotta wonder how Jasper even caught her.
- "Maybe it likes shiny things?"
◊ Or the shade.
- The rock appears to have landed on Peridot's gemstone.
◊ Or did her visor cover it?
- The most .gif
◊
- Peridot makes a hilarious Yoshi-esque noise as she spits out the marshmallow bag.
- The silent credits begin the song that last 29 months.
- Wonder if Steven and Amethyst will ever have more of an actual dance instead of just a hi-five.
- Sardonyx's room has a special door (tarp)
◊.
- Smoky Quartz, and by extension Amethyst, had no idea fusion could have their own rooms.
- The difference between Sardonyx's nose and Pearl's is the former sticks up, so she's sticking her nose up and looks like she's at a lower angle, and thus bigger.
- Bit odd that Smoky Quartz is physically weaker than Opal when Steven is could almost certainly outmuscle Pearl by this point. But their rank improved after a few tries, so maybe it's more a manner of technique.
- Since most of the shorts are made by a single storyboard artist (in these cases Colin Howard and Jeff Liu), they're a good way to see that specific artist's style.
Cooking with Lion
- It could be pretty annoying to cut even an avocado with a spoon.
- Someone really wanted to animate rolling sushi
◊.
- Lion seems greedy, but probably needed something to get the taste
◊ out of his mouth.
- That is quite an avocado texture.
◊
Gem Karaoke
- Gremlin Amethyst.
◊
- Pearl only has that tablet thing in this short. Is it made just for karaoke?
- "Haven't You Noticed (I'm Star)" has four different versions.
Steven Reacts
- "Geoff Lao" is a good not name.
- Magno-Hall is nearly unrecognizable as Pear.
Video Chat
- Connie playing Crusader Kings II is kind of funny considering the absurdly horrible things the game lets you do.
- I love the implication that Lapis thinks TV characters exist physically inside the television.
- Lion actually does have whiskers.
◊
- POV Break: We still see the videos even as Steven is running between computers.
- Connie's desktop is still visible even when her computer is disconnected.
Steven's Song Time
- This clearly takes place after "Bubbled", and maybe even "Mindful Education", but is vaguely worded, probably in case it ended up airing early.
That song must be from a movie soundtrack then and Stephen decided to get all 4 versions...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. If any of y'all happen to live in LA, you might have a chance to see the movie early
.
As you might expect from a free event, it sold out ridiculously quickly.
Even if I lived close enough, I don't think I'd go. Not a big fan of watching things in crowded theaters. Though maybe I'd be up for a big-screen rewatch.
Rewatch, Day 29
- Lion just walks off, so the kids may well be walking home. Which I guess is one reason Steven doesn't ride Lion around more.
- "Last time I relied on the internet for info, I ended up writing a very, uh... erroneous paper." Well, you better avoid the encyclopedias, because those are also super inaccurate.
- The temple sketch
◊ looks like concept art, though I'm not sure if it is (based on any).
- Did Garnet see Buddy in the strawberry battlefield with Future Vision, or were she and Pearl just there by accident?
- "Well, travel not here, traveler, as this place is very dangerous." Does Pearl sincerely think these gems sites are all dangerous (if only because she thinks humans are stupid), or is she just lying to preserve gem heritage sites?
- Ironically, Amethyst doesn't call the Kindergarten dangerous, but it may have been unhealthy for Buddy to even be there for a long time.
- I like to think Buddy flailing like a baby
◊ was literally part of his diary.
- Lion's desert is in the Sahara. Unless land development went very differently than in real life, the entire population Lion came from would have gone extinct over fifty years ago. How much this affected him probably depends a lot on how much he could relate to them after apparently gaining sapience.
- This seems like another episode where they thought of a plot hook to introduce (in this case, the palanquin) and went from there. I like when they do that.
- Fusion participants can conceal their thoughts/memories, but here we see one accidentally sharing them.
- We also see fusion can be used to share memories. But judging by Connie's confusion at Bismuth's appearance, it's not instantaneous and may specifically require the meditating to create a Mental World.
- Garnet explains Stevonnie's wild hallucinations as something that can happen to any fusion ("An imbalance can cause your fusion to lose touch with reality, see things that aren't there.") Presumably, we just don't see other fusions doing that because few of them have Steven.
- Steven and Connie are clearly literally sharing thoughts and memories, but can they also see Ruby and Sapphire's? If so, does that mean gems/fusions can do a mind meld via meditation even without fusing?
- Ruby gets so hung up on immediate issues, it distracts her from the huge numbers of long-term issues. But stressing over those things doesn't really help, so it's sort of a plus.
- Hori's Steven has a rather distinct mouth and chin
◊.
- Now Connie does change into her sparing outfit at the house.
- Despite Garnet's explanation, Steven has one minor hallucination
◊ while not fused at all.
- Holo-Pearl has a nice idle animation.
- Connie says Steven should fuse to slow their decent, but Steven could to that unfused, and fusing seems like it would make things more complicated. Does she still not know about Steven's floating power?
- I really like the nice long pause on the ground before Stevonnie comes into frame.
These rewatches have got me into rewatching the series as well. Hopping around without any real direction so far, but I've to to say...
More seriously, but a lot more random, a tiny something I love looking back about Garnet and Sapphire's) designs is how - like a lot of little things in this series - the way you can't see their eyes seems one way at first but is actually kind of the opposite.
At first, it seems like the visor and Sapphire's hair are supposed to accentuate how stoic they are and exaggerate how their expressions are blank (like how Raven's cloak is used in Teen Titans 2003, for instance). But as it becomes clearer how Garnet is stoic but far from reserved from her emotions, they instead become a means of visually hiding their expression to let us guess at them rather than showing they don't have any - and it's used to greater and greater effect as the series goes on.
Nearly every time we see Garnet's eyes (outside the first couple times) and every time we see Sapphire's eye, they're vibrant and full of emotion - so they're both clearly very expressive under there. In "A Single Pale Rose" and "Pool Hopping," especially, blocking their eyes instead comes off more as visually contrasting the way they look and the way they feel, and it's kind of brilliant.

I think that scene got a Meaningful Echo in Change Your Mind, where the only difference (besides setting) was that Steven stuck the landing
