Rewatch, Day 17, Part 2

    Historical Friction
  • Dewey's play was way off Pearl's account, but what of non-Pearl historical records? If the real William Dewey just left out how the Crystal Gems' helped him, it'd be kind of weird for the play to portray him so sympathetically. At least Buddy's journal mentioned them.
  • Did the Crystals Gems really meet William and Buddy in the middle of the ocean?
  • Jamie's Pearl channels a little Paul Lynde.
  • Reverse "one less voice": Ronaldo's VA is in the credits just for a bit of walla.

    Friend Ship
  • POV Break: We see Peridot before Steven warps in. (Jones-Quartey admitted this specific scene is the kind of "cheat" they're OK with.)
  • Amethyst swings a big chunk of rock and gets a little Urien—"Destroy!"
  • I think the writers realize they need one prolonged confrontation between the Crystal Gems and Peridot where the latter goes full supervillain and runs away.
  • Why does a spaceship have any of these traps?
  • There being a screen showing the bottom of the pit is quite a contrivance for Steven to be able to see and hear them.
  • Amethyst and Steven look up at the screen showing Garnet and Pearl, showing how high-angled shots make everyone's heads look enormous.
  • "Lumpy, clumpy" are two insults I don't think Peridot uses again.

    Nightmare Hospital
  • So is Lion how Connie usually gets to Steven's house?
  • Priyanka gets called back into the office literally within five minutes of getting home. Being on call can be incredibly annoying.
  • Why and how did Priyanka take the sword into the hospital, instead of just leaving it in her car? Hospitals don't usually let people bring in knives, much less enormous sword.
  • That first doctor is Dee Bradley-Baker's only time voicing a character with comprehensible dialogue.
  • "You didn't find an ID?" They were most likely completely naked.
  • Steven never going to a hospital is kind of questionable. He lived with Greg when he was younger; shouldn't he have brought him there for a checkup at some point?
  • Usually the show doesn't credit "Featured Voices" that weren't in this specific episode, but they did this time.

Steven never going to a hospital is kind of questionable. He lived with Greg when he was younger; shouldn't he have brought him there for a checkup at some point?

It's possible Greg took him to a smaller doctor's office, instead of a big ol' hospital trip.

Steven was also unable to tell by looking that Priyanka was trying to use a stethoscope to find a pulse.

Rewatch, Day 18

    Sadie's Song
  • "One less voice": Lars says nothing as he walks by Steven. Lars actually has no lines whatsoever this entire season, and I still don't know why—was Moy not available or did they not want to give him only minor roles?
  • I cannot unseen Sadie's pant pockets as eyeballs.
  • Throw that box! It will help, somehow.
  • Sadie says nobody knows she could sing. Given how practiced she sounds, that would be pretty hard to hide even from her mom.
  • If Barb didn't butt in, I wonder if Sadie would have actually performed on her own terms (but not called out her mom), or if Steven by himself might have taken over anyway.
  • Kind of weird that Sadie lives in the basement of a two-person house. Is it really narrow and vertical, or does Sadie prefer her room there even with another bedroom?
  • I now realize Sadie lives in her mother's basement, while Lars lives in his parents' attic.
  • Steven connects with Barb possibly faster than anyone else. Unfortunately, their bonding happens to be very uncomfortable for a third party.
  • Barb and Steven have a pretty similar dynamic to Carol and K.O. in OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes—you can see how Kate Flannery ended up cast in both.
  • It's just been pointed out to me that the star painted on Sadie's face covers her scar.
  • Sadie "Never even went to the prom." I'm still confused if that means she graduated high school or not. Does "prom" always refer to a senior dance? (Either way, I never went to mine either.)
  • Mr. Smiley advises Sadie to smile without getting called on it slightly before that line became incredibly cliche to even invoke sarcastically.
  • Beach City have their own swim team: the Beach City Seals. If that's for a school or youth group, who knows.

    Catch and Release
  • To really get Steven's spit to repair the warp, he'd have to project empathy onto it. Bust out the Crying Breakfast Friend stickers?
  • Think this is the first time we hear "(Oh) my stars!"
  • Still no clear meaning for what "You're going to harvest me?" means.
  • I'm just now remembering the small cluster gems weren't referred to by that name; Peridot called them "fusion experiments". Steven hadn't heard the phrase "cluster" since "Jail Break", and forgot it completely.
  • Peridot just walked out of the burning room into the beach house. Apparently, anyone (or at least any gem) can open the doors from the inside.
  • Peridot calls a bathroom "Roomy. With a fresh hint of Earth citrus." I'll let that line sink in on its own.
  • POV Break: We see Peridot do some completely silent things on the opposite side of the door as Steven.
  • Curious what would have happened to the inside of the temple, where Peridot was bubbled, if Earth was destroyed. Would the temple take the dimension inside with it, or just seal it off?

    When It Rains
  • Subverted POV Break: Steven seems absent, but he was actually expelling just offscreen.
  • Peridot had never seen rain, but she did know what was water was and that Lapis Lazulis control it.
  • Peridot assumes Steven is a regular gem, just some kind of quartz she's never seen before. Presumably Homeworld gems that didn't think Steven was Rose/Pink—like Lapis and the Off Colors—thought similarly. Must be strange to be from a species so incredibly, physically diverse.
  • Seems kind of uncharacteristic for Peridot to dismiss Stevens' explanation of being hybrid, not just for time, but out of disinterest. It also raises the question if she ever found out the real story.
  • "Millions of shards." is one of the few numbers we get indicating the scale of gems involved in the rebellion. It also makes very little sense because there should be a similar number of corrupted gems, which the temple doesn't come close to having.
  • Steven mentions "my dad" to Peridot again, but she parses it as two words ("If it looks really bad, then we can just ask this 'Dad' for help, right?").

    Back to the Barn
  • Peridot insists Steven's hand puppet is inaccurate, but does she really know what the Cluster looks like?
  • Tearing apart appliances, Peridot truly becomes a gremlin.
  • "That will be all." (clap clap)
  • Saying you won't take "Orders from the likes of you." is not the best choice of words, especially with how likely Peridot is to assume she means "from a Peridot" (rather than "from some asshole").
  • "What are these robots?" I think "robot" is the only word Homeworld gems have shown ignorance of despite having such a close equivalent term.
  • That rock to Pearl's face looks dangerously close to a gem-blow.
  • I still don't understand why Garnet starts eating the popcorn then stops.
  • I misremembered an extra joke where the tree had somehow gotten several points offscreen.
  • Amethyst finally has someone she'll cheer Pearl on against.
  • Pearl gets swirly eyes again.
  • "If pearls are really like you say they are"; that's very thoughtful of Steven to phrase that as a theoretical.
  • Peridot calls Pearl a knowledgeable "technician", and I'm not sure if that's because that's a lesser compliment than calling her an "engineer", or just conflating the terms (though Pearl and Peridot are engineers and technicians).

Not strictly a Steven Universe thing, but I've realized you could use Custom Wikiwords to cut out the tedious potholing or overlong names for recap pages—for instance Recap/StevenUniverseS1E1GemGlow would just be displayed as "Gem Glow" (quote includes) while still linking to the article.

My only problem is that it seems so different, the mods who approve custom titles might reject it as improper formatting.

"Millions of shards." is one of the few numbers we get indicating the scale of gems involved in the rebellion. It also makes very little sense because there should be a similar number of corrupted gems, which the temple doesn't come close to having.

I think it all depends on how many Gems fought in the war, how many were actually shattered, and how many shards they broke into. You could easily get a dozen shards from a lone Amethyst, tops.

Rewatch, Day 19

    Too Far
  • "Alright, I chased away those cows." How much of the land around the barn did Andy own?
  • "What does 'tungsten' look like?" It's gray (unless it's green).
  • Peridot names body parts by function, but apparently could not tell us what's a butfore.
  • "Keep [Peridot] in line, Amethyst." What would she do now that would be out of line in this situation?
  • "The newer ones have a nicer finish." A surprising bit of aesthetic from Peridot. Hearty's injector in the trailer does look a little brighter, though there's a chance it's not newer.
  • Peridot calling Steven an "abomination" throws the scene off, considering the rest of what she said about Steven was just embarrassing ("It's funny that you poop.")
  • No one but Amethyst gets the sex joke, not even the one making it. (And Amethyst is right that it's much funnier that way.)
  • "Check out this... hmm... (picks up a hammer) rhythmatic pulverizer!" Peridot totally made up all those words. God, that's barely better than Matt McMuscles calling helicopters "gully-gullies".
  • Swirly-eye Steven.
  • Sensual knees on abdomen. Peridot would've been offput by basically any kind of contact, wouldn't she?

    The Answer
  • "A team of diplomatic Gems were sent from Homeworld to investigate." This, along with how Sugar consistently describes Blue's Court as being "diplomats", still puzzles me.
  • Would Garnet have mentioned gem castes if Peridot hadn't already? They keep Homeworld culture on a need-to-know basis. After thinking over the way Homeworld's treatment of Steven affected his self-esteem at this age, I'm starting to think they were right.
  • "What a beautiful place to build a colony. I wish I could have seen more of this planet." Sapphire seems quietly unhappy with Homeworld's general mission from the beginning.
  • The gem that says "This is unheard of!" was clearly the basis for the yellow Jade's design.
  • "How dare you fuse with a member of my court?" Does Ruby not count as a member of her court?
  • Ruby and Sapphire agree: more eyes feels better.
  • One of the first things they see on Earth is animals eating other animals.
  • I love Yi's delivery for "And now you're here forever." It almost breaks the song, but in a hilariously pathetic way.
  • Steven was really fishing for that answer.

    Steven's Birthday
  • Greg drove to the barn this time. Maybe he also did those other times where Connie came into Steven's house.
  • Yet more eavesdropping. There are probably a bunch of other times Greg and Connie had "human beings" talks we never heard.
  • Curious that Steven's shapeshifting changes his voice but no other gems'.
  • It's quite absurd that anyone believed Steven had a growth spurt at that exact time. At best they could have assumed Steven realized he could control his own age without any side effects.
  • "It's funny that I have to look up at you now though." Don't get used to it—or even look forward to it.
  • Another big-headed high angle.

    It Could've Been Great
  • I'll point out we got the title "Back to the Moon" like nine months before they actually went to the moon the first time here.
  • "I guess it was naps" I like to think Lion was already fully willing to make the trip, Steven's pestering just got him to go then instead of finishing his nap.
  • Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl start to fall off Lion mid-warp. God, imagine where they'd end up if they had?
  • Again, the smallest gems go in Lion's mane.
  • Lion collapses from exhaustion getting to the moon, but needs to do the whole thing again like ten minutes later. Unless they just waited in the base for hours between episodes.
  • "It's Blue Diamond." Trust me, even though I'm making her look green.
  • "We are literally walking in the footsteps of the diamonds!" "They must really like stairs."; "That chair is only for the most elite Gems!" "Well, they aren't here now... right?" The hints that Steven is a diamond are almost on-the-nose.
  • Peridot takes the seat, showing her constant struggle: to kiss ass or feel important.
  • They repeatedly said the Cluster was in the Earth's core, but now they say it's in the mantle.
  • "All told, this probably only accounts for maybe five percent of what was originally planned." With how ridiculously uninhabitable 100% is, even 5% seems like nothing any multicellular life could survive.
  • I was trying to think of Garnet ever did anything really bad. Her almost beating Peridot (possibly really hard) over some insults is the worst I could think of.
